Friday Freebies

Zoey Van Goey
Tomorrow night at Stereo, Zoey Van Goey are going to be celebrating the released of their very limited edition remix EP. The EP which is called ‘Sexy Rave Eye Zooming’, is limited to just 350 copies, features remixes from local luminaries such as We Were Promised Jetpacks, FOUND, Jonnie Common, Adam Stafford, GRNR, K-Projekt, Gareth Griffiths, On The Fly, and Miaoux Miaoux. The only way to get a physical copy of one of the CDs is by going to the gig, which also features special guests Kid Canaveral, live remixes from GRNR, plus visuals from Katy Wilson.
In anticipation of the gig/EP you can download We Were Promised Jetpacks remix of City Is Exploding for free on Bandcamp.

Stevie Jackson
Not one to rest on his laurels, Belle & Sebastian's Stevie Jackson has been busy working away on his debut album, (I Can't Get No) Stevie Jackson. As a wee taster of what you can expect he's made the track 'Man of God' available for a limited period as a free download. If this is anything to go by then this could be one cracking wee album, it certainly sounds a lot more enjoyable than his full time band have done in recent years.

I Build Collapsible Mountains
The older I get, the more time flies by, I could have sworn that the forthcoming I Build Collapsible Mountains album wasn't out for months yet. It is in fact out on the 11th of October, almost exactly a year to the day after I released his debut EP. I have heard the album and can vouch that it's a fucking great wee album, you don't have to take my word for it though as you can download the lead track from the album, Face Of Thunder Grin, for free here.

The True Gents
Perthshire musical collective, The True Gents' are giving away their new single as a free download here (right click save). Fans of folk like Washington Irving and the French Wives should really check these guys out.

Asian Dub Foundation
Bloody hell, who knew that Asian Dub Foundation were still going, obviously not fucking me that's who. It's always nice when something like this from your past comes along, it reminds me of fun times dancing like a loon ball to 'Free Satpal Ram', ah those were good times. Anyway, they band have released an exclusive free remix of their track “Where’s All The Money Done?” which you can find here.

Bird And The Monkey
Scottish left-field pop duo, Bird And The Monkey have their new Ossie Dean EP free to download on their homepage. I have only had a chance to listen to the EP once, but I will certainly be going back for a few more listens as this is rather lovely stuff.

Honey
The Glasgow dream poppers have just released their new single 'Nowhere Floating', as a free download on their Bandcamp page. If you like what you hear then you can catch the band live on the following dates: G2 - September 30th, The Captain's Rest - October 9th, Club 520 - October 21st and Stairway - November 4th.

Tanera Heights
Glasgow three piece, Tanera Heights have made their new E.P free to download, you can grab yourself a copy here.

Drunk Mule
Bloody hell, Drunk Mule aren't ones for sitting on their hands, having only just recently posted up an albums worth of free material, they've now just made new track 'Crash Test Y'self' free to download on Bandcamp.

Friday Freebies

Chemikal Underground
If you haven't already signed up to Chemikal Underground's mailing list, then you clearly haven't paid a blind bit of notice to anything I say. Not that I can blame you for not listening to me, but in all seriousness you really should sign up. So before you start festing on this weeks freebies go and sign up here. Just so you know what freebies you missed, this month they added some free tunes from new signing RM Hubbert and anew tune from Zoey Van Goey. You can download both songs here.

Freelance Whales

There are now two singles from the amazing Freelance Whales up for free download, their first second single, “Day Off” is available for free download here , while their first single, "Enzymes" is also up for grabs here. As if that wasn't enough, if you head over to their homepage you'll find a free download of 'Generator 2nd Floor'.

Sleeping Bag
This freebie came courtesy of a tweet from Paul Carlin, so cheers for the tip mate. I have toyed with the idea of doing a freebie of the week for a while now, but I can never quite make my mind up. This week it would be between the French Wives freebie below, and this download frm Sleeping Bag. I am not going to pretend that I had heard of Sleeping Bag before, I am not hipster enough for that anymore. All I can say for certain is that they've certainly caught my attention with this catchy lo-fi pop tune. Hopefully I have done enough to perk your interest with my ramblings, if you've come this far then you are in for a treat. Fuck it, all you need to know is that you can download their song 'Slime' for free on their Bandcamp. Awesome stuff.

El Hombre Trajeado
This previously unreleased collaboration with Mick Cooke, was recorded as part of the much missed Glaswegian post-rock outfits Saccade sessions. They thought it was too happy for their record. You can ownload it here.

30lbs of bone
On Wednesday I tipped him as one of my Ones To Watch for this year, now that Friday has come round it's time to share this recent show recorded in Leipzig, Germany available for free on Woodland Recordings (scroll to the very bottom of the page). There are also a whole load of other free recordings up for grabs on there, so tuck in.

Mike Watt
The punk legend has a free download of his new song, “Arrow-Pierced-Egg-Man” available for free download here.

