Fresh Meat Monday - Run Lucky Free

Would you care to introduce yourself?

Hello!! We are an Edinburgh based band called Run Lucky Free. We have four members and are from different areas in Scotland – our singer Rachael is from the Isle of Skye, Daniel the guitarist is from Aberdeen, Fergus our drummer is from Glasgow and Sam our bassist is from Edinburgh.

How would you describe the music you make?

Our music is mainly a blend of indie, rock and pop. We aim to create dynamic music with a tight rhythm section, atmospheric guitars and emotive vocals. The lyrics of each song tell its own story and we hope that listeners find our songseasily relatable.

How did you start out making music?

We met whilst studying music at University. Originally we played songs that Rachael had written as a solo artist prior to University, but after a few gigs together we realised that we worked really well together and had similar ideas of what direction we wanted the music to go in. From then on we started writing and jamming together as a four piece and have continued to do so since.

What process goes into the way you write songs?

We don’t have a set way or method for writing our songs – sometimes it is a lyric that sparks an idea for a certain ambience that we want to create and we jam it out. Other times it’s a guitar riff, a bass line or a drum beat that we work around and build up into a song.

We’re really meticulous when we write and it can take us ages to perfect a song. We concentrate on every single aspect and we play it in literally every way it can be played until we are happy with it – down to the note.

We have a lot of fun writing because we write as a four piece, rather than one person dictating how the songs should be. There is no rush so we take our time and enjoy the writing process.

What can people expect from your live shows?

Performing live is our favourite part of being in a band. We described our music earlier as dynamic and atmospheric and this is what we aim to create in a live environment. Our shows are definitely not ‘get up and jump around’ kind of gigs, but we hope that the songs and lyrics grasp the audience and that they find it as enjoyable as we do. Being on tour forever more is the dream.

What are you all listening to at the moment?

We are enjoying a lot of Scottish bands at the moment after trawling online for good bands to play with during our tour in October. The Imagineers, Maydays, Jakil, Miasma and Trapped in Kansas are some of our favourites right now.

Other than that we are listening to Wintersleep, Still Life Still, Manchester Orchestra, Bright Eyes, Bombay Bicycle Club, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Marina and the Diamonds, The Black Keys and Cage the Elephant.

Bands we are all always listening to and inspired by are: Fleetwood Mac, Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jeff Buckley, Sam Cooke, The Beach Boys, Bowie, Bob Marley, Hendrix, The Police, Pink Floyd etc. The classics.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2011?

We have been very busy this year gigging and recording. We were extremely fortunate to be able to record our new single ‘The Factory’ at the amazing Castlesound studios with Garry Boyle and have been working for a few months building up to its release, which is on the 3rd of October 2011.

We are going on our first Scottish tour to coincide with the release and are playing in the Isle of Skye, Inverness, Glasgow, Stirling and Edinburgh - so we are really excited for that!!

Hopefully by the end of the year we will be back in the studio recording some of our new material ready for our next release in 2012.

Laki Mera
I have to admit that Laki Mera had until recently completely passed me by, however, have to hearing them record a number of session they've somewhat turned my head with their electronic folk-pop. DJ Shadow
Californian hip-hop artist, DJ Shadow has just released his new single 'Warning Cell' which is taken from his forthcoming album 'The Less You Know The Better'. It features the elusive Tom Vek and you can download it for free by clicking 'like' on Facebook.

Lisa Hannigan

Ghost Pants
Not content with his duties as the drummer in Dananananaykroyd, Paul Carlin has been busy working away on his solo project Ghost Pants. Having already released a series of cracking EPs and singles which he gave away for free, now he's just posted up his first ever Ghost Pant's album 'In Ochre'. I guess it's not much of a secret that I am big fan of this lo-fi side project, so it should come as no surprise that I have been enjoying this album a lot this week (well since yesterday at least. You can download it now via Bandcamp, it's one of those pay what you want deals, so it's up to you if you want to part any cash.

Pioneers Of Anaesthetic
One thing that I am really open to is recommendations of artists that I should check out, in the past few months a couple of folk have suggested that I check out Steven Cossar aka Pioneers Of Anaesthetic. Having listened to a shed load of stuff on his SoundCloud page, I have pretty much been listening to his stuff none stop this week. You can make your own mind up whether his music is for you by downloading his 27 track album (they're very short songs) 'Freak Past-Tense Despatch Hatch (Ocula)' for free on his Bandcamp page.

You can download all of these tracks for free via his Bandcamp.

Where We Lay Our Heads
It feels like ages since i have posted anything from Glagsow outfit, Where We Lay Our Heads, not that they haven't been up to much, it's just that I am a bit rubbish at keeping on top of things these days. If you're out and about tomorrow they're supporting I Am From Barcelona at the Arches in Glasgow. In anticipation of the gig they're giving away their track 'A Collapsed Lung' for free in exchange for a tweet/facebook post.

Laurence Made Me Cry
It's not very often that I pay attention to up and coming music that isn't Scottish, pretty much because I just don't have the time to anymore. However, occasionally I do pick up on bits and bobs that trickle through. This week I have been listening to a lot to Cardiff folk singer, Laurence Made Me Cry, aka Jo Whitby, her The Rain Song EP is up for free download on her Bandcamp and it's well worth checking out.

Drunk Mule
I had meant to post this up last week, but that's not to say that it's not worth checking out. I am not 100% certain where Drunk Mule are from, I somehow have the idea they're from Fife, but then again I might well be talking pish. One thing I can say for certain is that there's a whole host of stuff up for grabs on their Bandcamp, if you like good time bluesy rock, then this should be right up your street.

King Creosote
King Creosote's newest, as yet unreleased, album 'My Nth Bit Of Strange In Umpteen Years' was played seven times in its entirety at the Homegame Fence bash. Attendees were encouraged to record the gig and share it around. Here's what the good man had to say about it. "My next album isn't going to be recorded at all, it's only going to be a live experience. I'm going to do seven performances of the album at Homegame in a small room that only holds about 40 people, and what I've insisted on is that the audience records it for themselves on all sorts of cheap, portable equipment (dictaphones, old Mp3 players, mobile phones, etc.) and then passes it around. The idea being that if it's true that passing files around and file-sharing helps build a live audience then this will be the proof in the pudding. But those songs won't exist outside the live performance."
Some of the live recordings are already starting to surface online, here are some of the links that I have comes across so far. Link one here, Link 2 (split into two parts), Link 3 (again split into two parts)
