Fresh Meat Monday - FRANK

Would you care to introduce yourself?

We are FRANK, an indie rock band based in Dunblane.

How would you describe the music you make?

It’s mainly pigeon-holed to indie rock and, on a broader scale, alternative. However, we’re all musically influenced by so many bands and styles so it varies. You’ll get a kind of funk/Foals-y middle section in one song, then jump to a complete grunge wall of noise in the next. We’ll usually start with a song idea with a couple of hooks and then experiment with different sounds around it.

How did you start out making music?

As a band, we started playing together around summer 2010 hoping to be the next Ramones. Over the years we just grew up musically got serious about the band and our new sound (indie rock) around early 2012. Three of us (Lukas, Callum, Innes) just started jams after school until we realised ‘Damn, we need a bass player...’. We then got Iain on board and just developed from there, slowly become more ‘indie’ by the song!

What process goes into the way you write songs?

Either Lukas or Callum write a song and bring it to practice where we dissect it and think of cool things to do with it. The arrangement of the songs is very much a collaborative effort, we all feel comfortable suggesting things to each other whether it be a samba drum breakdown or a slow burner epic.  From doing this we usually get songs finished in one or two practices getting to debut at least two or more new songs at every gig we do which keeps things fresh. Our song writing routine takes a very progressive approach, we are always cutting songs from our set to keep it as fresh and at its standard we possibly can.

What can people expect from your live shows?

Energy. We love playing live, every song is written with the crowd in mind and how they will respond. We’re a lively band and just want to get the crowd moving most of all, our main aim in a live show is to get the crowd to DANCE! It’s mostly about treating the crowd to a tight set, but with something to watch too, we’re performers and so want it to be visually compelling as much as it is aurally.

What are you all listening to at the moment?

We’re all pretty different when it comes to current listenings as we always go through phases. For instance, Lukas is really into the Cribs at the moment, whilst Callum spends his days on Soundcloud scanning through the unknown for unsigned dubstep groups. Half of the band went to see Deftones the other week, listening to Yo La Tengo  and De La Soul on the way. So it’s pretty diverse, we’re all just massive music lovers. In terms of new music there’s so much to hear. Ariel Pink’s new album is brilliant, as is Tango in the Attics last release, an absolute genre-smashing album! Props to Cloud Nothings too who have influenced some of our newer stuff.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in the future?

Hopefully a good few support slots with some more established bands in order to get the name around, and venture out into the cities (Glasgow, Edinburgh etc.) and see where it takes us.Music-wise we’re always writing so we’ll probably get some more demos out soon and possibly a single. We just want to spread the word and establish a decent name for ourselves.
