Presenting: The Peenko Sessions #8 - Randolph's Leap

I know this should have been up ages ago, but I had a wee problem with Firefox crashing on me last week, which meant that I lost this wee introduction piece. It was a cracking wee intro too, sadly I have gone back to my old self and decided and am going to ramble pish. Filmed and recorded a few weeks back at the Hidden Lane Tea Rooms, the session was one of the hottest gigs I have been to this year and that includes seeing Dananananaykroyd on hot summers night in a venue was packed to the rafters. Thanks to Kirsty who runs the cafe it was also the sweetest smelling gig of the year, unless of course you were standing next to me, as her baking made the place smell awesome. If you watch the video below you will get to see me making my live debut as I play one note for a whole song and I even got accused of ballsing that up. Another highlight of the evening was just before the end of Randolph's Leaps set when Sean who was doing all of the sound/recording, had to move his car as he was blocking someone in. This in turn lead to Adam Leap writing his future smash hit single 'Sean Don't Move Your Car Too Far', right there on the spot, it amused the fuck out of me at least. Anyway, here it is in all if it's glory the eighth Peenko Session featuring Randolph's Leap...

You can view all the videos for this session on my YouTube page.

Once again thanks to Sean from LUGS for filming and recording all of this and Kirsty from the Hidden Lane Tea Rooms for letting us take over her awesome wee venue.

Presenting: The Peenko Sessions #7 - I Build Collapsible Mountains

I said earlier in the week that I'd have the next Peenko Session up and being a man of my word here we have it, it's I Build Collapsible Mountains recorded live at the Hidden Lane Tea Rooms. Since releasing his debut EP, 'A Month Of Lost Memories', the one and only release on Peenko Records, Luke Joyce (aka IBCM) has moved onto much bigger things having been signed up to an American Record label, making festival appearances and he's just been lined up to play with Scott from Frightened Rabbit later in the year. It's an exciting time for Team IBCM, then again all of that wouldn't have come about if he wasn't as talented as he is. Having heard some of his new material, it's amazing to see how he's developed as a songwriter and I loved his first EP.
So a few weeks back we had him down at the cafe to record a session for us, it was possibly the sweatiest, yet sweet smelling gig I have ever been to and Luke was fucking awesome. You don't have to take my word for it as you can stream, download and watch the session below...

Track Listing
1. Trail Song
2. Rails
3. History Making
4. Jump the Blue / Where We Go Tomorrow
5. Spectator and the Act
6. Burn

A special thank you goes out to Sean from LUGS for filming and recording all of this, to Boab for his camera work skills, Kirsty for letting us take over her awesome cafe and to everyone who came along and made the evening as special as it was.

Presenting: The Peenko Sessions #6 - Daniel G. Harmann

A couple of weeks back we put on our third ever live Peenko Sessions gig at the Hidden Lane Cafe in Glasgow, rather ace it was too. For me personally it's still the coolest place I have ever been to a gig at, the fact that it was me putting the night on might make slightly biased, but then again I can't think of a venue which is so intimate and sells the best cakes in Glasgow. For the last gig we had Randolph's Leap and I Build Collapsible Mountains, two acts that I have put records out with, so I guess it's safe to say that I knew them pretty well. The first artist on the bill, Daniel G. Harmann, I didn't really know much about, it was Luke (IBCM) that had originally asked me about putting on a gig with the pair of them as he was coming over to do a UK tour.
They are both signed to the same US label, Burning Building Recordings, where Luke is their only non home grown act. I must admit that I had only listened to a handful of Daniel's songs before he did this sessions, but he left me massively impressed. Anyway, I am going to try and get all of the sessions up at some point this week, for now though I reckon this session is a cracking way to get the week kicked off with...

A special thank you goes out to Sean from LUGS for filming and recording all of this, to Boab for his camera work skills, Kirsty for letting us take over her awesome cafe and to everyone who came along and made the evening as special as it was.

Presenting: The Peenko Sessions #5 - Beerjacket

I guess it safe to say that sessions play a major role in the... erm popularity of this blog, I very much doubt that the majority of folk that come on here do so for my ramblings. If it's tune that you are after, then it's tunes that you shall have (good tunes at that). Back in March myself and Sean, who we have to thank for making this all happen, put on our second ever live session night. I have previously posted the session that Michael Cassidy performed, so now it's time for the main course, a live session from Glasgow's finest alt-folker, Beerjacket. I did think about rattling of an array of superlatives to describe just how awesome this night was, but it really wouldn't do it justice. You really had to be there to fully appreciate how much fun this intimate gig was, I guess you'll just have to console yourself with these recordings.

