Friday - after a bit of a lull over the past few weeks, Friday Freebies was back with a bit of a bang, highlights included tracks from Admiral Fallow, Thirty Pounds of Bone and Mogwai.
Saturday - Wooden Box With a Fistful of Fivers, Woodenbox With A Fist Full Of Fivers took on Lady Gaga in We've Got It Covered.

News, gigs and any other gubbins......


Once again I am pretty low on news this week, I am away up north visiting my folks this weekend so I haven't had much of a chance to have a hunt about find out what's going on. The only thing I have to report is that my fellow Scottish music blogger, The Daily Dose Sir William Swales of Define Pop promotions have teamed up to put on a gig at the 13th Note in Glasgow on Tuesday (2nd). The line-up is: Super Adventure Club, PAWS, Hagana, Rollor, with doors at 8pm, tickets are £5.

Friday Freebies

Super Adventure Club
As the perjury trial of Tommy and Gail Sheridan entered its second week at the High Court in Glasgow, the good folk at Armellodie had a cracking wee idea. They've decided that it might be fun to soundtrack the whole affair and celebrate the release of Super Adventure Club’s ‘Chalk Horror’ (out on Monday) by giving away a free download of their track ‘Tommy Sheridan’.

Mitchell Museum
Those fabulous 'Museum kids new single 'Tiger Heart Beat' is out this week, if you haven't already seen it make sure you check out the video that goes with it. It's got some serious robot abuse going on! To celebrate it's release they're giving away some remixes of the single, ch-ch-check it.

Lenzie Moss
Featuring Finlay MacDonald of Teenage Fanclub fame, Lenzie Moss are already starting to get a bit of a buzz about them. Mainly on the Fannies message board I might add, you can check them out by downloading a few free tracks from their Bandcamp.

Hey Marseilles
At the start of this week I was lucky enough to have been invited along to record my first proper appearance on the infamous Glasgow Podcart alongside my new partner in crime Halina (Olive Grove) and Luke (I Build Collapsible Mountains). T'was a cracking evening, although I think I'd prefer it if my wife/folks/daughter never heard it! Anyway, while I was there I got introduced to a number of cracking new bands. The stand out being Seattle band, Hey Marseilles, so much so that the first I did when I got home was try and find out a bit more. Here's the two things you need to know to get you started, they have an amazing video and they also have put their song 'Rio' up for free download. Get stuck in as this is cracking stuff.

Shutter
If you missed their session for Vic G a month or so back it's really worth hunting down (clue it's on this site somewhere). I am not normally a big fan of post-rock, but they really pricked my ears up when I heard it. Their album 'Pillars' is really worth hunting down, it certainly does it for me. If you need some convincing then you can start by downloading their track 'Pillars of Creation' for free here.

Young Fathers
Scottish hip hop isn't something that I feature all that often on Peenko, that's mainly cause I know feck all about it. The only artists that I have heard of are Edinburgh's very own Young Fathers. That's mainly through hearing them on Vic's Radio One show, bloody good they are too. You can get yourself some free tunes by heading to their homepage.

Bear Driver
You might remember I did a wee Introducing piece on this lot a few months back, well they're very kindly gotten in touch to let me know that they've posted up new track 'Golden Touch' for free download on their Soundcloud page.

The Rest
I do like it when folk get in touch to tip me off about freebies (hint fucking hint), I especially like it when a band I already like email me to let me know about one of their freebies. As well as Bear Driver getting in touch, I also go a nice email from Canadian outfit, The Rest. So what's so special about that you might wonder, well their album 'Everyone All At Once' was a personal favourite last year. So to find out they have more material coming out soon and that they were giving away new track 'John Huston' for free, made for a pretty exciting email. Get downloading here.

Austin City Limits Festival
There are a whole host of free MP3s up for grabs at Spinner Music, including tracks from Band of Horses, The National, The XX and Beach House among others.

FOUND
Last week in the second of their FOUND Free Fri giveaways, the band gave away their track 'String Theory'. What this weeks freebie will be I couldn't tell you, all you need to know is that it will be good, oh so very good.

The Duke Spirit
The band are about to return with their new EP 'Kusama', you can get 'Everybody's Under Your Spell' from it for free here.

