Conquering Animal Sound - On Floating Bodies

Album Review: Conquering Animal Sound - On Floating Bodies

James Scott and Anneke Kampman are now on album number two under the guise of Conquering Animal Sound. After debut album Kammerspiel was released on Leeds-based Gizeh Records, the mighty Chemikal Underground took notice and snapped up the Glasgow-based duo for their second album, due on 18th March. James Scott may be familiar to some outwith CAS, having released under the name The Japanese War Effort, while Anneke has released material under the moniker ANAKANAK.

On Floating Bodies opens with the brilliantly named 'Ultimate Heat Death of the Universe'. There's a strong beat over lots of background chatter. The feeling is one of receiving a warm aural embrace as the sound washes over you. The beat leads into a really nice vocal, which at times seems at odds with the beat and tempo, but which is exactly what makes the track interesting. It's a warm and comforting opening which waxes and wanes throughout. Pretty much the opposite of the ultimate heat death of the universe I'd say, which sounds a tad more painful.  'The Future Does Not Require' has a bit more space. The vocal comes in earlier over the sparse soundscape. The beat builds up underneath the vocal and while the music is excellent and very complimentary of the vocal, it's the vocal that shines. It's effortlessly beautiful and a real joy to listen to.

'Warn Me' kicks in with a fuzzy, bass heavy intro. There's some really good percussion in the background. The track builds in intensity to the chorus, then drops off on the verses. It never gets crazy though. It's subtle, built on the beat that underpins the song. One of the better aspects for me is the production on the vocals. It works really well here, with some nice sampled vocals to accompany the main vocal. The vocal dominates on 'No Dream', while soft, gentle sounds wash over the track punctuated by a double beat. There are little bleeps and blips sparking all over the track, which on the whole has a dreamlike quality. Again, the sampled vocal acting as a backing vocal works really well.

'I'll Be Your Favourite' washes over you from the outset. Long notes pass over you like sonic waves. Little electronic sparkles join in just before the Anneke's vocal comes in. Bar the beeps and bloops, the tempo is fairly sedate. A few minutes in the beat kicks in, lifting the tempo slightly. The electronic wizardry really shines on this song, adding real depth and texture to the song. A subtle bass note underpins it all and true to the name, this is most definitely an early favourite. 'Gloss' opens with a drawn out sigh, repeated, over a stuttering beat. The main vocal comes in over both, while there's some tape hiss, hints of percussion and drawn out electronic flourishes. There's a myriad of electronic trickery in this track, keeping it really interesting and adding lots of depth and character. Mr Scott is something of a magician at this kind of thing.

There's a steady beat and barely heard sound akin to a hum at the beginning of 'A Noise Remains'. Add in some tape hiss and a vocal and it's a good head-nodding start. There's even a sound that resembles a typewriter or a keyboard, yet it slots right in and feels natural. There are lots of sampled vocals in there, lower in the mix than the main vocal which give the song more character. In short, another favourite that keeps my foot tapping away for the duration. 'Ipse' is a soothing song. Lots of electronic activity with a varied vocal create a nice leisurely pace. The soundscape is quite rich in texture and very chilled. These two certainly know how to craft songs that are both compelling and which also reveal more with each listen, such is the complexity of the music at times.

There's almost no pause and it's into 'Mimese'. Another more relaxed affair, the music  rises and falls, with some really nice vocal work. It creates quite a diverse soundscape and the better moments come when Anneke's vocal is doubled up through samples. James provides excellent accompaniment to these moments though. I don't want to be appearing to play favourites after all. 'Treehouse' opens with a sound like a computer about to go insane. A beat pounds ominously alongside the vocal. There's a lot of different sounds thrown into the mix. A guitar like riff and the electronic equivalent of a steel drum being two my mind may have made up. Regardless of what my untrained ear picked up at times, they all coalesce into another complex and compelling composition.