Track Listing
1. Poor Captain Of The Soul
2. Island
3. The Bar That Never Closes
4. Fresh Legs
5. Drum
6. House Of Toys
7. Blood Roses
8. The Blues
9. Belong In
10. Crooked Finger
11. Cave

These recording were brought to us care of the amazing Sean Mccann from Light Up Glasgow's Skyline, a massive thanks goes out to him for making this all possible. Also, if you scroll down then you can check out the amazing paintings that Jenny Soep did on the evening, quite stunning I am sure you will agree. I'd also like to thank Kirsty for letting us take over the Hidden Lane Tea Room for the evening, it really is a special wee venue to be putting on live music in. If you can't be bothered downloading all of the tracks, then if you scroll to the bottom of this page there is a link embeded that will let you listen to or view the session in full.

Lastly, I will round this ramble up by letting you know that we're putting on our third live session on the 2nd of June with Randolph's Leap, I Build Collapsible Mountains and all the way from the US of A, Daniel G. Harmann. We only have a few spaces left, so if you fancy coming along either drop me an email or even better pre-book your tickets here.

The videos for all of the songs can be viewed on my YouTube page.

Presenting: The Peenko Sessions #4 - Michael Cassidy

Things seem to be going well for Michael Cassidy at the moment; yesterday he had the double whammy of supporting Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly in Newcastle, and making his debut on radio 1 when Ally McCrae gave Everybody’s Scared a spin. The Paisley- based singer-songwriter is definitely one to keep an eye on.

A Massive shout out to the very talented Sean McCann from 'Light Up Glasgow Skyline' for recording, filming and editing all of this for me.

Presenting: The Peenko Sessions #3 - Ghost Pants

Last week we had the first in the double header of Peenko Sessions with Burnt Island's session recorded live at the Hidden Lane Cafe. This week we have part, featuring the awesome Ghost Pants who were not only playing their first ever session, but it was also their debut live performance. For me personally it felt pretty special being their 'first', even though I couldn't see much of their set as it was so rammed that I had to stand at the bottom of the stairs. Thankfully though we had Sean and Boab on hand to record and film it all, so I can now sit and reminisce about what an awesome evening we all had.

All of the Peenko Sessions are recorded by the very talented Sean McCann from 'Light Up Glasgow Skyline'. If you're looking for someone to record and produce any of your songs then he comes very highly recommended, also he's a cracking fella too.

Presenting: The Peenko Sessions #2 - Burnt Island

Out of all of the gigs that I helped to organise last year, this was probably the one that was the most memorable. Not just because it was the only one that I was sober at (only because there wasn't a rider for me to steal), it was down to a number of different factors. The unique beauty of the Hidden Lane Cafe where the gig was held, the panic of finding out 24 hours before the gig that we didn't have a working PA and the shear awesomeness of both bands.
If you've ever been to the Hidden Lane Cafe then you'll be able to appreciate quite how small it is, so I am still pretty amazed that we managed to squeeze over 30 people into a space that small. Bearing in mind that we still had all of the band's equipment, the tables & chairs and all of the equipment that Sean, who recorded and edited all of the recordings, needed.

As it was our first venture into recording Peenko Sessions in a live setting, it made sense that we ask two bands to play. Having already sounded out Rodge from Burnt Island if he would be up for being our guinea pig, I later discovered that he was friends with Paul Carlin (of Dananananaykroyd fame), who had also been recording his own wee side project of lo-fi recordings under the moniker of Ghost Pants. Paul had roped in some friends and was looking to start playing live, so I thought it was too good an opportunity to miss. I asked him if they fancied making their live debut at 'The Tea Party', and thankfully they said yes.

This week we have the Burnt Island session, and you can download all of the tracks from the show below. If you keep scrolling down then you can find videos for all of the songs, apart from the last track 'Friends' which we don't have any footage of as the song was played in total darkness.
If you scroll to the very bottom of the page there is a stream for you to be able to download the whole gig in full.

