We've Got It Covered #112

After a wee bit of a break from posting cover versions, I have decided to revive my weekly We've Got It Covered posts. Seeing as it's been a while since I posted anything I have decided to go with not one, but two covers from Admiral Fallow. The five piece are currently winging their way around the good old US of A at the moment, then they will culminate a pretty amazing year for the band with a headline show at the Glasgow Barrowlands on Saturday the 8th of December.

We've Got It Covered #111

Man I am getting pretty shoddy when it comes to posting these weekly cover versions, I might have missed posting something up last weekend but I reckon I have a pretty good excuse in that I spent most of the weekend meeting up with folk to do some plotting. There are plans afoot for a wee bloggers project involving myself, my old partner in crime Jim Aye Tunes and the relatively new kid on the block, Neil from Scottish Fiction to join forces to put on a regular gig night in Glasgow. At the moment we're still very much at the planning stage, but hopefully if all goes according to plan we should be putting on our first gig together at the end of October. I'll let you know a bit more about that once things have been formalised and we've actually got some bands booked.
I also had the pleasure of meeting up with Adam from Randolph's Leap last Saturday, again to do some more plotting. I might have mentioned before that they've got an EP coming out on Fence in the few months and that they're currently working on their debut album proper. So I think it's safe to say that there's more than enough going on to keep things ticking over, but if you're Adam though. The talented wee bugger has been continuing to write new material, which he's been recording in flat in Partick. Much as in the same that his last offering 'Randolph's Leap and The Curse of The Haunted Headphones' came about, he's been sending me a few songs which we'd initially thought might turn into an EP, but seeing as he can't stop coming up with new material, the EP has now been expanded and is now going to be released as a mini-album through Peenko Records at some point in the next few months. We're not 100% as to when that might be, but again I'll let you know more about that once things have been agreed. I have listened to the mini album to death and I really can't wait to be able to share with you guys n gals. That being said, at the moment I am enjoying having it all to myself.
On a completely different note, apparently the Internet has decided that wear currently seeing the death of the music blog. Or at least that's the bandwagon that everyone seems to be jumping on at the moment, then again if there's a bandwagon to be jumped on your average blogger will be right there. When I first started this site I did find myself following the trends being set by the likes of your Pitchforks and your Stereogums, however, I made a bit of conscious effort to move away from following the hipster crowd and do my own thing, which was to look at was going on in my backyard. That's not to say that I haven't been guilty of getting caught up in the hype that the Scottish music scene is sometimes guilty of. Then again I guess that's the problem with music blogs, the need to be at the forefront of discovering new and exciting bands means that we barley have time to digest a bands music before we're off looking for something sparkly and new. Upon reflection I guess that is one of the reason why I decided to take a break from blogging as much as I did. That constant need to find something new just wore me down, I just wanted to spend more time going back and properly listening to music that I knew I already liked, instead of sifting through stuff that I didn't.
Which I guess brings me back to my original point about the death of the music blog, I can't see blogs dying out in the short run. There are always going to be people like me who are passionate about music and want to shout about what they love on the Internet. Hopefully what we're going to see is a move away from this fast paced culture of everyone following the same trends, posting the same shit about the same bands and basically copying what everyone else does. When I first started reading music blogs it was because they offered something different to what I was being offered by the mainstream press. That however seems to have gone full circle, with loads of bloggers just talking about the same over hyped artists.
I know that the Scottish blogosphere has been guilty of over Scottish hyping bands, more recently there's been a bit of backlash from some disgruntled folk that the word 'amazing' gets used far too often. Which I guess is a fair criticism if you take it in the context of comparing Scottish bands against everything else that is going on in the world. I have thought a lot about this as it really pisses me off when folk start taking snide wee jabs at folk who are just talking about stuff that they love. If a blogger says that they think that something is amazing then I reckon you should take their word for it, if you don't agree then what are you doing wasting your time reading their site. I think that folk need to put things into context, the majority of the time when I am talking about how good I think a Scottish band is I will be looking at them in comparison to what is going on in my own scene. I am not taking them an comparing them with the likes of your Arcade Fire's of this world. Music blogs at this level should very much be seen as a first foot on the ladder, if the band is good enough then you will tend to find that more sites will talk about you. I guess the problem that we have nowadays is that everyone ends up talking about the same thing, which is quite frankly boring. The rise of the blog came about as folk were looking for something new and exciting, now that things have become so saturated with everyone regurgitating the same shit, I am of the opinion that the loss of some sites might not be a bad thing.

