We've Got It Covered #100

As seems to be the case with most things this week, I am running a little behind with my blog posts, but trust me this weeks cover version post is worth the wait. To celebrate the fact that this is my 100th 'We've Got It Covered' post, I thought it might be fun to ask one of my favourite artists to record something to mark this milestone. Last years, 'Songs To Swim To' album from Monoganon was undoubtedly once of the finest things to come out in 2011, I liked it that much that I even bought a record player purely so I could listen to the album on vinyl. I have been banging on to anyone who will listen to me about just how much I like this album. If you haven't heard it, you can download it for free from the nice folk at Winning Sperm Party.
So seeing as I was such a big fan of the album, I cheekily asked Monoganons', frontman John B McKenna if he might be up for recording a cover for me and I am pretty chuffed to say that he agreed. Rather than just record the one cover though, he took up the challenge and ran with it, recording three covers in all. I am saving one back for now to share with you all later in the year, but for now I can share with you Monoganon's cover of The Stooges 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' and Daniel Johnston's 'Walking The Cow', enjoy!

We've Got It Covered #63

In case you'd forgotten today is a pretty big day for me and this blog, yep it's Ayetunes vs Peenko 4 day. Yes, I know I have been banging about this for ages now, but the day has finally come and tonight at Stereo myself and Jim will be hosting the next our series of blogger battles. As I'm sure you're already aware PAWS have very sadly had to pull out for personal reasons, we're going to miss not having them there, but we reckon we've got such a strong line up that we'll be okay. So it's Mondegreen, Miaoux Miaoux and Adam Stafford, in my eyes that's a fucking belter of a line up, hopefully you'll agree. If not then I dare you to come down for the night, as I am pretty sure you'll soon change your mind.
If you missed it at the start of the week Adam's new album Build A Harbour Immediately, came out on Monday there. It's one of the finest album's I have heard all year, so to be able to put on his album launch feels like quite an honour for the pair of us. Doors tonight will be about 7pm with Mondegreen coming on shortly after, so if you could make sure you're down nice and early that'd be grand.
We're also going to be having a wee after party upstairs after the gig, so if you fancy kicking about for more drinks, hugs, shite chat and the opportunity to watch our attempts at DJing then you're more than welcome to kick about. Be warned though Adam has been threatening to spin rockabilly tunes.
Anyway this weeks cover comes from the great man, last year he released an album of covers called Music in The Mirabel, which featured covers of folk like the Twilight Sad and Sparks. He also did this wee version of Daniel Johnston's Blue Clouds, which I am quite partial too. Hope you like it and more importantly hopefully I'll see a few of your beautiful faces in Stereo tonight.

We've Got It Covered #61

It's always nice to come home to find a surprise package waiting for you, so last week when I came home after a shitty day at work, my day was made dramatically better by the fact that one of my favourite Scottish bands, we're only afraid of NYC, had sent me a CD of their forthcoming new singles. Sticking with their ethos of giving their music away for free, the boys new material is sounding pretty great. Having disappeared off the radar a little bit, the boys have been working away behind the scenes and if these new sons are anything to go by then they've clearly developed their sound. The band are playing at King Tuts in Glasgow on the 28th of August as part of the series of Rock n Roll Damnation gigs, with the first of their free singles going live the week before (it will be in Friday Freebies). For now though you can content yourself with this wee cover that they did of Daniel Johnston's 'True Love Will Find You In The End'...

We've Got It Covered #41

It's Saturday morning and by the time that this post goes live, myself and Nic will be off to the flicks for our first ever baby cinema experience. In my head this will be a tortuous couple of hours spent listening to other peoples children scream their heads off.
Talking of screaming, last night PAWS launched their new EP at the Captains Rest with from what I have heard was a pretty amazing live show. Sadly I couldn't make it along for the main event, I did however, manage to catch the band playing their first and possibly last ever acoustic show as they played an instore at Love Music. This was my first experience of catching the band live and even though I didn't get the full effect of the PAWS live show, I was mightily impressed. Their college slacker rock sound took me back to my youth, which is quite a while ago now. In fact their lyrics reminded me a lot of some early Daniel Johnston stuff, so it makes sense that they'd choose to cover the big man. So here it is, this weeks cover is the amazing PAWS covering Daniel Johnston, happy fucking days.

We've Got It Covered #27

Last night I did something which I haven't done for ages, which was take an evening off from dealing with emails, blogging and the Internet in general. After the craziness of the past few weeks it felt quite refreshing to be able to stuff my face with Chinese and to veg on the couch. I guess what I am trying to say in a roundabout way is that I haven't replied to a message you've sent me, it's not cause I don't love you. It's just cause I have a bit of a backlog of stuff to get through. Anyway, on with this weeks cover which comes from Meursault and their take on Daniel Johnston's 'Hey Joe'. Recorded as part of a session that they did for Vic Galloway back in May, I think this cover fits perfectly with this time of year in Scotland, enjoy....

Daniel Johnston & Friends - Live at the Glasgow Fruitmarket (23/07/08)

Back last July, Daniel Johnston played Glasgow for the first time since his headlining set at Indian Summer, what a night it was too. Backed by a band which included an array of indie royalty including Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, Scout Niblett, James McNew of Yo La Tengo, Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub and Jad Fair of Half Japanese. Great gig it was too, I have just come across a live recording of the evening, so I thought it'd be nice to share

The Devil, Yorkston and Crowly....

James Yorkston and Adrian Crowly are planning to do a set of Daniel Johnston songs at this years Homegame, plus they're also record a mini album of these songs for sale at this years festival.
