Friday Freebies
Martin John Henry
The ex-De Rosa front man has been working away on his first solo album since the split of his aforementioned band. As a wee taster he is giving away a free copy of his cover of the Beatles, 'Because', all you have to do is click the link.

The Ayrshire rock sprites have posted covers of Darien Venture and Calvin Harris up on their Bandcamp page for free. Mon the 'Pumped in Venice'!
The Dirty Cuts
For those of you paying attention I featured these guys on Monday in the Fresh Meat feature, if you liked what you heard or you weren't paying attention then now's your chance to do some catching up as Ed from 17 Seconds has sent me over a wee link of a remix by Dino Bardot of their song 'Yummy Mummy'. He also sent me a link for a free download of the b-side to the first single '2 page Spread', it's called 'Lips', and all you have to do is click here. What a sweety that Ed is, sadly I didn't get to say hi to him at the bloggers DJ night. Probably for the best that night as I might have scared him with my hugs/kisses.
Oh and I can't be the only one the keeps wanting to add an 'n' to the band name, right?

Ghost Pants, aka Paul Carlin from Dananananannanananananananananananananannananannaaykroyd's, is giving away his Analogue Hearts EP for free on his Bandcamp. Ch-ch-check it.
Song of Return
You might remember them as Union of Knives, we'll things have all been a bit up in the air lately. Still it's good to have them back, there has been a bit of change in personnel but the tunes are still mighty fine. If you sign up to their mailing list they'll send you two MP3's, cracking deal in my eyes.

Another member of the Fresh Meat club giving away stuff this week is Alastair J Chivers, aka Deathpodal. He recorded a new song at one his friends flat warming parties which he's decided to share with us all. It's called 'Flat Squash' and it's free to download on his Soundcloud page.

Our friends over at Sonic Reverie Records have posted a free download from Shrewsbury based Michael Ashford, if you like your ambinet piano based music then this is for you.
Invisible Elephant
As if one freebie wasn't enough, the Sonic boys and girls have also put up a free download of the new Invisible Elephant EP, 'The Lights Go Out'. If you like bands like Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, then this should defo float your boat.

The lo-fi electronica artist has songs about Queens Park and Albert Avenue (a street on which I once lived) has a posted his new 'Glasgow EP' up for free download.

Jose Gonsalez, mind him? aye the guy that had the song on that advert with all the bouncy balls/cover of the Knife's 'Heartbeats'. Wondered what he's been up to lately? Probably not, but I am going to give you a wee update. He's been off recording with his old band Junip, there should be an EP in the offing sometime soon. As a taster, "Rope and Summit" from it is being given away for on the bands homepage.

Mind those cheeky scousers, they had a fair few catchy numbers, then they kind of disappeared up their own arses/were no longer deemed fashionable (you decide). In their monthly(?) email Chemikal Underground send you a wee link to some freebies that they've posted, if you haven't already signed up then I suggest you get that sorted straight away. The latest freebie on offer is a download from the Unwinding Hours tour EP which they have a few copies left for sale in the Chemikal shop. An acoustic version of their song 'Traces' is up for free download, along with a whole host of cracking tunes, get stuck in here.

Yusuf Azak
You can catch Aberdeen-born artist Yusuf Azak supporting Merursault in a few weeks at thei album launch. If you fancy having a wee listen to what he sounds like then you might be pleased to learn that he has put his two self-released two EPs, "Gazelle" and "Light Procession", to download for free on his homepage. Kudos goes out to David Kowalskiy for this tip.

You might remember that I featured Ryan J Gallagher, aka Pink Pills in a previous Friday Freebies, well now the Edinburgher low-fi pop troubador is back with with a free album, 'Concrete Heartbeat'. You can download the album for free here in MP3 and here using FLAC.

It used to be just kids at gigs that used to make me feel old, now I have the pesky buggers making me feel fucking ancient. readysetgo is a 14 year old music producer/composer, yes you read that right. He's from Aberdeenshire and he's one talented wee bugger. His album,
"Who the hell needs cover art anyways?" is available to download for free here. If you like your electronica check it out, be prepared to feel old as fuck though.

