Too Much Music, Too Little Time

I love music, it is without doubt one of the most important things in my life. I have no discernible musical talent, to be honest I never really wanted to learn an instrument.
There are occasions when I wish that I'd bothered my backside to pick up a guitar and try it out, although to be honest I much prefer to be the spectator than the player.
You might have noticed that I rarely do any reviews, to be honest I don't think I am justified in critiquing something that someone has worked hard on to then slate it when I can't play one note.

At the moment though I do feel kind of swamped by music, be it recommendations from others, listening to radio shows and podcasts or from folk mailing me stuff. It's getting harder filter out what's good and what's not, being a blogger there almost feels like there is a battle to 'discover' something new. Which means that quite often things can be over hyped far too quickly, then discarded quickly after. For me this has kind of killed my enjoyment of music as that rush means that you don't have as much time to digest music. I know I have been guilty and will probably be so again, of over-hyping a band or artist. It's just that nature of blogging I'm afraid, and probably of the music industry as a whole. The clammer to be their first is just too hard to resist, the old analogy of throw enough shit at a wall and something is likely to stick, is very apt in this case.
Over the past year I have listened to a lot of great Scottish music, and some pretty terrible stuff. Hopefully I've been able to filter through some of the good stuff and you've come across something new that you really liked. As it really does feel like I get to hear something new that I reckons good I have decided to start up not one but two (possibly three) weekly posts.
The first is going to be called 'Fresh Meat Monday', as the title suggests I will be trying to bring you something completely new that you haven't heard of before.
The second will be 'Scots Way-Hay' on a Wednesday, which will be a feature on more established artists that I like and hope you do too.
Lastly, I am planning to do a few posts which should introduce you to other Scottish Music websites, such as bloggers, pocasters, etc. that I reckon deserve your attention.

So starting tomorrow there should be a bit more to read on here, oh and Boab has also said he might bring back his 62 Weekly Word Review (looking forward to that). Stick with me, I promise it'll be good, or less shite at least

New Multi Venue Festival in Edinburgh

Two days ago I mentioned that festivals in Edinburgh seem to always have Broken Records on the bill, then just to prove me wrong along comes Haddow Festival.
Taking place on Sunday the 28th of March, Haddow Fest is a one day event being held in various venues across Edinburgh on Sunday 28th March 2010, using a Camden Crawl format. The line up looks no bad, the obvious standouts being Idlewild and We Were Promised Jetpacks. Venues being used are The Bongo Club, ,Electric Circus, Cabaret Voltaire, Sneaky Petes, TGVs, Maggies Chambers and Whisky Binnies.
The only major flaw in my book is that it takes place on a Sunday, but then again that's probably just because I have turned into a grumpy old man and the thought of a Monday morning hangover is just too much to bare. What do you mean I could always not have a drink, feck off......

Here's the line up in full......
Idlewild, The Dykeenies, We Were Promised Jetpacks, My latest Novel, The 10:04’s, The Paddintons, Sergeant, Jim Gellatly (venue host), London Blackmarket, The Chapman Family, The Nature Boys, Imperial Racing Club, The OK Social Club, Pose Victorious, Make Sparks, Tango In The Attic, Mitchell Museum, The Vivians, Epic 26, Delta Mainline, The Hot Lips, The Void, The Electric Ghosts, Ardentjohn, The Gillyflowers, The Machine Room, Two Stripe, The Shermans, The Leads, Cancel The Astronauts,, Lost In Audio, The Valkarys, Dead Sea Souls, Sebastian Dangerfield, The Strands, The Rigbys, The High Lines, Jakil, Alfonzo, The Asps, The Debuts, Aaron Wright, A Day Overdue and Arrows Of Love.

Early bird tickets are on sale now, priced at £15 (full price tickets will be £20), you can
buy your tickets here. For further information head over the Festivals Myspace.

Oh and my money is still on Broken Records making an appearance at some point..... ;)

breathe a sigh of relief...

January is nearly over, thank god!As I guess most of you are in a fairly similar boat to my good self, you've been counting down the days until pay day, whilst avoiding checking your bank balance. Or perhaps that's just me. Next weekend should prove to be a relief to most of you, finally you're going to be able actually afford to do something fun with your weekend. Thankfully next weekend sees an abundance of events taking place for you to go and sample some fine music whilst enjoying a couple of shandies (you've earned it).

First up is the Hidden Door Festival in Edinburgh, a new venture aimed at bringing together innovative artists from all disciplines to create an exciting multi-sensory snapshot and celebration of the incredible creativity in the arts, all under one roof for a whole weekend.