Vessels
There are a couple of freebies up for grabs from Vessels, on their homepage you can download their track 'Ornafives', while over on Sputnikmusic you can find ‘Meatman, Piano Tuner, Prostitute’.

The Japanese War Effort
Edinburgh's one man ambient pop band, The Japanese War Effort's new album, 'Sings of a Dear Green Place' is up for free download on his Bandcamp.

The Sky At Night
Sadly defunct Glasgow outfit, The Sky At Night have posted up their 2006 debut album, "Hope For Dummies"for free download on Soundcloud.

Steve Heron
The Edinburgh singer song writers debut album is due out pretty soon, in anticipation of it's release he's posted up a free download of his track 'Wee Blondie' which you can find here.

Polyvinyl Sampler
There's a free sampler up for grabs here, featuring tracks from Headlights, of Montreal, Mates of State, Architecture in Helsinki and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.

Beastmen
Cork-based instrumental sci-fi surf rock band have just released their new EP, cleverly entitled EP2, and yep you guessed it, it's free. One of their members is originally from Paisley (but don't hold that against them, head on over to Bandcamp and get downloading.

Seams
You can download the first track from Seams EP, 'Hung Markets', for free from on his Bandcamp page.

Kowalski
Nope not the blogger, he's cut his Korner down to a monthly feature. Instead this is a freebie from the Northern Irish band with the same name, head on over to their Bandcamp to get their song 'Navigate November'.

Rose Parade
Up and coming Glasgow starlets, Rose Parade, have a free download of their song 'Summer Skin' available for free download on their Soundcloud page.

CMJ
The date of the New York music convention is fast approaching, that won't be of much use to many of you, or so you may have thought. You can download a whole load of free MP3's from some of the artists playing at it, including Asobi Seksu, Franz Nicolay and Kevin Devine.

In case you missed our big announcement earlier in the week, Ayetunes vs Peenko is back and what a line up we have in store for you this time. Joining us at the Classic Grand on Bonfire Night will be none other than the Seventeenth Century, Come On Gang! and I Build Collapsible Mountains. As part of this years Oxjam Festival, I've managed to secure a pretty awesome lineup, gracing the stage in the name of charity will be none other than Super Adventure Club , Bronto Skylift , Carnivores and Campfires in Winter.All of this for a fiver, cannae complain. Since this is part of Oxjam all the proceeds from the gig will go directly to Oxfam. So come out, do your bit for charity and listen to a night of LOUD and AWESOME music. Tickets are £5 on the door, first come first served, so get down early!



Our good friends over at Elba Sessions celebrate their first birthday next Friday,the 8th of October. In true Elba style they've lined up an eclectic evening at their spiritual home, The Liquid Ship, featuring Cuddly Shark, Julia and The Doogans, Yusuf Azak, Jonathan Sebastian Knight (My Cousin I Bid You Farewell) and Paul McLinden (who was the first performer to grace the Elba stage). Elba blog-master Phil notes: 'Unfortunately we couldn’t ask everyone, there were quite simply too many people and we didn’t quite have it in us to organise a five day festival but we’re proud of the line up and hope that you will join us to celebrate a good year where we have met so many good people who have helped us out, whether it be a mention on their blog, sending us some music to listen to or even the odd follow friday on twitter!!' As it is a special occasion the night has moved from its usual Thursday night slot to Friday. The evening starts at 8.30pm sharp and it is free entry as always.


Tomorrow sees the relaunch of Too Many Fireworks, you might remember I featured them as part of my Scottish DIY Labels feature. The label returns with release of label owner, Neil Milton's 'Elements EP'. Recorded in Neil’s adopted home of Warsaw, the EP contains five short pieces of modern-classical music, each loosely inspired by one of the medieval elements. In August, the collection soundtracked the short film "We Sink Ships: Elements", by the now defunct art collaboration We Sink Ships, when shown at the Edinburgh Arts Festival. Check out the labels homepage for further details.


Former Fresh Meat starlets, Indian Red Lopez, continue their mini tour of Scotland this week. The Aberdeenshire 'guitars 'n' electronics outfit' are at The Greenside in Glenrothes tonight, followed by an appearance King Tuts on Tuesday (5th). In Glasgow the band will be supporting ever-rising Northamptonshire electro-popsters Fenech Soler. The band then had across to Holland for mini tour after that.