Anyway, they have a new single, 'Cavalier' coming out on April 19th through Moshi Moshi. In anticipation of its release the NME have put a remix of the song by Time And Space Machine aka Richard Norris from Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve, up for free download.

Matthew from Song By Toad posted about this on Wednesday, sounded not bad, plus it's free. We like free things round here. If you like your shoegaze, then this five track demo, 'Yonder' might be right up your proverbial street.

Ones to Watch in 2010 #1 Silver Columns
So here we go, it's time for my tips for 2010 and what a belter we have to kick things off, none other than the mysterious beings known as Silver Columns.
Haunting disco pop (now that's something I never thought I'd be blogging about!) but I'm completely hooked on this band. Imagine Jimmy Somerville being horse whipped by the Hot Chip boys and you're half way there. If that doesn't sound good to you then why not trust this lastfm comment "he sounds like the old pedo from family guy! omg. good music". Then again you could just download their debut single 'Browbeaten' below.
Their identity may well be a closely guarded secret, but thankfully through the medium of the web, one of the mysterious Silver Column beings took the time out to answer a few questions for me, here's what he/she had to say.....
Would you care to introduce yourself?
Hello. I are Silver Columns.
How would you describe the music you make?
I would describe it as 'effervescent' and 'sparkling'. That doesn't necessarily mean 'gay'.
How did you start out making music?
Turning on the computer.
What process goes into the way you write songs?
Turning on the computer. Followed by putting on the kettle. And the rest is magic.
What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2010?
Our third single will be out in a few months. And then an album will be out not long after that. And then some live shows. We're contemplating doing a T-Shirt. And an effervescent and sparkling energy drink, that comes with a thick spongey pink straw.
Lastly, the question that’s on everyone’s lips is it possible to blow a balloon up under water?
Yes, it is possible. Although it's a lot more difficult if you're in a jacuzzi. Or maybe it's easier. I'll try it, and will let you know.

Friday Freebies
Silver Columns
I am not sure if it is still hush as to who Silver Columns actually, in case it is let's just say that they're two well known faces from Fence Collective. More importantly what you need to know is that they sound amazing, imagine Jimmy Somerville fronting Hot Chip and you're half way there. Their debut single, 'Brow Beaten' is free to download over at the NME, while you can grab a copy of their remix of Peter, Bjorn & John's 'It Don't Move Me' from their website.
Macabre Scene
I know I mentioned these guys earlier in the week, but what I didn't mention was that they are currently giving away two newly recorded songs Pride of Lions and We Eat Light
for free. If you like your post punk then I strongly recommend you check these guys out, to be honest this music isn't really my cup of tea, but there's something about Macarbe Scene that just works for me, I have been hammering their songs a fair bit this week, I hope you end up doing the same. Also, while you are at it, check out their cover of The Smiths 'Last night I dreamt somebody loved me' recorded by the lovely Glasgow Podcarters, cracking stuff.
The Unwinding Hours
From the ashes of Aerogramme comes the Unwinding Hours, and if the songs posted on their myspace are anything to go by then their debut album due for release next year will be an absolute belter. If you don't believe me then head over to The Popcop as he's got an exclusive free download of 'Knut', I strongly urge you to check it out.
Beach House
The American dream pop duo are giving away single 'Norway' from their forthcoming album 'Teen Dream' and all you have to do is go to their homepage.
Julia & the Doogans
If you like your music to be soothing,with a touch of twee 'ness then Julia & the Doogans may well be your 'new favourite band'. Unfortunately though you'll have to wait till next year until you they will actually release anything, however, if you sign up to their mailing list thenyou should receive some free stuff in your mailbox this weekend.
Adam Stafford
A late addition to this weeks Friday Freebies comes from Adam Stafford from Y'All is Fantasy Island, he is giving away his official debut solo album Awnings for free here.