Sorry, I didn't mean to go off on such a ramble there. Nic and Erin are away out which means I had peace and quiet to rant on the web. On a lighter note, I have been pretty amused by this spoof blog which mashes up old interviews from various Scottish music blogs and sites. You might not find it funny, but it amused me somewhat.

Anyway, back to the point of this post which is really about sharing a cover version with you all. This weeks cover versions come from Emma Pollock and Beerjacket. I decided to go with these two tracks as they are both going to be playing at the Old Hairdressers in Glasgow this coming Wednesday (29th August) at an event called 'What’s so funny ‘bout Peaceniks, Love & Understanding?'. The night which is being put on by Rodge Glass (author/Burnt Island) is in aid of the Alliance for Middle East Peace, featuring an array of talent which includes the aforementioned Beerjacket and Emma Pollock, plus appearances from the likes of Rick Redbeard, Alasdair Gray, Alan Bissett, Ewan Morrison, Paul M Carlin, Kirstin Innes, Allan Wilson and Peenko favourite, Adam Stafford. It promises to be one hell of a night, plus it's also doubling as Rodge's leaving night as he's heading for ventures new. It's only £5 to get in and you'd be doing your bit for charity, so essentially it's a win win situation. You can find out more information on the gig by clicking on the poster for it below.

Right I am now going to get myself ready to head out as I am heading through to Edinburgh for the day with some friends to drink myself stupid and hopefully go and see Kid Canaveral. Although that will depend on a) if I can persuade my friends that this is a good idea and b) whether I can still stand by then. For now though here are two cracking covers from two cracking artists, enjoy!

We've Got It Covered #110

Yes, I know that this post is a day late, but you'll have to forgive me as I have been away all weekend so this is the first real opportunity that I have had to draft something up. I have to admit that I am feeling decidedly rough, so there is a big risk that I might get a bit ramble-y, but hey that's nothing new.
Hangover aside the one that is frustrating the fuck out of me this weekend is that we are currently having some problems with receiving emails to our Olive Grove accounts. I don't know about you, but nothing frustrates me more than computers and my inability to fix things. The fear of not having full web access really does bring me out in a cold sweat, I guess I have to hold my hands up and admit that I am addicted to the Internet. That constant need to keep up with what's going on in the world really isn't healthy, but still I find that from the first in the morning to last thing at night I am messing about on my phone checking Twitter/Facebook/Emails and so on. More often than not, I find that having a few days away from the Internet is good for my overall state of mind, but still I find myself being sucked back in. It's become such an integral part of my life, that I really don't know how I'd live without it.
What does that have to do with anything you might be wondering, well as I said before I am in a rambling mood this evening. So I guess if you're looking for me to somehow justify myself you're not going to be in luck. Instead I'll spare you from my rambling pish and get on with this weeks cover version, which comes from the much tipped Discopolis and their take on We Were Promised Jetpacks, 'Human Error'. If you like this then you should check out their free download Summer Mixtape, which features four tracks, which includes two new tunes. All that they ask in return is your email address, which is a pretty pretty good deal.

We've Got It Covered #109

It's been a funny old week. In case you missed the memo on Wednesday there I announced that I was going to be taking a wee step back form posting every day and that I'd decided to bring a few new faces in to help out/freshen up the place a wee bit. I was genuinely a wee bit taken aback by the reaction that the post got, I think I might have caused a wee bit of confusion  as a lot of folk seem to have read it as I was giving up. I can assure you that is not the case, I have just decided to take a wee break from my Fresh Meat and Friday Freebies posts. The Fresh Meat posts will defo return at some point in the future and my partner in crime, Jim from Aye Tunes has decided to take on the mantle of writing Friday Freebies for his site. With just a couple of days notice he managed to come up with a whole heap of cracking free downloads which you can find here. I have full confidence that Jim will do it justice, so if you are a fan of free stuff check out Aye Tunes every and he'll sort you out. I would also like to point out that it was purely coincidence that myself and The Pop Cop announced that we were going to be going off and doing different things on the same day. If you haven't heard he's passed the reins over to a new girl, if her first post is anything to go by then I think it's safe to say that his site in safe hands.

