Win Tickets for The Electric Frog, Glasgow - Featuring Mogwai, Errors, Wild Beasts...

Since the demise of Tryptich, Glasgow has been left somewhat devoid of in-the-city events, however, with the addition of The Electric Frog this looks set be rectified. The event which is being put on by a collaboration of promoters, which include Liquid Events, SWG3, Slam Events/Pressure and Synergy Concerts, sees a range of DJs and artists being brought together for quite an eclectic wee bill. The event which takes places on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th, features a full day of programmed live performances on the Sunday with the Saturday having more of a DJ/Electronic aspect. The event which was originally scheduled for April of this year, but was pushed back now boasts a much stronger line of bands which includes Mogwai, Wild Beasts, The Fall and Errors amongst others.

To be in with a chance to win a pair of tickets for the event all you have to do is answer this very easy question:

What is the name of the lead singer of The Fall?

Send your answers to me at peenkoblog@gmail.com with 'The Electric Frog' in the subject line. The winner will be chosen completely at random, with the competition closing next Saturday (3rd Sept).

Tickets for the event are £50 for the weekend, or £27.50 for a day ticket and you can buy them from the following stores: Tickets Scotland, Ticket Web, Cafe Rio - Hyndland Street (with no booking fee), Ripping Records in Edinburgh and Grouchos in Dundee.

Friday Freebies

As so many folk complained a couple of weeks back when I had to miss a week of Freebies, I am typing this up on a Wednesday which is a bit unorthodox for me as it means I'll probably miss a tonne of good stuff out. Fear not though as that wee annoying bunny eared fecker will duly point them out. I do have good reason to have an excuse as we put on the latest Peenko session last night, which we will hopefully be bringing to you shortly. Anyway, lets get this show on the road and get on with this week freebies.

Monoganon
This could quite possibly be the greatest freebie I have ever posted, I shit you not. Yes, in the past I've posted links to some pretty amazing free EPs and singles, but this is a while album and it's fucking amazing. The album is called 'Song's To Swim To' and it is already one my favourite albums of 2011, I still can't quite fathom that they're giving it away for free.

FOUND
Alas all good things must come to an end, by my calculations this weeks FOUND freebie will be our last a their amazing new album 'factorycraft' is due on Monday. They'll also be celebrating the release with a gig at the Captains Rest on the same day. Personally I can't wait, hopefully I'll see a few of your beautiful faces there too. As for the freebie, you'll find it here, just mind and buy the album you won't regret it.

Robin Pecknold
Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes fame recorded three acoustic songs a couple weeks ago in LA with his friend Noah and he was kind enough to share them with us all. One is a duet with Ed Droste from Grizzly Bear, one is just a new solo jam, and the last one is a cover.

Ghost Pants
I don't really hide my liking of Ghost Pants, for those of you who haven't been paying attention the band originally started as the solo project of Dananananaykroyd drummer Paul Carlin. They're now a four piece and I was even lucky enough to have them as my first guinea pigs when we had our first ever live Peenko sessions back last year. You can watch the videos and download the recordings at the top left hand-side of the screen there. Having given away numerous EPs and singles, they're now offering their new release 'Error b/w Hit' as a pay what you want scenario. So if you're conscience can take it you can download it for free here.

Song of Return

Having risen from the ashes of Union of Knives, Craig Grant and his boys have regrouped and are making something of triumphant return under the guise of Song of Return. They apparently played a storming set at Tuts last Friday, a welcome return indeed, plus if you sign up to their mailing list they'll send you a couple of free MP3s.

Admiral Fallow
Their amazing debut album, 'Boots Met My Face', is set for a re-release at the end of this month in a plush new sleeve, if you haven't already got a copy then get that sorted. The updated version of the album includes new song 'The Sad Clown Cast', to make up for all of those folk that have already bought the album they've made the song free to download.

Trapped In Kansas
Ayr's finest, Trapped In Kansas have posted up three acoustic version of their songs for free download on their Soundcloud page. Sounding good boys, sounding very very good.

