We've Got It Covered #33

January really is a shit month, at the turn of the year I was determined to 'keep my chin up' and try and be positive about things. Things seemed to be going pretty well, that was until I had to go back to work and I was soon back to being a miserable fucker. One of the few things that makes this month of misery that little bit more bearable is the fabulous Celtic Connections Festival. It always amazes me the number of amazing line up's the organisers pull together, the two that are exciting me most are BMX Bandits with Randolph's Leap at Oran Mor(for pretty obvious reasons), and the Burns Unit and Broken Records at the Old Fruitmarket. The Burns Unit gig at last years Celtic Connections was pretty damn special, so I am looking forward to seeing them again. Also, I haven't been to a gig at the Fruitmarket in ages, for such a beautiful venue I always feel that it doesn't get used often enough. Having said all of that, the thing that I am most looking forward to, is seeing Broken Records live again. It's been a good while since I last caught them in the flesh, so I am pretty intrigued to see them on a larger stage. In anticipation of next Sundays gig I thought it would be pretty appropriate to post this cover that they recorded of the Velvet Underground's 'Venus in Furs'. Originally recorded as part of a session they did for Vic Galloway back in June of 2009, in my opinion the cover gives the song a nice big Scottish kick up the arse.

The Scottish Blogger and Music Sites Award (The Scottish BAMS) 2010

It's that time of year again where it seems as if every other day there's another album of the year list being announced. Well kids, here's the list you've all forgotten about, it's the return of the BAMS. For those of you who don't already know, the Scottish BAMS Award was a wee idea I devised last year to poll all of the bloggers and music sites that I could find, to find the 'definitive' album of the year. Last year I had around 30 entrants take part, this year I have nearly doubled that total with almost 60 entrants submitting their lists. Here's a roll call of all of the different sites that took part in this years vote...

A fine array of sites if ever I saw one, almost as impressive as the list of albums below. In 2009, things went right down to the wire with the Phantom Band pipping Animal Collective at the last. This year we had a clear winner, which I am sure will surprise few. The Scottish Bloggers and Music Sites album of the year is none other than The National with High Violet. A deserved winner I am sure you'll agree.

Having pestered the bands PR and management, I managed to get word to the band that they had been voted as this years BAMS. They're men of few words, but here's what they had to say

Mondegreen

Marthas & Arthurs
The first band to take me up on my newly embeded link to email me any Freebie suggestions, and a wee cracker it is too. They're partly Scottish and they make some gorgeous wee tunes, a fine start if ever I had one. You can download their new EP, 'Apes in Aeroplanes' for free on their Bandcamp page.

Broken Records
The Edinburgh outift have been hidden away writing their second album, 'Let Me Come Home' which is due out on the 25th of October. Recorded in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan, plus guest vocals by Jill O'Sullivan from Sparrow and the Workshop, the album is highly anticipated by many of us Scottish bloggers, as a taster of what to expect you can download, 'A Leaving Song' by signing up to their mailing list.

Conquering Animal Sound
The good folk over at Gerry Loves have just posted up Meaursault's remix of 'Giant' by Conquering Animal Sound up for free download. I'm not normally a fan of remixes, but I think this is rather nifty, get downloading here.

Gold Panda
The experimental instrumental hip hop type has announced that he will release his debut album, 'Lucky Shiner', in October, preceded by a single, 'Snow & Taxis'. However you can already download 'Snow & Taxis' from www.luckyshiner.com just now, which makes feck all sense to me, but what do I know.

Sub Pop
I'm not sure if I have posted this before, mainly because there are so many free compilations up on Amazon these days, even if I have this is worth repeating. There are a load of free tracks up fro grabs from the likes of Wolf Parade, Avi Buffalo, Nirvana and The Shins. Download it here.

Kowalskiy's Komplimentary Korner

Broken Records announce Scottish Tour & EP Re-release

Broken Records are set to digitally release their 'Out On The Water' EP on the 2nd of November, with a tour planned to support it's release. Previously available only at gigs or from the band directly, the EP is definitely worth downloading, I actually prefer it to the album, but hey that's just my opinion, and you know how much that counts for!

Help us celebrate a year of The Mill

How time flies. It’s been a whole year since The Mill first opened its doors, and to celebrate this milestone we’re welcoming back your favourite bands. But that’s not the half of it. We’ve also offered them the chance to bring along the bands that they believe are currently the best in emerging music, for what promises to be a couple of nights to remember. What’s more, we’ll be recording a live CD of the evening so everyone attending the events can relive the magic of the night again and again.

A year of The Mill Glasgow - 27th August’09

First up to kick-start the celebrations is The Mill Glasgow on August 27th. We’re particularly excited to play host to the ridiculously talented We Were Promised Jetpacks, fresh from releasing their critically acclaimed debut album ‘These Four Walls’. They’re recommending the raw rifts of Some Young Pedro - a fine choice we’re sure you’ll agree. Also returning are the great marauders of the festival circuit, Broken Records whose unique debut album ‘Until the earth begins to part’ is out now. They’ll be introducing the eclectic three-piece act the Sparrow and The Workshop to add some softer notes to the feel.