Indian Red Lopez - 'My Eyes'

Tonight in Glasgow, Perth based rock outfit The Barent's Sea finish off the last night of their tour with a gig at the Captains Rest. The band have garnered a lot of attention recently, and their high energy live set is apparently quite a sight to behold. Support comes from local acts The Darien Venture, Alburn, and Jack The Wolf. Those lovely Fence folk also used this week to officially announce the line up for this years Halloween Party. They are moving from their spiritual home of Anstruther and showing us Weegies what a party should really be like. Funnily enough it'll take place on Sunday the 31st of October at Stereo and The Old Hairdressers (directly across from Stereo) in Glasgow. Running from 2pm right through till 2am, check this for a line up; King Creosote, James Yorkston, Silver Columns, James Yuill, Lord Cut Glass, Alasdair Roberts , John MacLean (DJ) , Jo Mango, Vladimir Lad, Randolph’s Leap, John B McKenna, Jonnie Common, Gummi Bako, Pictish Trail, plus many more acts still to be announced. Tickets for the gig are £25 and you can buy them here, be quick though as if last years anything to go by this will set out very quickly.

Scots Way-Hay #13 - Super Adventure Club

And now for something completely different.....

For those of a nervous disposition, this might well be the time to look away, as you are about to enter the weird and wonderful world of the Super Aventure Club a scuzzed up head fuck of a band. Yes they're on the same label as last weeks Scot Way-Hay'ers The Scottish Enlightenment, the similarities end there. Based in Glasgow, the trio have created a unique sound which is clearly differentiates them from pretty anything else that is coming out of Scotland at the moment. It is at this point that I feel that I should apologise to Jim 'Ayetunes' and Phil 'Elba Sessions', you were right, I was wrong. The pair of them have been on at me about these guys for ages, how could I be so stupid as to ignore a band that has come up with song titles like 'Hip Hop Hot Pot Pot Noodle'.......

Would you care to introduce yourself?

Neil: We are SAC, i'm Waz, the funny looking one. We are three friends exploring the the sonic realms and leaving no stone unturned in our adventure to find the future sound.

Bruce: I’m Bruce, the one with the big gay following.

Mandy: Hello, I am Mandy, I play the lowest and sing the highest.


How would you describe the music you make?

Neil: Fun, playful, extreme, relentless and above all good. We strive to make our own music, music that you could say 'it sounds like SAC'. there is of course influence from other artists in our style (we're all massive music 'fans') but we're three quite different people and that should make something unique, if we play together and end up sounding like another band then we'd be very disappointed.

Mandy: It's like the musical equivalent of Screwball Scramble. Or maybe like a really intense game of Hungry Hippo's, like it's pretty fun but it's quite erratic, ye have to totally go nuts on that Hippo's head otherwise you'll never get the ball. No-one ever gets the ball though.

Bruce: Yeah it’s pop with an attention disorder.

How did you come together as a band?

Mandy: Bruce and I met in Argos years ago, moved to Edinburgh, went to college together and started a band called Stepdads, we split up after a few years and decided to start a new band, after one gig with SAC the original drummer left and Bruce wanted to call it quits unless I could convince Waz to play with us. So we hunted down Waz, kidnapped him, locked him in a chamber and fed him only Haribo, luckily for us Waz is well into that shit, so he agreed.

Neil: I thought the music was mad, it wasn't really up my street at the time, I was playing in more straight ahead stoner rock and punk bands, it took months to get my head round some of the music but I’ve managed to keep my head above the water since then.

How did you start out making music?

Neil: I was one of those youngsters who played the piano and loved it as much as i hated it, i remember wanting to quit a lot my parents would say, "give it an extra couple of weeks, then you can decide" by which time I'd be enjoying it again, crafty bastards. I eventually found my way onto a drum kit and that got me the exercise I lacked being a non-football enthusiast.

Bruce: I got a guitar aged 16, learned ‘Zombie’ by The Cranberries, and it all spiraled from there. Mandy: I used to rock my keyboard all day in primary school.

What process goes into the way you write songs?

Bruce: Usually I have a few idea fragments that the other guys put parts to, then we structure it. The more song-ey ones are usually structured before I take it to the guys, but it's very much a democracy - if I have an idea that gets overruled then fair do's, it'll be for the better once my ego calms down.