'Inner/Outer/Other' marks the end of the album. To mirror my own disappointment, the beat is a bit mournful and a touch depressed, especially with a drawn out sound that feels like a cry or a moan of pain. In contrast the vocal is light and hopeful and gradually overcomes the darker aspects of the song. The contrast works really well as the more uplifting vocal fights to dispell that moan of despair. It's all over too quickly in an electronic screach though. I had high hopes when I put this album on, being a fan of The Japanese War Effort and if anything I enjoyed this even more than I thought possible. Generally speaking I'm not a massive fan of electronic music, but James Scott manages to do some incredibly creative things with his gadgets that strike a chord with me. Under the guise of Conquering Animal Sound you get Anneke Kampman too and her vocals are beautiful and measured, never settling into one particular vocal stlye and together they have made a really great and hugely creative album. Most impressive.

You can check out opening track 'Ultimate Heat Death of the Universe' below.

We've Got It Covered #101

This week I have decided to plump for three Scottish artists that you can catch at today's Stag & Dagger Festival which is taking place across various venues in Glasgow. Showcasing a wealth of local talent alongside an array of touring acts, it looks like it could be a cracking day out. Personally I am not going as I'd already arranged to meet friends to watch the Champions League Final, but hey if you are going make sure you check out Miaoux Miaoux and Adam Stafford, they're both braw!

The Phantom Band - Fujiyama (Moondog cover)

Conquering Animal Sound-Dancing On My Own (Robyn cover)

Adam Stafford - Walking For Two Hours (The Twilight Sad cover)

Friday Freebies

The Twilight Sad
Kilsyth's finest sons are all set to release their much anticipated third album (proper), No One Can Ever Know, next month. Having heard the album I reckon it's going to take a lot of folk by surprise with the new direction they've taken. As a wee teaser of what to expect, you can download Another Bed from it for free via both the Skinny and Spin.

Aloha Tigers!
My good friend Ian, who used to run the blog Have Fun At Dinner has set up his very own wee record label, Kircudbright Tape Club, and his first release is going to be with a band he's been championing for some time now, Bloomington-based dream-pop outfit, Aloa Tigers! Their debut album is due out later this year, but as a wee teaser of what to expect they've made their single, The Kind of Girl U Like, free to download on SoundCloud.

Mike Nisbet
Thanks to his placing in last years BAMS award, a lot of folk seem to now be taking notice of Oban's singer songwriter, Mike Nisbet. If you haven't already checked him out out, then now's your chance as he's made his song, Not Long, free to download here. It comes highly recommended kids.

The Last Battle
Around this time last year, Edinburgh folksters The Last Battle recorded recorded a New Years song called '365 days', and they're now very kindly giving it away as a free download on their Bandcamp. Look out for the follow up to their excellent debut album, Heart of the Land, Soul of the Sea, later in the year.

Hey Marseilles
It's been a while since I mentioned anything about Seattle septet Hey Marseilles, a band that I first heard after my friend Luke, aka I Build Collapsible Mountains, played them on an episode of the Glasgow Podcart. I'd actually forgotten how much I liked this lot, so it came as a nice surprise to find out that the influential radio station, KEXP are giving away a free download of their song “Elegy” here. 2012 looks set to be a big year for this lot, look out for a follow up to their debut self release, To Travels & Trunks later in the year, just cross those fingers that they make it over to these shores.

Monoganon
Those who frequent these parts on a regular basis might recall that I was raving about Monoganon's last album, Songs To Swim To, so much so that I had it was my second favourite album of 2011. So you can imagine my excitement in finding out that John B McKenna & Co have just released a new mini album called Help through those nice folk at Winning Sperm Party. Although not as immediate as their last release, this might not be for everyone, but I promise you that if you stick with it, it improves with every listen.

Trapped in Kansas
Those lovely Trapped in Kansas boys have very kindly decided that it might be a nice to give away all of the music that they record prior to the release of their last EP 'How To Go'. Just head on over to their label, Overlook Records where you can find a link to a whole load of goodies.

The Give It Ups
There are a few different record labels that continue to impress me with the music that they put out, one label that continues to impress are London DIY label, Odd Box Records. Their most recent release comes from twee indie four piece, The Give It Ups, and their single 'Let's Be Frank / If Everything Ends' which is fucking ace and free to download here.