Basically it's a mini festival at the Roxy Art House and The Bowery, which will feature 40 artists, 30 bands, 10 poets and 10 film makers. Bands taking part include Broken Records, North Atlantic Oscillation and Panda Su. Tickets for each day are £10, with the added bonus of a free download from Ten Tracks with each ticket purchased. For more more information check out their Homepage, then buy your tickets here.

If you fancy doing your bit for charity whilst also having a fun day out then Sick Kids Sunday 2 at the GRV in Edinburgh might be more up your street. After the success of the event in May last year, the event is back again with a line up which boasts a line up including Zoey Van Goey, Martin John Henry and Meurasult. Considering it's only £8 a ticket and all proceeds go to charity this should be a must for all you Edinburgh folk (unless you're going to the Hidden Door Festival that is. Tickets are available to buy here, some may be available on the day but it might be best to get them bought now to avoid disappointment. Further details can be found on the Sick Kids Sunday Myspace.

Please not that contrary to what the poster above shows Alasdair Roberts has had to pull out, however, Broken Records have stepped in to fill the gap playing an acoustic set. Seriously can an event in Edinburgh go by with them not taking part?!

Lastly, we have Chemikal Undergrounds 15th birthday party at the ABC in Glasgow, which is the closing even for this years Celtic Connections Festival. The line up boasts the cream of the crop when it comes to Chemikal's roster, each act will play a twenty five minute set. It's worth the entry fee alone just to see the Phantom Band in action, plus it will be the first live outing of The Unwinding Hours. I'm really looking forward to it already, if you fancy it then you can find out more details/buy tickets here.

The Lava Experiments return with new EP

Glasgow three-piece Lava Experiments (mind I posted about them a while back) are set to release their new EP, 'Piecing Memories Together (Remixes)' this coming Monday (25th Jan). The EP features remixes of their Blackbody Vol II EP from dan le sac, Pumajaw (ex Loop) and Betamax Warriors.
Initially the EP was going to be a digital only release, but the band have decided that the remixes are too good not be put out in some kind of physical form, so there will be a very limited run of 100 CD's available to buy from their website.
I've embeded all of the songs so you can have a listen and make your own mind up, if it floats your boat then get it bought.

John Wills (Pumajaw/Loop) - A Million Miles From Home

dan le sac - Talentless Hack

To celebrate the release of ‘Piecing Memories Together’, the Lava Experiments are playing at The 13th Note, Friday 29th Jan. Tickets are £5 on the door or £3 in advance from Skiddle.

Brendan Losch
Today's tasty little treat comes from a Chicago based singer-song writer by the name of Brendan Losch, who is currently giving away a shed load of his back material to download over at his Bandcamp. He describes himself as “Low and Slow", if you are looking for a good starting point I'd go with the EP on his Bandcamp.

Recorded in the first half of 2009 in their home state, Dear Companion explores their ties to the place they love and aims to draw attention to the problem of mountaintop removal coal mining and its impact on the people and heritage of central Appalachia. To find out more information on Ben and Daniel go here.

The Morning Benders
American indie popsters, The Morning Benders, have posted a new track from their forthcoming album Big Echo, which was produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear. I caught these guys at festival in San Francisco, on my honeymoon, yes my wife is sound enough to let me drag her to concerts even on the most romantic holiday of our life, what girl. Ones to Watch in 2010 #9 - The Unwinding Hours

The Unwinding Hours debut album is for me and I'm sure many others one of the most hotly-anticipated albums of 2010. Formed from the ashes of Scottish alternative/post-rock rock band, Aerogramme. So far only two songs have appeared on bands MySpace, a demo of a song called 'Solstice', and 'Knut', which you can download below. Both of which sound pretty amazing and distinctively like their previous outfit (no bad thing in my eyes).

Would you care to introduce yourself?

Hello. The Unwinding Hours are Craig B and Iain Cook

How would you describe the music you make?
Rock. (If I describe it anymore I will sound like a pretentious twat. If someone else describes it, it’s ok!)

How did you start out making music?
Over fifteen years ago, I used to travel to West Lothian to visit Iain because he had a Tascam four track recorder. He really knew how to use it well and would record the extremely naïve songs I used to write in my bedroom.