Now I am going to attempt to shoe horn some music news into this post, as it seems that Edinburgh is very much the place to be this weekend. If you are out and about in the capital today then you'd be wise to get youself down to the Dissection Room at Summerhall for this years Scottish Independent Label Fair. The event has stalls from some of Scotland's finest independent record labels, including Chemikal Underground, Rock Action Records, Song By Toad Records, Gerry Loves Records and a whole load more. Sadly there won't be any Olive Grove Records representation at the event (I am on a stag do today and Halina's moving house). As well as having an array of great music on sale, there will also be live music and DJ sets from the likes of FOUND, Seafieldroad, Withered Hand and Adam Stafford.
Then on Sunday those nice boys from Born To Be Wide are putting on an event at the Electric Circus which will feature ten-minute taster sets by artists playing in the city during the month, including Kid Canaveral (acoustic) Fatherson, Fat Goth, Homework, Paul Gilbody, Siobhan Wilson, Plum and TeenCanteen. Further information on the event can be found on their website.

If you are going to be in Edinburgh next weekend then you might also be interested in a two day convention that is being putting on at the Carlton Hotel which aims to act as training event for bands, musicians, managers and solo artists who are interested in learning more about the art of live performance. I was planning on talking a bit more about this, but sadly I have run out time. Got get myself dressed so I can go Go-Karting. If you want to find out more just follow this link.

We've Got It Covered #108

You might have noticed that I have been a bit slack with my posts recently, that's two weeks in a row that I haven't had a chance to knock up a Friday Freebies post. Last week I have a pretty good excuse, in that I was living it up on the Isle of Eigg at Fence Records Away Game Festival. This weeks excuse was that I am still recovering from last weekends debauchery, that and I was out on Wednesday night as Randolph's Leap were headlining Tut's. I have also spent the past week trying to catch up with Olive Grove stuff, which is all about to kick off on a grand scale pretty damn soon. For that reason I have been thinking about how much time I have to commit to this site, alas a few changes are in the pipeline. There are plans afoot to make a few changes to freshen things up a bit, I will let you all know a bit more about what I have planned at some point next week (hopefully tomorrow if I get the chance). For now though here's a wee cover of Withered Hand's No Cigarettes from three of Fence Records finest. get it downloaded then get off your computer and start enjoying your Saturday evening.

We've Got It Covered #107

I am getting a bit slack with these We've Got It Covered posts, what with being away at T in the Park last weekend I didn't have time to write one up in advance. Now I find myself spending a Saturday evening cobbling together something half way legible, before I post this weeks cover version. That's not to say that I haven't been busy today, aside from being on fatherly duties, I also spent the afternoon recording a podcast over the phone with my friend Jamie for the next episode of Net Sounds Unsigned. As much fun as it is rambling on the Internet, sometimes it can feel like I am just shouting out in the void, so having a bit of banter with Jamie was a lot of fun. Plus I do love being able to inflict my music choices on other people, once the show is up on his site I'll be sure to post up a link.
One other thing I found myself doing this afternoon was sticking up some last minute posters for the show that I am putting on this Wednesday at the Captain's Rest. Apparently it's now just called the Captain's, but that just seemed daft to me, so I am sticking with the Rest part. Anyway, in case you'd somehow forgotten, Mitchell Museum will be making a triumphant return after their wee hiatus period. This is going to be the bands first headline show in Glasgow since they went on their break back in August of last year. As if that wasn't enough I also have the fabulous Jo Schornikow from The Shivers joining us for the evening. Any of you that were at the The Shivers gig that I put on in Mono last year should already be fully aware of what an amazing live performer she is. Then if you chuck in New York based artist Scott Rudd into the mix, it makes for a massive cocktail of fun. If you are planning on coming along and you're on that there Facebook, do me favour and click that you're going on the events page that I set up, as it will really help to set my mind at ease. I know I say this every time I put on a gig, but I'll say it again - IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE SOME OF YOUR BEAUTIFUL LITTLE FACES. See now I am shouting, does that make me sound desperate. Right I think I best stop there, this Breaking Bad boxset isn't going to watch itself. Anyway, here's a wee cover that Mitchell Museum did of MIA's Paper Planes, enjoy...