Battle for 2nd Place
The Glasgow four piece recently recorded an acoustic version of their song 'Damage that you've Done' for Balcony TV in Dublin. To mark the performance the band have made this song and current single 'Say it ain't So' available for free download from their website. While you're at it, if you sign up to their mailing list they'll send you a download link for their song 'Sense of Self.

Wild Beasts
If you go and click 'like' on Facebook, Wild Beasts will give you a free download of their new song 'Albatross,' the first single from their forthcoming album 'Smother'.

Okkervil River
Stereogum have a wee exclusive free download of new Okkervil River song 'Wake and Be Fine', just follow the link.

Datavus
Originally from Ontario, Canada, Datavus frontman Danen Francis Sloan relocated to Edinburgh and formed this exciting new indie-folk outfit. Their single 'All Stands Still' is free to download on their Bandcamp, if this song is an indication of what's to come then they're certainly going to be ones to watch out for.

The Strangers Almanac
I must admit that since The View broke through to the mainstream, that I have been naive enough to tar all bands from Dundee with same brush. Only now do I feel realise the error of my ways, recently we have had an abundance of talent to emerge from the City of Discovery, including Olive Grove's very own Esperi, the rock-tastic Pensioner and now we have another wee gem in the form of The Strangers Almanac. Their single 'Whale Watching For Beginners' is a joyous little number, that harks back to the 60s & 70s with it's chilled out vibe, lovely stuff.

Art Brut
You can download new Art Brut song, Unprofessional Wrestling, here in exchange for an email address, a Facebook 'like' or your soul.

Young and Lost Club
There are an array of free downloads up for grabs on Young and Lost Club's website, including tracks from ExLovers, Young The Giant Noah & The Whale and Gold Fields.

Three Trapped Tigers
The band are giving away a track taken from their forthcoming album 'Route One Or Die'. Get 'Cramm' here in exchange for your email address.

Friday Freebies

Bronto Skylift
One of themost ferosious live bands I have ever seen and also the newest members to join the Scots Way-Hay club. If you weren't paying attention on Wednesday, then to make sure you make sure you use this opporuntity to check this noisey duo out. You can download yourself their track 'Wolf' as taken from their debut album' The White Crow', for free on their Bandcamp page.

Arran Arctic

London based musician Beatoven has just remixed his latest single, 'The Door', which is equal parts glitchy electronica and bone rattling bass. The original single is still up for grabs as well, until next month, when both it and the remix will be replaced by another brand new single. Keep those eyes peeled kids.

We Are Trees
Boy this is confusing, I first came across this link on Listen Before You Buy (great blog btw), I thought I knew who this band were. Turned out there's two 'We Are Trees', I had presumed this was from the Welsh band, turned out that it was actually a Virginia Beach outfit. I think I prefer this combo over their Celtic namesakes. Anyway, the point that I am struggling to get to, is that they have an EP called Boyfriend up for free on their Bandcamp.

Dr Martens
The footwear making company is celebrating it's 50th birthday this year, to celebrate they have drafted in a whole load of musicians to do some covers for them, including The Cinematic Orchestra taking on Jeff Buckley and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's take on the Pogues classic 'Dirty Old Town'. Check out what they have on offer here.

Mitchell Museum

Those crazy kids, they've only gone and posted a free mixtape up for your listening pleasure, it's called 'Giant Robot Mix', there's some remixes of stuff by Animal Collective and Modest Mouse (I think), whatever is on there it's all good.

Aberfeldy
The twee pop starlets are back after what seems like an age away, they have a new album, 'Somewhere To Jump From' coming out on the 23rd of August. As a taster of what to expect the fabulous 405 website has posted a free download of 'In Denial' from the album. It's a welcome return from a band I had kind of thought we had seen the last of, I can't wait to hear the album in full. The band also embark on a tour of Scotland in October, check their Myspace for more details.

Badly Drawn Boy
Will he ever be able to find relive those heady days of his debut album, I doubt it, but he still does seem to be able to knock out some catchy wee tunes. His forthcoming album 'It's What I'm Thinking Part One: Photographing Snowflakes', an easy one to remember, is out in October. As a taster of what to expect he's put up a free MP3 of new demo called 'In Safe Hands', all you have to do is sign up to his mailing list.

