Hi my name is Rob, I sing and play uke in the Graveyard Band. We also have Gav (trumpets/keys/vox), Gregory (Bass/Vox), Jackson (Guitar) & Fraser (drums).
How would you describe the music you make?
Hard to say, I suppose in my mind it would be Lofi-Folk. I like to think of it as “Happy Songs about Death”.
How did you start out making music?
I started off learning Classical Guitar in my teenage years abd then played with various bands in my home town of Livingston. Eventually I moved to Glasgow to study Sound Engineering and then Music Management and had planned to start a band along the way. This took quite a long time to happen as I got side tracked by becoming a tour manager and spending time on the road with bands like We Are The Physics, Twilight Sad, Radar Bros and so on. All the time I was still writing and recording music though and I learned a lot from watching how other bands do things from a more insider perspective than most.
What process goes into the way you write songs?
Generally I find myself strumming a guitar or uke at 3 in the morning slightly fried on pot & sleep deprivation. Any ideas I strum that are good get recorded onto my phones voice recorder. Later I go through them, find the ideas I like and start to flesh out the ideas in my little bedroom studio and write lyrics for everything. Lyrics take the longest, I have lots of songs that are great in my head but never get finished because I can’t think of the right words to put to them.
What can people expect from your live shows?
Since I put together a live band the songs from the EP have got a bit louder than you will hear on the recordings. I was lucky enough to get a bunch of talented folks on board, my brother Gav and Gregory played in Glasgow electro band Findo Gask. Jackson played in Ray Summers and Fraser in Paper Planes. All bands I really enjoyed listening to and that inspired me to make more of my own music. I prefer to get musicians who can create their own parts and add something to the music so we have changed things a bit from the EP. Also Michael who played viola moved to Belgium so his parts have been replaced with trumpets & keys.
What are you all listening to at the moment?
This year I set up my record player again & am lucky enough to live fairly close to the south sides Oxfam Record Shop so cheap vinyl is the order of the day. I’ve been listening to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Simon & Garfunkel, Lou Reed (Transformer & Coney Island Baby) & Mamas & Papas. Aside from that I love going out to catch bands playing live. Two of my favourite shows this year have been Galoshins EP launch & seeing Jacob Yates & The Pearly Gate Lockpickers at the Old Hairdressers.
What can we expect to see/hear from you in the future?
We have been learning new songs this year and will be debuting 2 of them at our show at Glasgow School of Art on the 28th of February. I think the new stuff will basically be more songs about death & history but bigger and better! We plan to play more shows further afield, release more music and continue in the eternal quest to get more Facebook likes (which is, lets face it what music is all about these days!).