We've Got It Covered #106

This may or may not work, but I am going to give it a bash. This will be the first blog post that I will ever have written on a train. So if this goes tits up you'll know why. As per usual I left this to the last minute, hence the rushed nature of the post. I'm currently heading through to Edinburgh with Randolph's Leap for their show with Kid Canaveral at the Wee Red Bar.
So for that reason, here's the Leap and their cover of Ivor Cutler's 'Everybody Got'.

We've Got It Covered #105

I don't know about you, but this last week has been pretty damn knackering. On Monday night I was out seeing King Creosote, The Pictish Trail and Randolph's Leap at the the Old Fruitmarket, then the following night I was out at the innaugural SAY Awards. Out on two school nights on the bounce has left me pretty damn exhausted, as trying to fit all of this music malarkey into real life ain't all that easy. So I feel as if I have been chasing my tail all week, thankfully though we have a pretty chilled out weekend planned so as to recuperate. If the weather brightens up a bit then we'll hopefully be heading over to The Hidden Lane Festival for a bit, then tomorrow the plan is to stick some of these awesome posters around Glasgow. Hopefully after that I'll be able to pop along to Oran Mor for the West End Festival Closing Party. If you haven't already seen the line up, it's pretty much a fantasy line up of great Scottish artists. If you don't believe me then check this out for a line up

We've Got It Covered #104

Apologies for the lack of a cover version post last week, as I am sure you're all aware, last week I was up in Inverness at the goNorth Festival. So I had to take a few days off to recuperate at my folks as they stay up in that neck of the woods. Having had the whole of last week off, it was a bit of a culture shock having to come back to face real life and an over flowing inbox full of emails. Plus on Thursday there we had the State Broadcasters single release at the Captain's Rest, which seemed to go pretty well. What with Jo Mango having to pull out at the last minute, I did fear the worst. But in the end we managed to rope in the legendary Duglas T Stewart from the BMX Bandits in Jo's place at the eleventh hour. So in the end it all turned out pretty damn well I think, although I could have done without all of the stress. Then again I guess that's all part and parcel of putting on gigs, talking of which I am going to be putting on another show next month at my spiritual gig home, the Captain's Rest. This time round I have roped in Mitchell Museum, to play their first headline show since they ended their hiatus. Plus as if that wasn't enough I've also got Jo Schornikow from The Shivers and a fella by the name of Scott Rudd (from NYC) playing too. They're both going to be over in our neck of the woods in July touring the UK, so I am pretty chuffed that I am getting to put on their Glasgow date.

Talking of Glasgow dates, I'll try to stop rambling and get to the point of this post, which is of course to share with you all this weeks cover version, which comes from Human Don’t Be Angry, the most recent guise for Malcolm Middleton. If you haven't already got your hands on his eponymous album, then I'd urge you to hunt it down, as it's fucking ace. Anyway, tonight he's back in Glasgow headlining King Tut's with support from Peenko favourite, Martin John Henry. It should be a corking evening of entertainment, me I'll be at the in-laws feeling sorry for myself that I am not at Tut's. Anyway, here's Human Don't Be Angry's cover of The Beach Boys classic Pet Sounds to get you all in the mood.

We've Got It Covered #103

Morning folks, it's Saturday and once again I'm hungover. No surprise there then I guess, I spent last night in the company of some fine individuals at King Tut's catching The Grand Gestures and Behold The Old Bear, A top night was had, but boy am I paying for it today. If I think that I feel bad now, god only knows how sorry I will be feeling for myself on Friday. As next week I will be heading up to Inverness for my third goNorth,  Scotland's biggest music industry event/piss up. For the second year running, myself, Song, By Toad and The Pop Cop are putting on a showcase gig at the event. So if you're going to be Inverness on Thursday it would be great to see some of your pretty little faces. Anyway, here's a selection of cover versions from the some of the bands that I am looking forward to seeing in Inverness next week...