Neil: I think a lot of thought goes into writing; whilst we're away from our instruments we talk about how stuff could be done differently how things could be changed or developed, these conversations usually happen on buses or in vans. We continue writing the music after the "ahh, that's another one in the bag" moment. We get the bare bones, the structure and the lyrics down, and then that's when the writing really starts. We never look at a song and say, "well that's perfect", things are always evolving. It's a virtue to know when you've had enough, unfortunately Super Adventure Club lack that virtue...

Tell us a little about what influences you. Are there any artists in particular you would consider to be major influences on your music?

Neil: People tend to mention Zappa when talking about influences, and although we'd like to think our music is more pop the truth is prog rock artists have a huge influence on us. Zappa is an influence not only with the music he created but the way he created it, his willingness to experiment freely without giving a monkeys about his popularity levels, making good music was all he cared about. His extreme work ethic is also something we hugely admire even if we do somewhat lack it.

Mandy: I'm mainly influenced by unicorns and rainbows. I like music too, I really like music, loads.

You released your new record ‘Avoid Zombies’ through Armellodie Records, how did that come about?

Mandy: Al (Armellodie Records) and Bruce have been participating in anal fun for years, I guess now Bruce just put a price on it. Haha joke (or is it!?) right, no, Waz done a jobby on Al's head and Al was like SACre bleu! Right no, sorry, sorry. Waz knew Al from Aberdeen, they reunited at bar bloc one night, Al liked us so basically he just asked us if we wanted to sign up with Armellodie, naturally, we said yes. How could you say no to a man with a smile like that, those teeth, they're so great.

Neil: Al (Armellodie Records) owes me favours for keeping my mouth shut about the whole Maple vs Nero gay orgy accident (it was supposed to be a good night in like any other but it turned into a blood bath that resulted in the loss of teeth, life and the eventual collapse of two good Aberdeen bands) so he arranged to help SAC in all ways! But seriously, if you've got braces don’t give head to a guy with a pierced cock.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2010?

Mandy: More touring for sure, the album going platinum probably, new single in June, we've started writing new stuff too, supporting Cypress Hill, but definitely not supporting Kanye West. No way he can forget it.

We Have Lift Off

Launch nights, are they really like buses, na not really but alas we have two which have come up pretty quickly after one another. January is notoriously a pretty shitty month for gigs, everyone's skint and there's generally not much going on apart from Celtic Connections. This year might well buck this trend as there are not one but two cracking wee gigs lined up in the first couple of weeks of January. First up is the launch night for We Sink Ships Radio, at the 13th Note this Friday (08/01/10), which boasts a line up of the second hand marching band, Benni Hemm Hemm, Euan McMeeken (The Kays Lavelle) and beneath us, the waves (DJing). A cracking wee line up if I do say so myself, it's only four quid so it shouldn't break the camels back in that long wait until payday.
We Sink Ships is an interesting collaboration between Heidi Kuisma, a Finnish, Glasgow based photographer and Neil Milton, a Scottish photographer, musician and record label owner who now lives in Warsaw in Poland. Together they create and curate online photo exhibitions and now present a show on Radio Magnetic called (unsurprisingly) We Sink Ships Radio, you can download a sampler of the Podcast here. Well worth checking out if you like your Scottish music.

The following Friday (14/01/10) after that we have Ten Tracks in Stereo, a new monthly gig night in Stereo, Glasgow. Which boasts a line up of Super Adventure Club, Tokamak, Fear the Fives. Quite a nice wee line up they have going on there, cash might be even tighter by then, so you can't really complain at £1 entry fee. Personally I'd be there in a shot, except I'l; be away n Bremen for a mates stag, anyone been there? Anything worth visiting?
Anyway, I digress, if you haven't heard of Ten Tracks before it's well worth checking out, it's a monthly Scottish-based music download service (run by the Skinny I think) where you can download ten quality songs for the bargain sum of one measly pound. It's a great wee idea as it allows you to discover great music for not a lot, while also making sure that the musicians get something back. For a more logical explanation as to what it's all about head on over to their website, Ten Tracks. Further details on the night at Stereo are available on their Facebook page.