Conquering Animal Sound
Having spent much of last year touring round Europe, Conquering Animal Sound have decided that it would be a nice idea to give something back to everyone who came out to see them. As a wee treat they're giving away a free live EP, featuring a couple of album tracks and some works in progress. Download it for nowt here.

No Island
Do you love your hardcore! No seriously, do you love your hardcore? If you do, then Glasgow hardcore punks No Island might well end up being your new favourite band. Their self-titled debut EP is free to download on their Bandcamp page and I can't help but think that these guys would be fucking awesome love. I guess I'll have to find out for myself some time soon.

Niki And The Dove
Earlier this week it was announced that Niki And The Dove came 5th in this years BBC's Sound of 2012 new music list, if you fancy finding out what this fuss is about this Swedish electronic duo then you can download their song 'The Fox'  for free right now by clicking on 'Free Download' under their Facebook profile photo.

As In Bear
For quite a while now, my partner in crime Halina from Glasgow Podcart has been banging on about an Ayrshire outfit by the name of As In Bear. It wasn't until they got voted in as one of the Best New Bands in the recent Ayetunes Readers' Poll that I finally took note (my bad). If you fancy finding out what all the fuss is about then head on over to their SoundCloud page where you will find a whole host of free tunes.

Matt Norris & the Moon
Having just supported Primal Scream at their Hogmanay show, Edinburgh outfit Matt Norris & the Moon are unsurprisingly on a bit of a high, so much so that they've posted up an improved version of  their song First Light of Day for free download on their SoundCloud page.

Fat Janitor
I still don't know too much about this noisy lot, the only thing that I can now tell you for certain is that they've posted up a mini album called Lurk for free. If you feel like giving your ears a healthy battering then getting downloading here.

Hipster Death Squad
The best named band in the world with the tunes to back it up are back, yup those prolific young fellas have crafted yet another corking wee tunes. It's called Good Times Again, which you can download for free on their Bandcamp page.

Seafieldroad
I would argue that the solo project from Andrew Eaton-Lewis from the band Swimmer One, is one of the most under rated Scottish acts out there at the moment. You don't have to take my word for it though, if you head over to their Bandcamp where you can find two new songs which are available on a pay what you want basis. Even if you don't fancy shelling out any pennies for them, I'd urge you to get them downloaded.

The Martial Arts
Glasgow indie power pop outfit, The Martial Arts are giving away their new album Your Sinclair for nowt over here.

coma emilio
Last, but certainly not least we have one man project 'coma emilio' who's been busy working away on new material. Fans of lo-fi experimental music should find themselves right at home with his new album, Not Songs Not Sung Not Sad, which you can download for free here.

The Scottish BAMS Award 2011 (The Scottish Blogger And Music Sites Award)

Three years ago I decided that it might be fun to run a poll amongst my fellow bloggers and folk who run music sites in Scotland, to try and find out what the definitive album of that year really was. In its inaugural year The Phantom Band pipped Animal Collective to claim top spot, then last year I did it all again with The National topping that list. This year I managed to rope in a whopping 47 folk to take part in choosing their albums of the year. The following sites all contributed their favourite albums of 2011: The Pop Cop, Jim Gellatly, The Steinberg Principle, Blueback Hotrod, Scots Whay Hae, Dauphin, The Daily Dose, Blues Bunny, Rave Child, Glasgow PodcArt, 17 Seconds, Net Sounds, The Tidal Wave of Indifference, edRock.net, Dear Scotland, Vic Galloway, Manic Pop Thrills, Edinburgh Man, Kowalskiy, Last Years Girl, Aye Tunes, Song, By Toad, Elba Sessions, Listen Before You Buy, Detour Scotland, Jock Rock, Found in Sound, Phuturelabs, The Daily Growl, Favourite Son, The 'Spill, Scottish Fiction, Nicola Meighan, Jenny Soep, Rokbun, Curious Joe, Radar Scotsman Music Blog and of course Peenko.