French Wives-Blue Boy (Orange Juice cover)

Chris Devotion & The Expectations-I Aint Got No Home (Woody Guthrie cover)

Where We Lay Our Heads - New Dawn (Withered Hand cover)

Washington Irving - Boy From School (Hot Chip cover)

The Machine Room - Bizarre Love Triangle (New Order cover)

The Machine Room - Small Town Boy (Bronski Beat Cover)

We've Got It Covered #102

Bloody hell, what with all this nice weather we're having I damn there nearly forgot to post up this weeks cover version. I guess that being woken up 5:30am by an overly excited child might have something to do with that, as great as this weather is, it really is a pain in the tits for us as my daughter wants to play at an hour which I last saw back in my clubbing days. Although it sounds like I am moaning I must admit that I have had a pretty cracking day chilling out in the park, then meeting up with the latest addition to the Olive Grove family, the State Broadcasters. This evening has been especially ace as we had our first barbecue of the the year which was sound tracked by a Welsh band called the School, that I was recently introduced to by a friend from Japan. Yep, that's me getting introduced to a band from Wales by a man who lives on the other side of the world - don't you just love the Internet! Anyway, the reason I am going with this cover version is that the School sound isn't a million miles away from our very own Camera Obscura. For that reason alone I thought it would be a good excuse to post Camera Obscura's cover of the Sheena Easton song 'Modern Girl'. Fuck me, that was a hell of a lot of rambling, sorry.

We've Got It Covered #101

This week I have decided to plump for three Scottish artists that you can catch at today's Stag & Dagger Festival which is taking place across various venues in Glasgow. Showcasing a wealth of local talent alongside an array of touring acts, it looks like it could be a cracking day out. Personally I am not going as I'd already arranged to meet friends to watch the Champions League Final, but hey if you are going make sure you check out Miaoux Miaoux and Adam Stafford, they're both braw!

We've Got It Covered #100

As seems to be the case with most things this week, I am running a little behind with my blog posts, but trust me this weeks cover version post is worth the wait. To celebrate the fact that this is my 100th 'We've Got It Covered' post, I thought it might be fun to ask one of my favourite artists to record something to mark this milestone. Last years, 'Songs To Swim To' album from Monoganon was undoubtedly once of the finest things to come out in 2011, I liked it that much that I even bought a record player purely so I could listen to the album on vinyl. I have been banging on to anyone who will listen to me about just how much I like this album. If you haven't heard it, you can download it for free from the nice folk at Winning Sperm Party.
So seeing as I was such a big fan of the album, I cheekily asked Monoganons', frontman John B McKenna if he might be up for recording a cover for me and I am pretty chuffed to say that he agreed. Rather than just record the one cover though, he took up the challenge and ran with it, recording three covers in all. I am saving one back for now to share with you all later in the year, but for now I can share with you Monoganon's cover of The Stooges 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' and Daniel Johnston's 'Walking The Cow', enjoy!

We've Got It Covered #99

As seems to be the way of things nowadays, I once again find myself speedily trying to draft up this weeks cover version post. More often than not, I find that during the week that I know exactly what it is that I want to talk about. However, no matter how much I pre-plan what I am going to say, when it comes to actually writing a post it's a totally different ball game. It's pretty tricky trying to cobble something together with the distractions that a one and a half year old brings. Not that I complaining, more a case of making excuses for the rambling nature of these posts. In my head I had planned to talk a wee bit about yesterdays sad loss of Adam Yaunch, although I could never claim to have been the biggest Beastie Boys fan. However, I did catch them a couple of times and they were always good fun. But as news of his passing started to filter out last night I couldn't help but feel quite sad about it all. I know it's a bit of a cliche to say, but it really is sad that we have to wait until someone is gone before we can celebrate what they've brought to the world. I guess I just find it depressing that we'll soon see loads of folk heading and buying Beastie Boys albums, I realise that folk are looking for ways to show their grief, but is buying a CD really the way to do it. For a man who was so supportive of the Free Tibet movement, it'd be nice to think that there were a few folk out that might opt to make a donation to something that I am sure Adam would have been happier to see folk go out and make a donation to them instead.

Anyway, that's enough of my ramblings, on with this weeks cover version which comes from Rod Jones & The Birthday Suit. The Idlewild songwriter and guitarist, is playing a solo acoustic show at bar bloc on Tuesday coming (8th May), alongside This Silent Forest and Ryan McDowell as part of a free show for the latest Slow Club night. To get you in the mood here's a cover that he did a while back of Snap's 'Rhythm is a Dancer', that was recorded for a Vic Galloway session...