What process goes into the way you write songs?
It hasn’t changed much except Iain now has a studio on the south side of Glasgow that we record in. I usually start the song off on guitar or on the computer and then we both flesh it out and turn it into something much more interesting.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2010?
Our first gig is at the Celtic Connections festival on January the 31st at chemical undergrounds 15th birthday party. We will tour the new album as well at some point as well.

Lastly, the question that’s on everyone’s lips is it possible to blow a balloon up under water?
If I have a question about anything at all, I write it into Google and somewhere at some point someone has asked that question and somewhere at some point, there has been a nerd on hand to answer.

The Unwinding Hours eponymous debut album is due out on the 15th of February through Chemikal Underground. If you fancy cacthing their first ever live outing at the ABC in Glasgow then you can buy tickets for it here.

If you visit this site on a regular basis I'm sure you'll appreciate that I put a lot of effort in to it and as of yet I haven't asked for anything in return. Until now that is, I have been nominated in the Scotblogs Awards and would appreciate it if you took the time out to vote. Ones to Watch in 2010 - #8 Evening Chorus

When I was thinking up my one's to watch in 2010 I must admit that I thought I'd only feature Scottish artists, but there were two bands from outwith our wee nation that I wanted to share with you. Namely, The Incredible Flight of Birdman, and Cardiff based band 'Evening Chorus'.
One of the best things about running this blog is all of the great music recommendations that folk pass on to me. One of which came from the lovely
'Drunk Country' a radio presenter on The Waiting Room, a Cardiff on WOXY.com (a mighty fine radio show which is well worthy of your attention). He got in touch with me a while back to see if I fancied hearing a few songs by Evening Chorus, quite simply because they though they were great and they wanted to spread the word. I concur.
I think the most obvious comparison would have to be Mumford & Sons, as they were one of my favourite artists to emerge last year you can probably appreciate how excited I am about this band. Anyway, I'll pass you over to the band and let them introduce themselves to you. (NB make sure you check out their answer to the balloon question, words quite simply fail me.)

Would you care to introduce yourself?
Hello, we’re Evening Chorus: Gareth, Callum, Rachel and Eugene to be precise. Gareth plays acoustic guitar, Callum plays double bass, Rachel plays violin and Eugene plays banjo, and we all sing.
How would you describe the music you make?
If it doesn’t conjure up images of men with beards and penny whistles with a finger in one ear, then we’d say we’re a folk band. If it does, then we’d probably elaborate and say we play exciting yet thoughtful music, layered with vocal harmonies and interesting instrumentation.

How did you start out making music?
Gareth and Callum had worked together in other bands, having grown up together: Rachel started playing with them in early summer 2009, with Eugene joining to complete the line-up in October, only about a week before the band’s first gig.

What process goes into the way you write songs?
The first songs we had were ones that Gareth and Callum had been working on before we started playing as a four-piece, which helped us explore the kind of sound we wanted to achieve as a band, and to get used to playing together. The more recent songs tend to start as one person’s idea, but soon evolve with the input of the rest of the band.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2010?
We’ve got gigs lined up for the first few months of 2010 in and around Cardiff, but are definitely looking to start broadening our horizons. As well as trying to work on our live performance, we’re hoping to record an E.P ready for around Easter.
Lastly, the question that’s on everyone’s lips is it possible to blow a balloon up under water?
Yes…and here is Gareth proving it
here, here and here
-
Gareth you really did me proud with this one, Peenko

Ones to Watch in 2010 - #7 Midnight Lion

Comprised of ex Drive-By Argument members, Midnight Lion are a synth-pop duo from Glasgow who have been compared to a "21st century version of The Associates"
Having only recently released a few home-recordings they are already generating quite a buzz and were even recently tipped as one of Vodafone Ones to Watch (hey, they nicked my title...)
If there's any justice in the world then these guys will be huge in 2010, I appreciate that's quite a bold statement, but once you've had a listen I doubt you'll disagree.

Would you care to introduce yourself?
I'm Stewart Brock, one half of Midnight Lion.

How would you describe the music you make?
Dramatic, ambitious pop music.

How did you start out making music?
We met at University in 2004 and have been writing together under different guises since then. Midnight Lion has been alive and well since around August 09.

What process goes into the way you write songs?
It really depends. Sometimes one of us will finish a song to the best of our abilities and then hand it over to the other. Sometimes one of us will have a rough idea but won't know where to take it, so we work through it together. Generally music is finished before lyrics and melodies.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2010?
We're hoping to spend some time putting a live show together, with a view to getting out on the road as soon as we can. We also want to continue writing and demoing new tracks.