Initially it didn't look like there was any sort of clear leader, then as the votes started to trickle in our eventual winner(s) absolutely ran away with it. So without further ado here's The Scottish BAMS top ten albums of 2011...

And the winner is...

Ahead of tonights show at the Arches in Glasgow, I caught up with Bill and Aidan to present them with their very own BAMS Buckie!

a couple of BAMS

Congratulations Bill and Aidan, you are this years' winners of the Scottish BAMS award, how do you feel? Does this rate as a career highlight then?

Aidan - I think it might be the first award I've ever been presented with, with the exception of the joint 4th Year English Prize at Falkirk High in 1989, so it's very exciting indeed. Not sure about a career highlight – that accolade is always reserved for the work itself, and Everything's Getting Older is certainly one of my favourites, yes.

Bill - Feels good - though when it dawned on me, obviously quite some time ago, that awards are only ever decided upon by other people, not by some almighty, all knowing, arbiter of taste and quality looking down from the clouds, I thought it always best to never get too excited about any of them coming my way, not that there's been much occasion to, right enough.

How did you end up collaborating together in the first place?

Aidan - Bill says we found ourselves at the same table in a pub and I immediately asked him to play on some Arab Strap songs. I have no recollection of this at all, but at the time I was very much in love with his Also In White album so I've no reason to doubt him. After he played on the Monday At The Hug And Pint album, we did one song together and then took years to book a studio to do some more. We always seemed to have other things to do, but I'm glad we waited because I can't imagine the album any other way. It would've had an entirely different theme and tone if we'd finished it in 2005, and I really don't think it would have been as good from my side.

Bill - Indeed this is what happened - I was very surprised and flattered actually because although I was a huge Arab Strap fan, and though we were all from Falkirk, or, more likely, because, it never occurred to me that we'd ever all be in a studio together, so it did, for me at least, even at the time, feel like quite an occasion, and looking back, even more so now.

I am guessing that you've spent a lot of time in each others' pockets this year; has this bonded your love for each other, or are you sick of the sight of each other?

Aidan - We haven't really spent that much time together at all, to be honest. We haven't done a lot of touring, although what we did do was quite hard work. There's more gigs being planned for next year, so hopefully we'll have more to do, but it's not as though we're a young rock band out on the road and in the NME every week, there's not a lot of fuss or constant attention to deal with; there's been a minimum of upheaval, thankfully.

Bill - Yeh, sorry, you're guessing wrong.

If the love is still there, are there any plans to work together again in the future?

Aidan - We've just started talking about our second album now, so it will happen but we're not sure when. Certainly not next year, we've both got a couple of albums each planned for 2012, so we might try and have it ready for 2013. There's no rush though, it'll be ready when it's ready; the last thing i want to do is dive into it and force it out, that's why a lot of second albums these days are a bit shit. Bands and labels are desperate to hold onto any momentum and profile a new band has, but we're lucky in that respect because we're not really a new, young band; we've both been making records for ages and there's no pressure on us at all. So 2014 at the earliest!

Bill - Just to add that I'm really looking forward to this, the musical ideas for first album were pretty much all on one cdr I gave Aidan ages ago, then the EP happened pretty quickly this year so, personally, I'm more hopeful for the 2013 result but, whatever and whenever, it'll be great to get working together in the studio again.

Seeing as we are on the subject of albums of the year, what have been your personal favourites of 2012?

Aidan - I would've said Slow Club's Paradise a couple of weeks ago (which I still love) but it's been pipped at the post by the last-minute release of Josh T. Pearson's limited live LP, The King Is Dead, which I think is far superior to his studio album. There's been a lot of very good music this year though, but my memory can never work when it's put on the spot, sorry!

Bill - I look at these end of year lists and realize I haven't heard so many of these records, so it feels like a very uninformed opinion. The last time I was asked I said the re - release of Annette Peacock's 'I'm The One' which is truly one of the greatest records ever made. However after writing that I realized that "That's Reality' by Yumbo, which is Koji Shibuya's (bass player in Maher Shalal Hash Baz) Pop masterpiece, came out in Japan in early 2011.