The Japanese War Effort
Matthew 'Song By Toad' described them as "o
ne of the best bands in Scotland", now that's quite a bold statement. You can check out if he's right by downloading their free EP 'Surrender to Summer' on their Bandcamp.

Wild Beasts
They are up for this years Mercury Prize, to be honest with you they don't do much for me, but then again what do I know. If you are a fan, or your just a little curious then you might interested to learn that if you click on the link at the end of this ramble, then you can download the new Wild Beasts EP 'We Still Got The Taste Dancin' On Our Tongues', be quick though as it's only up for one week.

Domino
The record label have posted up a free compilation featuring Steve Mason, Owen Pallett, The Fall and Dirty Porjectors among others, just over to Amazon and get downloading.

Inachus
The second release by multi instrumentalist Rob Honey, otherwise known as Inachus is up for free download. He has taken his influences from artists such as Clint Mansell, Mike Patton, Imogen Heap and Curtis Mayfield and blended it to create a very atmospheric and experimental sound.

Azure Ray
It's been a long long time since I have heard anything from this lot, in fact I can remember buying their album 'Hold On Love' quite a few years ago based purely on the basis that Sons & Daughters were supporting them. They sound nothing like S&D's, but I still really liked the album, so it was a nice surprise this week when Stereogum posted a new song, 'Don't Leave My Mind' which is from their new album due out next month.

Teengirl Fantasy

Not the easiest band to search for without having to explain yourself to your wife, they're a Brooklyn duo (seriously do all bands from there automatically become buzz bands?!). They play dreamy synth-rock apparently, and hipster central Pitchfork have a free download of their song 'Cheaters' up for grabs.

Nevada Base
I am pretty sure I posted a freebie from these guys just a week or so ago, but then again my memory is shot, so what do I know. Basically they have posted their song 'Feel That Way' up for nothing, it's in WAV format so it might take a wee bit longer to download.

Best Coast
They seem to be the buzz band of this week, or at least they seem to be every where I go. I've still to listen to any of the songs, but going by everyone else's reaction they are defo ones to be watching. Personally I have spent most of this week getting far too over excited about 'The Suburbs', what an album. Aye so back to the point, head over to RCRD LBL for some free Best Coast stuff.

Silver Columns
The no longer mysterious duo are releasing their next single in September, 'Always On', and it's backed by a Caribou remix of the track which you can download here.

Sarah Masen
The folk singer songwriter has posted her song 'A History of Lights and Shadows' up for free download, in order to get it you have to tweet, email or Facebook it though.

Sara Lowes
A free download of her song ‘Caught In A Wonder' taken from her third EP is up for grabs over on her homepage.

Thrush/Divorce
The Winning Sperm Party have posted a split release featuring Thrush and Divorce, you can download yourself a copy here.

Kowalskiy's Komplimentary Korner

Callme Ishmael
Our good friend the 'Doc' ran a wee feature on these guys earlier in the week, check it here. Then he was good enough to share this little nugget of knowledge with us, two of their songs 'The Fire In Side' and 'The Beast That Screamed At The Heart Of The World' are both up for free download here.

The Radical Dads
Not being content with just one freebie this week, Kowalskiy has decided to bless us with yet another freebie. This one is 3 tracks from Robbie from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's new band, The Radical Dads. Just scroll down and submit your email address and they'll send you some tunes.

While I think about it seriously these are their big tips? The Soft Pack who got tipped last year, the XX who already have an album out and Final Fantasy, an already well established artist, I suppose I shouldn't grumble as they're giving away freebies, but seriously a bit more effort could have been made.

Moustache of Insanity
The pop duo are giving away their new EP, 'Postcards to Strangers' for free here.

4AD
Another record label giving away some tracks, this it's the legendary indie label, 4AD, who are giving away a Sampler featuring Atlas Sound, The Big Pink, Camera Obscura, Deerhunter, The Mountain Goats, Tune-Yards, M.Ward, Anni Rossi, Future of the Left, The National, St Vincent & Broken Records.