Lastly, the question that’s on everyone’s lips is it possible to blow a balloon up under water?
I reckon with a large enough unit of pressure you could. It depends how far you are under the water... and the type of balloon.

Ones to Watch in 2010 - #6 The Incredible Flight of Birdman

Some of you might be aware that Planet Sound, the Teletext music page came to a close at the end of last month, and to be honest I'm still pretty gutted about it. For me Planet Sound was part of my daily routine, I'd regularly read it just before going to bed each night. Over the years the PS Editor John Earls introduced me to loads of great bands, including The Twilight Sad, Modest Mouse, Patrick Watson and most recently Telekenisis. Mr Earls always seemed to be spot on with his recommendations, so when he started talking about this incredible new band he'd heard, The Incredible Flight of Birdman, I decided to give them a listen and even posted about them a fair wee while back. Now having recently set up his own record label, Wet Records, John Earls is ready to introduce the wonderful TIFOB to the world.
Seriously these boys are good, I know I have been focusing on only Scottish acts so far, but these guys were just to good not to feature. Now over to Nick Osbourne the Chief Chirpa of TIFOB for an introduction to the band.

Would you care to introduce to yourself?
Yes, we would care, deeply. We are The Incredible Flight of Birdman, which comprises Nick Osbourne (vocals), Rich Yates (guitar), Rob Fisher (drums), and Doug Stuart (bass). We are from Essex, Grimsby, and Cambridge. There was once a prophecy that if such a geographical combination were to manifest, the world would come to an end. This prophecy is false. I think.

How would you describe the music you make?
Roger Moore once said that if music could be described through language alone, there would be no need for music at all. We would all be dancing to rhythmically scrawled adjectives. Actually, I don't think Roger Moore did say that, but it's a sound philosophy. However, I would say that, as a vocalist, I sound a lot like Mario Lanza. People can decide for themselves by going to our MySpace page, or listening to the track on your page.

How did you start out making music?
Rich and I met at Warwick University. We found that we had a shared taste in many things, but particularly music. So we decided that we either had to go out shoplifting at Fopp together or start a band. We opted for the latter. Although, it wasn't until a little while after we left Warwick that we decided to form TIFOB. By then we had quite a few songs floating around, waiting for two more Frankensteins on bass and drums to give them life. We're a little over a year-old as a band now, but, as well as new songs, Rich and I are still introducing songs to the rest of the band that we wrote before TIFOB was born.

Describe the songwriting process?
Rich and I write the songs, so to speak. The band help arrange them. What I mean to say is, we are the most important people in the band, and we could replace the other two quite easily should more talented musicians come along.

What can we expect to see from you in 2010?
Our first single, Where I Can't See You, comes out on January 11th on WET Records. It will start slow, but we are hoping it will make it into the Pancake Day top 1000. After that, another single or two and an EP hopefully. We'd like to travel a little further afield in 2010 than just Cambridge and London, where our gigs have tended to focus. Mind you, in saying that, I think we will be playing on the Isles of Scilly in April. Now how many other bands can say they've got that planned for next year?

Is it possible to blow up a balloon under water?

This sounds like classic Scottish philosophy in the mould of David Hume, Robbie Burns, and Alan Hansen. It depends what kind of balloon you're talking about, I suppose. If it's one of those sausage-shaped party balloons, then definitely no. If it's a hot air balloon, then definitely yes.

Hinterland and Stag & Dagger return for 2010

Two inner city festivals are set to return to Glasgow for a second year, Hinterland on Saturday the 3rd of April and Stag & Dagger on Saturday the 22nd of May
I must admit that I was quite surprised to see both events returning in 2010, Hinterland in particular. It seem that the organisers of Hinterland must have prepared themselves to do deal with any financial losses from last year and that lessons have been learned. Although they seem to be taking a bit of a risk in thinking that the punters hat paid £42 for tickets will be happy to do so again, as due to poor sales last year, tickets ended up being given away for free just days before the event started. Hopefully they problems with pricing have been addressed, as tickets aren't on sale yet I guess we'll have to wait and see. One major issue that I felt hindered the festival was they spread it over two days, a Thursday and a Friday, thankfully they've seen the error of their ways and shifted it to a Saturday. In all seriousness though why they didn't think of this in the first place is really beyond me, but hey what do I know. Although it might not have been a success financially I really did feel that Hinterland was a good idea and that it seemed to work well. Blending an array of local talent with
established artists, it offered you the chance to nip in and out of various venues across Glasgow. My highlights from last year included Zoey Van Goey, Sons & Daughters and a guy called Geordi La Force. Never heard anything about him after that night though.
For further details on the line up and tickets keep you eye on the Hinterland homepage.