'Everything’s Getting Older' is out now on Chemikal Underground and it comes with the Scottish BAMS seal of approval. You can order yourself a copy on CD, download or on triple vinyl (which also includes two Bonus 12" featuring 14 exclusive tracks of new material, remixes and demos/ a 12x12 16-page booklet featuring lyrics and sheet music for Bill's compositions/ a data disc with hi-spec audio files of all vinyl tracks plus a recording of Bill & Aidan's first ever concert at Glasgow's Triptych Festival in 2008, here.

We've Got It Covered #70

It's half time in the rugby and I am incredibly pumped up, my heart tells me that Scotland are going to do it. My more sensible head tells me it's all going to end in glorious failure. Having been up since the back of five I am starting to think that I must be due a little bit of luck, then again rarely ever does luck favour Scotland when it comes to sport.
It might be a bit daft to let one wee game of ruby have such a massive bearing on my mood for the rest of the day, but it's pretty damn tough. After last weeks lost loss to Argentina I was pretty much in a stinking mood for the rest of the week. Thankfully though things have started to pick up towards the end of the week as the reviews for The Moth & The Mirror album started to come through. Getting the album of the month in the Skinny had Team Olive Grove squealing like little girls! Yesterday was equally as exciting as the albums got delivered, affa pretty they are too. If you are coming along to the Scottish Independent Record Fair at Platform this evening then this will be the first opportunity that you'll have to get your grubby mitts on a copy. We will of course have all of our back catalogue for sale, plus some specially handmade Randolph's Leap CDs for sale too. The record fair is being put on to coincide with the Eastern Promise show, which features To Rococo Rot, The Pastels, Silje Nes, Animal Magic Tricks and Conquering Animal Sound.Which in a round about way brings me to this weeks cover version which comes from Conquering Animal Sound and their take on Robyn's 'Dancing On My Own'. If you're coming along to the gig make sure you come and see me and Halina at the Olive Grove stall. That's the second half just started, time to get back to the rubgy, fingers and toes crossed...

- Now heartbroken (again)

Friday Freebies

Panda Su
It feels like ages since we've heard anything new from the awesome Panda Su, her last EP, ‘Sticks & Bricks’ was a particular favourite round these parts, and she is now set to release her follow-up EP 'I Begin' in late April. She kicks off a UK tour tonight in Edinburgh at Sneaky Pete's, so if you're in that neck of the woods then get yourself down, oh and make sure you get down early as I Build Collapsible Mountains is supporting. As a prelude to what you can expect from her new EP she's posted up 'Alphabet Song' from it for free download on Soundcloud.

The Kabeedies
This indie-pop outfit are arguably the finest thing to come out of Norwich since Alan Partridge, and now they've very kindly made their new single 'Santiago' available for free download. The band have just embarked on a UK tour, sadly there are no dates planned for north of the border, so you'll have to console yourself with this little pop gem.

Conquering Animal Sound/Debutant
To celebrate the fact that their first release featuring Conquering Animal Sound and Debutant has just broke even, they're giving away all of digital tracks for free. What a nice bunch they are, you can still get your mucky paws on the lovely 7"; vinyl version, although there aren't too many left. Which reminds me, I bought this ages ago and I still haven't bought a record player. Anyone got any suggestions of somewhere I could pick one up for not a lot of pennies?
The label is also putting on a night at the Captians Rest in Glasgow this Saturday to celebrate the release of their new split EP which features The Japanese War Effort, Fox Gut Daata, Miaoux Miaoux and Wounded Knee. If you're not going to Come On Gang!s final show then I would urge you to get along to this one.

Bobby Womb
Next month see Falkirk's finest (excluding Arab Strap), Y'All Is Fantasy Island call it a day with a wee gig in Edinburgh. I don't have the date or venue to hand, sorry, although I am sure Jim 'Ayetunes' will comment with it. Anyway, it's going to be a pretty sad loss as they've been one of the most creative outfits that this wee nation of ours has ever produced. On the plus side it looks as if they're all going to be keep going with music in one way or another. Adam Stafford's album which isn't due out until some time in the summer, is already one of my favourite albums of 2011. But before then you can treat your earbuds to Jon McCall aka Bobby Womb, who used to play clarinet and drums in Yifi, as he's just released a solo EP which you can download for free here.

