A Face For Radio: Video-rama (Part 3)

Some of you might have noticed a distinct lack of a We've Got It Covered post on Saturday, as I am sure that most of you will already know I was up at T in the Park with Randolph's Leap. Fuck me that was a trek and half, I ended up getting our van well and truly stuck in the mud, which in turn ended up with me joining the AA in order for them tow us out. Normally at festivals I piss my money away on over-priced beer and rank rotten burgers, signing up for breakdown cover wasn't something that I ever imagined doing in a rainy field in Balado. Rather than bore you with how muddy it was, here's a video of Randolph's Leap who kicked things off on the T Break stage.

The good folk from Detour launched the second episode of their new TV show last week. This months episode features live footage from Midnight Lion, Vukovi and Honeyblood. A live session from Hector Bizerk's Louie and Stanley Odd's MC Solareye, an interview with Twin Atlantic's Sam Mctrus. Plus a 'blink and you'll miss it' cameo from my good self, which I pray to go my mother never has to witness!

Mind how I mentioned that Zed Penguin had a cracking new single out, well here's a cracking wee video to go with it!

I haven't mentioned me for all of two seconds, so I might as well do so again. If you check out this15 minute "Propaganda edition" of the Glasgow Flower Show mini documentary, you can catch me rambling pish for a few minutes. There are some good bits in there that make it worthwhile. You might want skip my bits though, or at least look away from the screen until I am gone. And cover your ears for that matter.

Last but not least here's a wee video of Campfires in Winter playing on the roof of a pub in Inverness. As you do. If you are out and about tomorrow night then you can catch the boys playing live at the Art School in Glasgow with Vasa and Hot Jupiter.

Meursault – Something For The Weakened

With gritted teeth I hovered my cursor over the play button, prepared for an aural onslaught similar to that of Meursault's previous effort. However, the production here is far superior: warm and clear, yet still lofi enough to be Meursault. The glorious swells of Hole and the lilting sway of Settling are particularly nice moments on an album full of them. Superb.

Zed Penguin – Heathens (single)

This took a few listens to get my head round but now I love it. There's a swirling, dreamy mass of sound (see My Bloody Valentine or The Jesus and Mary Chain) and a vocal delivery straight out of New York in the late 70s. The cool, so-laid-back-it's-lying-down bassline stoats along just pure no' gie'in a fuck about anything. A fantastic track.

The Winter Tradition - Gradients

As I said when I reviewed their single San Diego, this is not normally the type of thing I'd be into. However, The Winter Tradition's brand of guitar pop is done very well indeed, melodic yet always forceful. The highlights here are the sprawling Tides And Telegrams, and the huge Nightscape, which is at times reminiscint of The Remote Part era Idlewild.

Jo Schornikow
I'll warn you now, I am going to be mentioning  Jo Schornikow from the Shivers a lot over the next month or so. In case you somehow missed the memo, she's going to be touring the UK next month with Scott Rudd, and I'm putting on her Glasgow date featuring a bill which will also include Mitchell Museum. In case you haven't already heard any of Jo's music, then you're in luck as there is a free download of her song 'Bird's Nest' up for grabs on SoundCloud. I do like to think that I know a fair bit about up and coming Scottish bands, but I have to hold my hands up and admit that I had only heard of one of the six bands that appear on Kowalskiy's latest free EP. Not that I am complaining as once again the doc has unearthed some cracking wee tunes. If you fancy checking out what M A D I S O N, Naked Strangers, Plurals (the stand out band for me - nice find Mr Kowalskiy!), Saint Max, Scary Shapes and Thank You So Nice sound like, then get downloading here.





GUMS!
Made up of members of Orphans, Collar Up and The Plimptons, Glasgow super group GUMS! of course. The band have come together to release a free one off EP called "A Glasgow Summer", taking their infleunces from the likes of Tom Waits, Arab Strap and The Buzzcocks, this a cracking wee release, that's more than worthy of your attention on a Friday night.




ZED PENGUIN
If you like your music to be loud and scuzzy, then Edinburgh's ZED PENGUIN might well be your cup of tea. Their new single 'Heathens' is free download from their Bandcamp page now.








Sean Armstrong
Former Fresh Meat starlet Sean Armstrong is one prolific young fella, every other week he seems to be cropping up with something new. This week he's stuck up two new track on his SoundCloud page, both of which are free to download.






James Mackenzie
Invernesian singer-songwriter, James Mackenzie has posted up a free download of a demo of his song, Comfortable. Stream it below, if you like it then you can download it from his Bandcamp page.