Stag & Dagger was for me a far more successful event, probably because the organisers had the advantage of having previously organised the event down in London Town.
It was on a Saturday, the line up was a lot better. Last year we had Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad and The Phantom Band all in one night, so you can imagine how ever excited I was getting that night. Again no details of the line up have been announced, however, early bird tickets are available to buy now for £10, you can buy them here. Keep an eye out for the line up being announced at the Stag and Dagger homepage. Hopefully they'll get a new logo sorted some time soon, as the one above looks like something I could have knocked up on my old BBC Micro (for all you youngsters that's a very very old computer).

Gary Lightbody's Buck-ing Pony

As some of you may already know, Gary Lightbody, lead singer of Snow Patrol is working with a new band called Tired Pony to record a country-tinged album. He's roped in a fine selection of artists to work with him including R.E.M.'s guitarist Peter Buck, Iain Archer and his wife and singer Miriam Kaufman, Belle and Sebastian's drummer Richard Colburn. In a recent interview with Vic Galloway, Lightbody revealed that he had managed to rope in two more members whom he was very excited about, but didn't name them. One of which we now know to be Peter Buck, the other remains a mystery

The meeting of great musical minds is taking place as we speak in the US. Gary Lightbody has revealed that the superstar guest on his R.E.M.’s Peter Buck. Gary recently told
Q magazine that “Peter is one of my all-time heroes, “I admire his versatility, he can play any stringed instrument and more besides. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with! He’s a real innovator, which is great because this is a whole new project.”
Having previously managed to gather a host of Glasgow indie stars to record his Reindeer Section side project, I am quite intrigued to see who the other special guest is going to be. They toured with U2 and Coldplay in recent years, or am I thinking too big? Perhaps some of Granddaddy? They toured with them just before 'Run' broke, so perhaps that's a possibility. Anyone else got any suggestions?

Also, being the busy little bee that he is, once the Tired Pony sessions are completed, Lightbody and Lee will head to LA to record an electronic album under the Listen… Tanks! banner. The last time Lightbody worked this hard we got two Reindeer Section albums and 'Final Straw', am I excited, fuck yes.

Ones to Watch in 2010 #5 - Campfires in Winter

Hand on heart, I won't lie to you, I'm friends with the Campfire boys. So there might seem to be a fair degree of bias in choosing them as one of my acts to watch this year. Personally I couldn't give a monkeys chuff, as I've heard the demos and they are quite frankly amazing.
Well as I have been grooming him and the rest of the 'kids' (as I have affectionately come to call them), have been churning out great songs for a couple of years now. There are plans for a limited release EP in the offing some time soon, and hopefully an album later in the year which I am hoping to be involved with this year promises to be very exciting year ahead.

Would you care to introduce yourself?

I’m Boab from Campfires in Winter and I play guitar and sing. The others - in alphabetical order so as not to dent/massage any egos - are David (drums), Scott (keyboard, guitar and vocals) and Wullie (bass and vocals).

How would you describe the music you make?
Loud noisy stuff that’s quite melodic really. I never know how to describe us. Always sounds arsey. We’re often compared to The Twilight Sad and Mogwai but people always tend to tell us different things about how we sound. Like the lassie who told us we sounded like Death Cab For Cutie a while back. Just naw.

How did you start out making music?
Very slowly. It started as David and me jamming for months and months in school before we decided to ask Wullie for a jam also. Shortly afterwards we asked Scott if he would like to play keyboards. Anyway. we played mainly covers for ages, only writing songs sporadically. Gradually we began writing our own stuff more and phasing out the covers. We would keep writing loads and loads and discard the old stuff and the idea was that eventually we would naturally reach a ‘sound’. I reckon we’re just about getting there now.

What process goes into the way you write songs?
If someone has a song idea we just have a listen in rehearsal, try and come up with our own parts and suggest improvements to others parts etc. Usually lyrics come last, often finished about five or ten minutes before we need them for gigs or recording.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2010?
Things going well in the next few months should result in us having an EP out in spring. Following that there may be a short tour and hopefully an album towards the end of the year. And plenty of gigs in between, I hope.