Airlines
I know I write a music blog, but I honestly don't myself having as much time as I used to in order to listen to new music, that's why I really appreciate getting recommendations from my mates, as it makes my job a lot fucking easier. This is my roundabout way of passing the credit for this freebie on to my friend Ian who writes Have Fun At Dinner. It was him that passed this little nugget on to me last week, it's an awesome wee find and I am chuffed to bits that he passed it on. All you need to know for now is the band are called Airlines and you can download a free mini album here.

French Wives
All good things must come to an end, sadly this week it's the last in the series of the French Wives 'Homefires' posts, which means no more weekly freebies. Going out on a bit of a high with their former single, 'Halloween', the band are now gearing up for their forthcoming new EP, 'Feel Safe Small' and a 17 date tour across the UK. Tickets for their Scottish dates appear to be close to selling out, so make sure you get your tickets well in advance.

Kasule
Technically not a freebie as it's one of those pay what you want scenarios, however, it's too good not to include. I first heard of Kasule after Campfires in Winter were likened to them in a review back last summer, I know the it made Boab very happy but I was none the wiser. That was until they posted up their new album 'demonstration' on their Bandcamp, then I soon realised why he was so chuffed as it's quite simply stunning. My advice would be stream the songs first as you're going to feel pretty guilty after listening to it if you downloaded it for free. Whatever you do, just make sure you check this out.

Josh T Pearson
The former Lift To Experience frontman has just released his new album 'Last of the Country Gentlemen', and the Independent have a free download of track "Woman when I've raised hell" from it for free here.

Lad Lazurus
I came across this freebie via the awesome PAWS, who I will be featuring pretty damn soon. Otherwise I am pretty sure it would have totally passed me by, I can't tell you much about Laz Lazarus, I think they're from up north somewhere. All I do know for certain is that they have some awesome scuzzed pop rocksongs and that a whole load of their tunes are up for grabs for free on their Bandcamp.

The Ballad of Alice & Kitty
I honestly can't remember who tipped me off about this freebie, I must have bookmarked it earlier in the week, but my goldfish like memory fails me. If you're reading this and thinking that was me what tweeted about this, thank you as it's a great wee freebie that deserved to be shared. It's ramshackle country folk at it's very best and you can download it for nowt here.

Entire Cities
Canadian outfit Entire Cities have just released their new album 'I Hope You Never Come Home', of which they've made 'Gimme A Ride' and 'Oh Dear, Oh Dear, Oh Dear' available for free download on their Bandcamp, fans of the Old Steady take note this should be right up your street.

Evil Hand
Derek Bates, one half of Bottle of Evil, has lunched his own solo project Evil Hand, he's recorded a whole abums worth of material and he's very kindly posted it all up for free download on his Bandcamp.

Gigantic Music Sampler
There is a free compilation album on Amazong featuring tracks from The Walkmen, The Rumble Strips and Harlem Shakes, download it here.

Sea of Bees
Head on over to Soundcloud where you will find a free download of Conquering Animal Sound Remixing Wizbot.

J Mascis
Stereogum have a free download of new J Mascis tune 'Is It Done'

Akron/Family
KEXP have a free download of new song 'So It Goes'

Sound of Guns

Download their song 'Breakwater' for free here.

Friday Freebies

Mondegreen
I caught this three piece supporting we're only afraid of NYC last Friday, bloody great they were too. You can have a listen for yourself by downloading their 'Headless' EP for free on their Bandcamp page.

Marthas & Arthurs
The first band to take me up on my newly embeded link to email me any Freebie suggestions, and a wee cracker it is too. They're partly Scottish and they make some gorgeous wee tunes, a fine start if ever I had one. You can download their new EP, 'Apes in Aeroplanes' for free on their Bandcamp page.

