Fresh Meat Monday - Run Lucky Free
Would you care to introduce yourself?
Hello!! We are an Edinburgh based band called Run Lucky Free. We have four members and are from different areas in Scotland – our singer Rachael is from the Isle of Skye, Daniel the guitarist is from Aberdeen, Fergus our drummer is from Glasgow and Sam our bassist is from Edinburgh.
How would you describe the music you make?
Our music is mainly a blend of indie, rock and pop. We aim to create dynamic music with a tight rhythm section, atmospheric guitars and emotive vocals. The lyrics of each song tell its own story and we hope that listeners find our songseasily relatable.
How did you start out making music?
We met whilst studying music at University. Originally we played songs that Rachael had written as a solo artist prior to University, but after a few gigs together we realised that we worked really well together and had similar ideas of what direction we wanted the music to go in. From then on we started writing and jamming together as a four piece and have continued to do so since.
What process goes into the way you write songs?
We don’t have a set way or method for writing our songs – sometimes it is a lyric that sparks an idea for a certain ambience that we want to create and we jam it out. Other times it’s a guitar riff, a bass line or a drum beat that we work around and build up into a song.
We’re really meticulous when we write and it can take us ages to perfect a song. We concentrate on every single aspect and we play it in literally every way it can be played until we are happy with it – down to the note.
We have a lot of fun writing because we write as a four piece, rather than one person dictating how the songs should be. There is no rush so we take our time and enjoy the writing process.
What can people expect from your live shows?
Performing live is our favourite part of being in a band. We described our music earlier as dynamic and atmospheric and this is what we aim to create in a live environment. Our shows are definitely not ‘get up and jump around’ kind of gigs, but we hope that the songs and lyrics grasp the audience and that they find it as enjoyable as we do. Being on tour forever more is the dream.
What are you all listening to at the moment?
We are enjoying a lot of Scottish bands at the moment after trawling online for good bands to play with during our tour in October. The Imagineers, Maydays, Jakil, Miasma and Trapped in Kansas are some of our favourites right now.
Other than that we are listening to Wintersleep, Still Life Still, Manchester Orchestra, Bright Eyes, Bombay Bicycle Club, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Marina and the Diamonds, The Black Keys and Cage the Elephant.
Bands we are all always listening to and inspired by are: Fleetwood Mac, Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jeff Buckley, Sam Cooke, The Beach Boys, Bowie, Bob Marley, Hendrix, The Police, Pink Floyd etc. The classics.
What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2011?
We have been very busy this year gigging and recording. We were extremely fortunate to be able to record our new single ‘The Factory’ at the amazing Castlesound studios with Garry Boyle and have been working for a few months building up to its release, which is on the 3rd of October 2011.
We are going on our first Scottish tour to coincide with the release and are playing in the Isle of Skye, Inverness, Glasgow, Stirling and Edinburgh - so we are really excited for that!!
Hopefully by the end of the year we will be back in the studio recording some of our new material ready for our next release in 2012.