Lastly, the question that’s on everyone’s lips is it possible to blow a balloon up under water?
I imagine that it would be possible but very difficult. First of all, the individual blowing up this party device would be required to have a considerable lung capacity in order to negate the need for any return to the surface for air. It’s also possible that the pressure of the water would cause difficulty whilst blowing up the balloon. I am no scientist, but I do not believe the water pressure would affect the balloon in any way provided the balloon is being blown up relatively near the surface where pressure is not so great. The main effect it might have is that it will push the balloon towards the surface. Another possible problem is that there may be lobsters within the vicinity trying to burst your balloons with their sharp claws, jealous at the suggestion you may be having a party and ignorant to the fact that you are actually undertaking a scientific experiment. These lobsters can be caught and boiled to be served at the buffet at the party to be held for successful completion of the scientific experiment. An easy way to blow up a balloon underwater is to substitute the balloon for a water balloon and use a balloon pump.

Ones to Watch in 2010 #4 - North Atlantic Oscillation

You might remember me banging on about these guys a while back, if not then now is the time to download yourself a copy of 'Cell Count', one of my favourite songs on 2009. The Edinburgh-based electronic rock group are due to release their debut album this year and thanks to the wonders of the internet I managed to get a few words from the band.

Would you care to introduce yourself?
Hello. I'm Sam from the band North Atlantic Oscillation.

How would you describe the music you make?
Tuneful and unusual, hopefully.

How did you start out making music?
I like noise and patterns. Music is patterns of noise, so it's my dream medium.

What process goes into the way you write songs?
a) I get antsy, fidgety, grumpy, antisocial, insomniac and panicky. b) I write a song. c) I feel relaxed for a while. d) Back to a).

What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2010?
Our debut album Grappling Hooks comes out in late March. We played some gigs with Porcupine Tree in late 2009 which went really well, better than we expected. So we might end up playing with them again in Europe, as well as doing our own headline gigs to promote the album.

Lastly, the question that’s on everyone’s lips is it possible to blow a balloon up under water?
Excellent question, and well done for consulting musicians on matters of basic science. I imagine that it is possible but with less impressive results than blowing it up in the air, since you're displacing water, which is heavier than air at normal atmospheric pressure. Also it probably gets more difficult as you go deeper since there's more weight to blow against. Good luck inflating anything at 2000m below sea level. Piezophiles, tiny animals which live on ocean floors, have a completely different metabolism than the mesophile majority because the intense pressure (over 350 atmospheres) of their environment makes their cell membranes almost imporous.

Ones to Watch in 2010 #3 - Panda Su

I can be pretty stubborn some times, quite often it is to my detriment, no matter how much something is staring me in the face I'll ignore it or even dismiss things off hand. Last April I went to my first ever Homegame, the festival run by Fence Records. I remember seeing the name Panda Su and immediately dismissing the name. Even after continually seeing her badges all over the place and thinking that they looked quite cool and quirky, I still couldn't be bothered to find out more.
Then the wonderful folk over at Glasgow Podcart started mentioning Su, and still I wouldn't listen. I really don't know why or how I managed to let her pass me by. Stubbornness I guess. It wasn't until a couple of months back that I finally got my finger out and gave her myspace a wee listen, it was at this point that I realised what a muppet I'd been. Her voice is quite simply stunning, both live and on record, her EP 'Sticks and Bricks'. Her songs have that special trick of being able to break your heart whilst making you feel unbelievably good.
In a world where we are force fed our new female indie starlets, this years bland offering that folk will buy from Asda being Ellie Goulding (yawn), then here is a real alternative. If you want something truly inspiring to satisfy your ear buds look no further than the wonderful Panda Su.

Would you care to introduce yourself?
An Ailuropoda melanoleuca who writes and performs music under the pseudonym of Panda Su. I've been around for about 14 months and currently reside in a little house by the sea, in the sunny region of Fife.

How would you describe the music you make?
Zoo Pop/Folk/Children's Music

How did you start out making music?
I used to write my own lyrics to songs like Greensleeves and Edelweiss on my Yamaha keyboard when I was about 7 years old. I decided to put up some demo's on Myspace - and the rest is history.

What process goes into the way you write songs?
The music comes first and then the words. I don't like writing about things in an obvious way so I use lots of metaphors and similes to make it interesting. But mainly, to confuse people.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2010?
I've been a bit quiet recently as I've been trying to get some things organised for the coming year. Hopefully, you'll be able to hear my music at some top festivals around the country and there's a new EP and a UK and European tour in the pipeline too.

Lastly, the question that’s on everyone’s lips is it possible to blow a balloon up under water?
Absolutely.