Kowalskiy
His Korner may well be a distant memory, but my blogger mate Kowalskiy is continuing on with his awesome series of EP's from the best of Scottish music. In this his 7th in the series of monthly EP, he's lined Amy Duncan, eagleowl, The Colourful Band, Lonely Tourist and Lovers Turn To Monsters. Now that's quite a line up, you can download it for free on his Bandcamp.

French Wives
As I said already, this is my joint favourite freebie of this week (seeing that written down makes me sound really childish doesn't it?), I am not going to deny that I am a massive fan of the French Wives. It was this song that actually got me into the band in the first place, it's a cracking wee pop tune. It's called 'Dogfight' and you can download it for free on their Myspace as part of their series of Homefires posts.

FOUND
I've not a clue what this weeks freebie from the FOUND boys is going to be, I can however, tell you that tickets for their album launch went on sail this week. If you haven't already bought yourself one, now's the time to get your skates on as early bird tickets are only at £4. The ticket price will rise to £5 on 1 February, £6 on 14 February and will be available for £7 on the door. So get 'em while you can, also in case you were wondering the album is awesome. On with the freebie, as I said before I've no idea what it is, all I know for sure is that you'll find it on their Bandcamp

DeVotchka
I don't think I could name any songs from DeVotchka apart from the one from the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack. I am pretty sure that I would really like them as well. If I needed a starting point, a free download might be a good starting point. So now that their new song, '100 Other Lovers' is available to download on Stereogum, I might well have to do some more swatting up.

Jeniferever
'Waifs & Strays' is available to download for free here.

The Dodos
Having just announced a European tour that finishes up in Glasgow, just now would be a good time to get yourself re-acquainted with this duo (actually are they still a duo? I haven't been paying attention recently). You can download new song 'Drone 2' here in exchange for your email address.

Cold War Kids
Has anyone heard their new album yet? I am not sure if I am going to bother after the shambles that was their last album. Freebie-wise, RCRD label have posted 'Mine Is Yours (Passion Pit Remix)' download it here.

The Mountain Goats
Here's a band I have heard a lot about, but never bothered to listen to. They seem to get a lot of hipster gets knickers in a twist, if you're one of these people then you might be interested to know that you can download new song “Damn These Vampires” via Stereogum.

Waterson
Scottish electronica artist Waterson celebrates this year ’s Burns Day festivities with a specially recorded version of ‘Ae Fond Kiss’ which you can download for free on his Facebook page.

Parts & Labor

Friday Freebies

Call To Mind
Kicking this weeks freebies off, we have a cracking wee festive tune from those fabulous Call To Mind boys. You can download their gorgeous wee tune, 'Learning Alone Again (Merry Christmas)' for nowt on their Soundcloud page. If their debut album which is pencilled in for some time next year is half as good as this then we're in for a right treat.

Zoey Van Goey
I am sure that I am not alone in looking forward to the forthcoming Zoey Van Goey's album 'Propeller Versus Wings'. Well as a wee taster of what you can expect to hear they've posted up new song 'My Aviator' taken from it for free on their Bandcamp.

Beach House
The dream pop outfit recorded a holiday song a few days ago, you can download their holiday gift for free here.

Duncan and the Ex-Teens
It really feels as if a new Dananananaykroyd side project crops every week at the moment. You'd think they'd be busy enough as it is, what with sunning it up in LA recording their new album. But being the creative bunch that they are they continue to produce amazing tunes, the latest side project comes from Duncan who has posted up his EP 'Songs, I Know' on Bandcamp.

French Wives
It's the fifth week in the series of Home Fires posts from those lovely French Wives, this week they're giving away 'Small Time Crooks'. Apparently this is a long lost French Wives song that they don't really play any more for 2 reasons: 1. they don't really like it and 2. it's quite difficult to play. They sound like pretty good reasons to me. You can download the tune here.

Gargleblast Records
"Available digitally for the first time, a one-off Xmas EP featuring exclusive recordings by De Rosa, Foxface and Pan. Originally a CD-R release, one hundred hand made copies were given away at the Gargleblast Christmas party in 2007". Download it here.

Chemikal Underground

Not signed up to the Chemikal Underground mailing list yet, then you are a nugget. As it's fucking ace and every month you get free stuff, cause they're dead nice. This month they're giving away a free download of a wee compilation called 'A Chemikal Xmas Present' - With Thanks And Love'. You'll find that and plenty of other free downloads here.

REM
As a wee Christmas gift REM are giving away a free download of their new track 'Discoverer', to get it all you have to do is give them your email address.

FOUND
It's week 12 of FOUND's Free Friday series in the build up to the release of their third album in March. As always I have no idea what it's going to be, but I am sure it'll be cracking as always.

Seafieldroad
Having release a corer of an album last month, Andrew from Swimmer One has decided to giev away some free tunes from his side project every other week. Kicking it all off you can download one of his old demo's 'Fanbloodytastic' for free on his Bandcamp.