Welcome to the first ever international Peenko blog post! Now I'm not too sure whether this will work or not, but if it does, then this will be the first time that I've written a post using my phone. It's a complete recipe for disaster and a real likelihood that there my grammar will be even worse than normal. As some of you will already be aware, I'm 'sunning' it up in Barcelona this weekend, in what is me and Mrs Peenko's first holiday sans baby. Much as we miss our wee girl, I have to admit that it's done the pair of us the world of good to chill out and more importantly catch up on some much needed sleep. You've got no idea how amazing it is to have had proper lie on!

As for this weeks covers, they come from Kid Canaveral and the Pictish Trail. Who coincidentally enough are playing together at the CCA this coming Thursday. Provided I don't end up blowing all of my money on mojitos tonight I should hopefully be heading along to. Talking of cocktails I think it's about time that I had my first of the day...

We've Got It Covered #97

Unlike my fellow blogger, The Pop Cop, I am stupidly excited about today. Not since about 1997 when I queued to get tickets to see Blur at the Barrowlands, has there been an event that I have been happy to haul myself out of bed at an ungodly hour to get down and in line. But this morning I will be leaving the house just after half seven to go an stand outside my favourite record store, Love Music to pick up some of the exclusive 'goodies' which are being released as part of this years Record Store Day celebrations.
Having always been a bit of kleptomaniac when it comes to buying tangible music products, I have to admit that I only just recently caught the vinyl bug. So this morning I will queuing up with all of my fellow vinyl junkies in order to get my grubby little paws on copies of the Admiral Fallow, Snowgoose and Human Don't Be Angry albums on vinyl, the limited edition Bronto Skylift tape and possibly a few limited edition 7"s. Anyway, that's enough about me and my wish lists, if you're passionate about your music then get out and support your local record store today. Should you need anymore convincing then here's a list of some in store gigs that are taking place in Edinburgh and Glasgow today, interspersed with a few cover versions from some of the bands that will be playing live.

Edinburgh

Avalanche Records

2:00pm Withered Hand
3:00pm Gordon McIntyre (Ballboy)
In the evening there is also going to be an after show of sorts at the Electric Circus featuring Star Wheel Press, The Last Battle (who I stupdily said yesterday that they'd be doing an instore, that's what I get for not paying attention) and the fabulous Ms Emily Scott. The gig is being put on by my fellow blogger friend Stuart from Tidal Wave of Indifference. The stage times should go something like this 7.20-7.40pm - The Last Battle, 8.15-8.45pm - Emily Scott and 9.10-10.00pm - Star Wheel Press

Withered Hand - Into the Fold (eagleowl cover)

Ballboy - Tell Me (Galaxie 500 cover)

VoxBox Music

This gig/instore is being compered by my friend Ian from Song, By Toad and those pesky Gerry Loves boys, hence the awesomeness of it all.

3:00pm PAWS

We've Got It Covered #96

I am sure that most of you are already aware that the inaugural longlist for the Scottish Album of the Year Award was announced this week and I think it's safe to say that the list took quite a few people by surprise. To be honest with you I don't really know what I was expecting, but from the 20 albums that made the long list there are a few that I was genuinely surprise to see on there and a whole lot more that I had plain old never heard of. I guess it's the eclectic nature of the list that makes it seem genuinely interesting. In case you've not already seen the list, it looks something like this:

6th Borough Project - "One Night In the Borough"
Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - "Everything's Getting Older"
Bwani Junction - "Fully Cocked"
Chris Stout's Brazilian Theory - "Live In Concert"
Conquering Animal Sound - "Kammerspiel"
FOUND - "factorycraft"
Fudge Fingas - "Now About How"
Happy Particles - "Under Sleeping Waves"
Jonny - "Jonny"
King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - "Diamond Mine"
Mogwai - "Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will"
Mungo's Hi Fi - "Forward Ever"
Muscles Of Joy - "Muscles Of Joy"
Remember Remember - "The Quickening"
Richard Craig - "Inward"
Rustie - "Glass Swords"
Steve Mason & Dennis Bovell - "Ghosts Outside"
Tommy Smith - "Karma"     Twin Atlantic - "Free"
We Were Promised Jetpacks - "In The Pit Of the Stomach"