Track Listing

I would also like to to take this opportunity to say a few thank you's. Firstly, to Kirsty for letting us come in and take over her beautiful little tearoom. The aroma of her home baking was much more enjoyable than your average gig where all you can smell is stale sweat.

Thanks to all of Burnt Island and Ghost Pants for coming in and for recording sessions for me. Burnt Island's mini album, 'Music & Maths' just sold out on CD last week but you can still download it. It comes very highly recommended. I will be posting up the Ghost Pants recording next Monday, so make sure you come back then for more awesome tunes.

A massive thanks to Boab from Campfires in Winter for being my knight in shining armour, as it was him who came to the rescue by providing us with a PA at the very last minute.

Lastly I have to thank the very talented Sean McCann from 'Light Up Glasgow Skyline' who records and edits all of this for me. If you're looking for someone to record and produce any of your songs then he comes very highly recommended, also he's a cracking fella too.

Announcing Peenko Sessions #2: The Tea Party, featuring Burnt Island and Ghost Pants

After the success of the first 'Session' it would seem rude to not do another one. For our second recording we have decided it would be a lot more fun to host them in more of a live setting. As much fun as it was chilling out on Sean's couch, watching Kid Canaveral, it's time for us to get some of you lot involved. So on Thursday the 11th of November, we will be having our first live outing at The Hidden Lane Tearoom in Glasgow. If you've never been there before, then I would urge you to go and check the place out it as it's a cracking wee place to get a cuppa and some home baking - hence the reason for me asking the owner, Kirsty, if we could put the sessions on there. So I would also like to thanks in advance to her for agreeing to let a couple of strangers come in and take over the place for the evening.

So we have the amazing venue all sorted, what about the musical entertainment for the evening.
Kicking off the evening and also making their first ever live outing we have Ghost Pants. Some of you might already be familiar with the name after I mentioned their two free EP's in Friday Freebies. In case you missed it, Ghost Pants is a new side project Paul Carlin of American Men and Dananananaykroyd fame.
Our headliners for our first outing in a live environment will be provided by the hushed tones of the gorgeous Burnt Island. If you haven't already picked up on this band then I urge you to check them out, their mini album, 'Music and Maths' is an absolute corker of a record. As with Ghost Pants, they too have a few free downloads up for grabs, just head over to Wiseblood Industries were you will find a couple of free singles.

So there you have it, two cracking bands, one amazing venue. I would love it if some of you could come and join us for the evening. The night will kick off at 7:00pm, it's £3 on the door and there will be an array of cakes and tea on offer. Just make sure you get down to this one nice and early as this is going to be a very intimate evening.

Presenting: The Peenko Sessions #1 - Kid Canaveral

It really is a week of firsts, I have had a few things on my bloggers to-do list and in this last week I am slowly but surely getting to 'live the dream'. I am sure that a lot of folk visit the site in order to download sessions, so I thought it would be great if I could one day do 'Peenko Sessions'. Well kids, that day has finally arrived, and kicking it off will be none other than Peenko favourites, Kid Canaveral.

So,'How did this come about?', you might well be wondering, and even if you're not I am going to tell you. No, I haven't secretly been training as a sound engineer/camera man/general techy kid. Instead I roped in a lovely fella by the name of Sean McCann to come in and help get this all off the ground. Basically he does all of the hard work and I reap the glory, sounds like a fair deal to me. Recorded back in July, the first ever Peenko Session was held in Sean's old living room. I might add that the fact that he no longer lives there has nothing to do with myself or Kid Canaveral. This session was originally recorded back in July, and it's been pretty hard to keep it under wraps until now, so I am pretty chuffed that I can now share it all with you as part of the 'Peenko is 2' celebrations.

So here's the first session in all of it's glory, it's a unique experience as you have Kid Canaveral playing stripped back acoustic versions of their songs.

Track Listing
1. You Only Went Out To Get Drunk Last Night
2. Good Morning
3. And Another Thing!!
4. Stretching The Line

What a way to kick things off, I am really chuffed at how things turned out. I just want to use this opportunity to thank Kid Canaveral for travelling through to Glasgow to play for little old me. Also, Sean, he truly is a legend, so thanks to him for stepping in to do all of the technical stuff that, and for spending his free time editing it all and making this possible. I wouldn't even know how to start, so I am really chuffed that he was willing to step up to the plate and make all of this possible.