Otherpeople
Ye another band giving away a wee festive tune for free are those lovely Otherpeople, quite possibly the hardest band to google ever. Thankfully though you don't have to go hunting for their tunes as you can get their Christmas song '2 zero double 1 (the festive song)' for free here. Rather good it is too.

My Cousin I Bid You Farewell

There is a free download of My Cousin I Bid You Farewell's song, 'I'm Yours' up for free download on their Bandcamp Be quick mind as it's only going to be up for a wee while longer.

Hectares
I've always been a sucker for things that are a bit ramshackle, Hectares EP 'The Zooey Deschanel Pity Fuck Adventure Dream' certainly falls into that bracket. Plus that's possibly the greatest release title I've seen all year. You can download it for free on their Bandcamp.

The Forest & The Trees
The Swedish duo have posted up a cracking wee festive number, 'Santa Claus is coming' for free on their Bandcamp. I fully guarantee this song will put a huge grin on yer chops.

Toro y Moi
Here's one for all you hipsters, it's a free download of a new track from the forthcoming Toro y Moi album, it's called 'Still Sound' and you can find it here.

Stray Kites
Lo-fi duo, Stray Kits have a cracking wee album called 'One Day, Earth Time' up for free download on their Bandcamp. It kind of reminds me a wee bit of some of Adam Green of Moldy Peaches fame. Which is all good in my book.

Miss the Occupier

You can download the spiky indie pop trio's song 'All Day' for free here.

The Mountain Goats

Stereogum have a free download of new Mountain Goats track, 'Tyler Lambert’s Grave, you can find it here.

Gorman
Another act getting with a festive tune to share are Glasgow's very own Gorman, who's tune 'Snow' is available to download for free here.

Idiot Glee
Fans of Perfume Genius take note as this will probably be right up your street. There is a free EP called An Idiot Glee Christmas up for grabs here.

Clockwork Radio
The Manchester based band, with members coming from North Wales and Egypt have just released their second, The Soul Harmonic EP and yep you guess it, it's free. Kudos goes out to Oh So Fresh for the tip, nice find.

Kowalskiy's Komplimentary Korner

It feels like ages since I've posted the last Kowalskiy EP, but it's been more than worth the wait. This month he's got exclusive tracks from Dirty Cuts, Johnny Reb, The Parrifins, Mamoeth and Thirty Pounds of Bone. Download them all here for free here.

We've Got It Covered #16

I originally had this drafted to go up a few weeks back, but then the amazing Randolph's Leap took up the challenge to record Ivor Cutler's 'Everybody Got', so the 'Goey got bumped back. Hopefully you'll think that it's been worth the wait, recorded as part of their session for Marc Riley last June. The song stays pretty true to the original version, which is not a bad thing in my eyes, as it still sounds distinctly like the Glasgow trio.

Weekly Round Up (18/04/2010)

Monday - Ross Drummond aka Electro-pop outfit 'Lies' were my Fresh Meat
Tuesday - Vic Galloway's return from the other side pond meant that I could get back onto recording some sessions. It was North Atlantic Oscillation, again (?!), thankfully this time round the session went well. The less said about the first two songs from the Radio One session, the better.
Wednesday - The Hubmeister General (RM Hubbert) became the 11th 'member' of the Scots Way-Hay club, giving one of the most interesting set of answers to date. In addition to this, Peter Parkers recorded a wee session for Marc Riley's 6Music show. Rather good it was too.
Thursday - Peenko favourites Mitchell Museum were in session on Huw Stephens Radio One show, it was a belter of a session. Plus we even got a wee plug for our gig. Although Mr Stephens did make Kid Canaveral sound more like a venereal disease and said it was part of the Campfires in Winters festival. I know I shouldn't complain, but us bloggers can be a right bunch of bitches sometimes.
I also posted King Creosote's session for the Marc Riley show. Seriously how gorgeous was that?! Also, I really don't know how I/this blog would cope without the legend that is Mr Riley. I also posted a wee interview with Walter Micklethwait (try saying that after a few beers, it's almost as difficult as Little Yellow Ukuleles), one of the organisers of the amazing Insider Festival . He was number seven in my 'Community Care' feature, I'm sure you'll agree that it was worth the wait, now all I need to do is think who my next victim might be...
Friday - is always about the freebies, my personal favourites were from Antlers, Cults and the Evening Chorus. It really does that I am finding more and more stuff each week, is this the way forward for bands these days......

15 Years of Chemikal Underground at Celtic Connections

Next years will see the rather wonderful Chemikal Underground record label hitting the ripe old age of 15, and to celebrate they will be hosting their own night as part of Celtic Connections. Taking place on Sunday the 31st of January, the line up boasts an array of talent from their roster, including the debut live performance of The Unwinding Hours, the band formed by ex-members of Aerogramme. The line up in full looks like something like this

The Unwinding Hours

Bill Wells
Adrian Crowley
Zoey Van Goey

with other surprise guests to be announced, possibly on the evening (don't you just hate it when they tease you).