Broken Records
The Edinburgh outift have been hidden away writing their second album, 'Let Me Come Home' which is due out on the 25th of October. Recorded in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan, plus guest vocals by Jill O'Sullivan from Sparrow and the Workshop, the album is highly anticipated by many of us Scottish bloggers, as a taster of what to expect you can download, 'A Leaving Song' by signing up to their mailing list.

Conquering Animal Sound

The good folk over at Gerry Loves have just posted up Meaursault's remix of 'Giant' by Conquering Animal Sound up for free download. I'm not normally a fan of remixes, but I think this is rather nifty, get downloading here.

Gold Panda
The experimental instrumental hip hop type has announced that he will release his debut album, 'Lucky Shiner', in October, preceded by a single, 'Snow & Taxis'. However you can already download 'Snow & Taxis' from www.luckyshiner.com just now, which makes feck all sense to me, but what do I know.

Sub Pop

I'm not sure if I have posted this before, mainly because there are so many free compilations up on Amazon these days, even if I have this is worth repeating. There are a load of free tracks up fro grabs from the likes of Wolf Parade, Avi Buffalo, Nirvana and The Shins. Download it here.

Departures
The Detour boys described this band as 'one the best bands in the whole country right now', high compliments indeed. See if you agree by downloading their EP for free here.

Epic26
Give them your details and they will send you a link to download their track “Sorry It Hurts”.

Jim Noir
Mind this guy, he did that 'Eanie Meany' tune a few years back, well he's got a new EP out, it's called 'Melody Junction' and it's free to download here.

Abunai
There is a whole host of free stuff to download from the psychedelic outift, get it over on their Bandcamp page.

The Concretes
A new album is due in November, it's apparently going to be a disco album. Fuck knows what that'll sound like then, This is Fake DIY have a free download of 'Good Evening' taken from said album, if you fancy checking out this new direction they're taking, then you can download it here.

Fight Like Apes
The Irish outfit have posted their track, 'Poached Eggs' taken from their forthcoming album, 'Body of Christ and The Legs of Tina Turner'. All you have to is hit the 'Pay With A Tweet' button and with one tweet or facebook post you get a copy of the song.

Gay Blades
You can get a free download of 'Try To Understand' from The Gay Blades new album 'Savages' for free here.

Kowalskiy's Komplimentary Korner

5-track Scottish EP #2
Continuing on with his series of rarities, Mr Kowalskiy has pulled another rabbit from the proverbial hat this month with a cracking EP featuring rare and unreleased tracks from five Scottish artists. This month he has Beerjacket covering the Xx, The Fusiliers, Evil Hand, The Little Kicks and Washington Irving. The boy continues to outdo himself!

Invisible Elephant

Also featured this week by our good pal the doc featured these guys earlier in the week, he described them as "as easy-listening post-rock, at times like a stripped-back My Bloody Valentine". If that sounds like it'd be up your street, then you can download their album 'The Lights Go Out', up on their Bandcamp page.

Friday Freebies

The National
I was a bit late in actually listening to The National, it wasn't until about a year after 'Boxer' was released that I cottoned on what I was missing out on. My fail, I know. On the plus side though I did have one hell of a back catalogue to work my way through. Anyway, I digress, on Tuesday Lauren Laverne debuted new “Bloddbuzz Ohio” on her 6Music show. This led to several blogs posting radio rips of it. In reaction to this their label 4AD have posted a high quality version of the song to download here. It’s really fucking good, if you only download one freebie today, make sure it's this one.

Adam Stafford
This week we have not one but two freebies from the lovely folk over from Scottish indie 'internet' label Wiseblood Industries. First up is the new album from Adam Stafford, the man who not only runs the label, but is also the lead singer of Falkirk outfit Y'all Is Fantasy Island. His album 'Miniature Porcelain Horse Emporium' is up for free download, bloody good it is too.