As with all of these kind of awards it's inevitable that folk will gripe about what did and didn't make the final list. But having seen first hand how much hard work Stewart Henderson (Chemikal Underground/The SMIA and the driving force behind the awards) has put in behind the scenes in trying to encompass all of the various factions of the Scottish music scene, I reckon he's done a cracking job in pulling all of this together.
If you compare the final 20 choices with the top 20 albums chosen in last years BAMS Award, there are four albums in there that were in the BAMS top twenty: "Everything's Getting Older" , "Diamond Mine", "Kammerspiel"  and "In The Pit Of the Stomach". Which I guess only goes to prove that the Scottish blogosphere has a pretty different viewpoint compared to the rest of Scotland's taste makers. Personally I would have loved to have seen Adam Stafford and Monoganon in the list, but I guess they might still edge towards being a bit too obscure for some folk (still fucking great albums mind). Personally I would love to see either King Creosote & John Hopkins or Happy Particles win it. Hopefully well see both of them making the final list of ten, which will be revealed  on the 17th of May, if you want vote for your favourite album then you can do so on the 14th of May when the voting goes open the general public, with the  general public’s   choice  guaranteed a slot on the shortlist. The winning  album  will be announced on the 19th of June at a ceremony in Glasgow, with the winner receiving a cheque for a whopping £20,000 and the nine runners-up receiving £1,000. Not bad, not bad at all.

Right I best rush off, as I am heading through to Fife with Randolph's Leap for The Eye O' The Dug Festival (that's my excuse for the rushed nature of this post). Before I go here are some covers from some of the artists that I wouldn't mind winning the innaugural SAY Award.

Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells - Cruel Summer (Bananarama cover)

Conquering Animal Sound - Dancing On My Own (Robyn cover)

FOUND - Eyes So Bright (Cate Le Bon cover)

Happy Particles - Lovestoned (Justin Timberlake cover)

King Creosote and Jon Hopkins - I Have Been Losing You (A-ha cover)

Remember Remember - Twin Peaks theme tune (Angelo Badalamenti cover)

Steve Mason - Borderline (Madonna cover)

We Were Promised Jetpacks - Blindsided (Bon Iver cover)

We've Got It Covered #95

This is going to be a bit of a rushed post as I am trying to draft something at half time during the football, yeah, I know I should have done this earlier, but you try writing a post whilst also playing with a 19 month year old.
Undoubtedly the biggest story of the week in terms of the Scottish music scene was the announcement of the inaugural Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Awards. Over the years there have been a number of these kind of awards that have tried and inevitably fail due to a lack of credibility, but thanks to a lot of hard work behind the scenes from Stewart Henderson (Chemikal Underground/The Delgados), the brain child behind the awards, Scotland looks set to finally have its own answer to the Mercury Music Prize. Rather than ramble on at length about the wards, I'd suggest you check out two cracking articles which explain the ins and outs of it all over on The Pop Cop and a feature in the Herald from the fabulous Ms Nicola Meighan. Right I have a title party to be enjoying so I'll sign off with a cover by one of my all time favourite Scottish bands, The Delgados and their cover of The Dead Kennedys classic California Uber Alles...

This week saw Scottish DIY label, Overlook Records announce details of their 1st Birthday gig. Taking place at The Captain's Rest on Saturday the 2nd of June, they've lined up a hefty bill which features every member of the Overlook family, so that'll be Trapped in Kansas, The Darien Venture, Salò, So Many Animal Calls, Bellow Below and Vasa Crusades. Tickets for the gig are just £5, with seven bands on the bill you can't really argue about getting value for your money. With almost half of the tickets already sold, you'd be wise to get yours nice and early if you fancy going to this one. To get you in the mood here's Trapped Kansas cover of the Calvin Harris song 'I'm Not Alone'.

We've Got It Covered #93

I am far too hungover to function as a normal human being today, so I am going to keep this post nice and short and cut straight to the cover version which comes from Peterheads finest sons IndianRedLopez and their take on Twin Shadow's Castles In The Snow. You can catch the boys on tour this week as they're out on the road with Song of Return, on Thursday (29th) they're at the Tunnels in Aberdeen, Friday (30th) they hit up the Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh and then they finish up at the ABC2 in Glasgow on the Saturday night (31st), tickets for all of these shows are available here. I am away back to the lie on the sofa and feel sorry for myself...