Jocky Venkataraman
The second free download from Wiseblood comes from Jocky Venkataraman & Jim Megaw, who's new Post Post Office EP, is also available for free download, go grab yourself a copy here. I'll be honest and admit that I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, hey there's only so much time that I have each week. If Jocky's previous material is anything to go by, then you're in for a treat.

Phoenix
Out of of all of the freebies that I came across this week , this one of my favourites. It's a free download of French band Phoenix recorded live in Sydney. Originally it was made available by the Observer, however, you can bypass all of the filling in your details part by clicking here. It features 9 out of the 10 tracks from their latest album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, and it is cracking.

Teenage Fanclub
Woo hoo the Fannies are back!! And there's a new song out there for free, “Baby Lee,” which is taken from the group’s forthcoming ninth album Shadows is available to download over on Stereogum right now. Bloody lovely it is too.

Trapped in Kansas
It's been quite an exciting week in terms of things news coming from the Ayrshire outfit, not only have they signed up with Daydream Management (Halina and Iona from Glasgow Podcart), but they also posted up some B-sides for free download up on their Bandcamp page. If you like what you hear then you might be pleased to know that they are playing at Sleazy's next Wednesday (the 31st).

Glasgow Podcart
While I am on the subject of the Podcart team, they have made a couple of their live sessions from The Scottish Enlightenment and St Deluxe available for free download. All you need to do is head on over to their flashy new Bandcamp page and get downloading.

Spaghetti Anywhere

A fair few of us Scottish bloggers have already declared our undying love for this twee pop duo, in case you weren't paying attention when Ayetunes, Have Fun at Dinner, Kowalskiy, Elba Sessions and myself posted about them, then this is the time for you to do some catching up. Head over to Toy Soldier Records, sign up to their mailing list and they'll send you a free Spaghetti Anywhere 'Girlfriends with Boyfriends' single.

Hot Chip
Their latest album 'One Life Stand' is already one of my favourite of 2010, if you haven't heard it yet then I would suggest you check it out. If you need some encouragement to check it out, then head over to the Line of Best Fit as they have an exclusive free download of a new remix of their cracking new single “I Feel Better”. Go download it here.

Aqualung
Remember this guy? one of his song was used in an advert a few years back, must have been great to get that bit of exposure, but it pretty much killed his career. Anyway, if you want to hear what he sounds like these days then head over to his homepage for a free download of a new song called 'New Friend'. It's actually pretty damn good.

Peggy Sue
The Brighton based folk trio have posted a collection of songs from all their singles and EP available as a free download! There are 10 songs up there for your aural pleasure, download them all from their Soundcloud page.

Wintersleep
They release one of my favourite albums of last year, 'Welcome to the Night Sky' (although I think it came out back in 2008, possibly 2007 - hey I am bit slow to pick up on things sometimes). They'll be back in May with a new album entitled 'New Inheritors', in promotion of it's release they're giving away a free track from it. It's one of those sign your life away/email address up and they'll send you the song.

The Girobabies
You can get 'Jeremy Kyle' from their Bandcamp page, if you like what you hear then you might be interested to know that their debut EP is released on the 1st of May. Thanks to Jim Ayetunes for the tip.

The Horns of Happiness
Indiana band, the Horns of Happiness have just made their new EP available for free. Just head over to their label Secretly Canadian to download the EP, which includes three previously unreleased songs

Kowalskiy's Komplimentary Corner

Ohbijou
This week our good friend Kowalskiy has pulled two corkers out of the bag, first up we have Ohbijou's Third Floor Session which includes 8 free MP3s. In addition if you have a scour about on the site you can find sessions from DD/MM/YYYY, Kay Pettigrew, Gravity Wave and The Wooden Sky.

Conquering Animal Sound
They might well be the latest buzz band amongst Scottish bloggers/podcasters, but I have to be honest and admit that I hadn't given them a listen until David Kowalskiy sent me this freebie,
A free MP3 of 'Alice shoes (live)' (right click save) is available for free download from the Gizeh Records website . Also up for grabs on their site are tracks from Glisando, Trespassers William and worrieaboutsatan, who in case you'd forgotten, play at the Flying Duck tomorrow night.
