Fresh Meat Monday - How to Swim

Would you care to introduce yourself?

We are a pop group called How to Swim.

How would you describe the music you make?

We make sometimes simple, sometimes ornate pop music. When we play it live, it's sometimes loud and chaotic and sometimes less so.

How did you start out making music?

Gregor: Around the turn of the century, a bunch of musicians (some more musical than others) and I got together to try and make improvised music in the vein of the Beta Band or Beck. Crucially, none of us knew what we were doing.

What process goes into the way you write songs?

Gregor: I believe not knowing what I'm doing is still an important part of the process. On this new record, for instance, I've been learning about writing for groups of instruments and the perils of too many counter-melodies. There are ways of making sure every melodic line is visible, but you have to be prepared to throw some out if things get too cluttered. I think one of my problems, historically, has been an unwillingness to do that. I'm changing my habits as I go along. I think the point I'm making is that learning on the job can sometimes bear tasty, unexpected fruit.

What can people expect from your live shows?

We've stripped back the live line-up recently, so that we're more flexible for smaller venues and less of a pain for hungover sound guys. At our largest, we've been a 14-piece, which can mean that from gig to gig the sound can differ substantially. We're a six-piece now, which I think means people won't feel that every time they see us they're seeing a different band. It's still a big sound, though.

What are you all listening to at the moment?

Gregor: We've got a Christmas album coming out shortly, and I've been listening to some cheesy old Christmas stuff for inspiration, like Mele Kalikimaka by Bing Crosby. Other than that, the new Grizzly Bear is good and I've been listening to the first Justice record again, and trying to reverse engineer silly synth bass sounds with no hardware or know-how.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in the future?

The Christmas record will be out in the first week of December - it's a compilation of our last couple of Christmas EPs, along with a handful of new tracks. We're still in the process of finishing Niagarama, our next record proper, but we've basically run out of money, so we're not sure how we're going to finish it... We may have bitten off more than we can chew with that one. Elsewhere, we're going to be providing the instrumental score for a short film called Mission, which should be shooting in November. If there's enough music on there, we'll probably release it as a stand-alone EP. There's also the possibility that we might do something theatrical in the summer of 2013 at the Edinburgh festival, but that could be a bit of a pipe dream... We've always got a million things that we'd love to do, that, to be honest, are usually scuppered by us not having any money or a label behind us. We already have most of the material written for the follow-up to Niagarama - it's just the time and resources to record it that we're lacking...

Help Ma Boab, It's The 62 Word Review

How To Swim – It Doesn't Even Have To Be You
I've admired How To Swim for ages (the old Jockrock forum liked them – shows you how long they've been around!) but, despite their artistic consistency, they've never seemed to be able quite get beyond the cusp of greatness they've been stalled at for years. This is a gem of a single though, hopefully the album brings them superstardom. They deserve it.

Available to download for free from Bandcamp.

Flutes – Auld Archie
It's nice when you get something like this in your inbox: a band you've never heard of who just happened to have released something not just very good, but absolutely spectacular. There's a John Knox Sex Club feel throughout, but with lovely vocal harmonies and mellow flutes weaving their way towards a blazing climax, full of squealing guitar and rolling drums. Majestic.

Any Color Black's filthy electro rock and roll puts me in mind of some of The Black Keys recent album, El Camino. I've never been impressed by them previously, and it's not really the kind of thing I'd listen to but strangely I found myself humming it at work today so there's definitely something there. Decent, I'll be keeping an ear out.

Fin.

Friday Freebies

we're only afraid of NYC
I don't think that it's much of a secret round these parts that I'm a big fan of we're only afraid of NYC. Since the release of their debut EP, zero.one way back in 2009, they've continually gotten better in my eyes (and ears). Today sees the release of their new EP zero.four, which again sees the band take another massive step forward. Fuck knows how they're going to move upwards from this point, for now though I don't care as this EP's the dogs proverbials. Get in about it kiddie-winks, it's free...then again I guess you already knew that.

The Seventeenth Century
Bloody hell, this weeks Freebies is starting to look like a who's who of former AvP headline bands. Not only are the NYC boys getting into the spirit of sharing free tunes, we also have those wonderful Seventeenth Century boys getting in on the act with a couple of free tunes. Both of the tunes were written on their tour of the Netherlands earlier in the year, one of which was written in and recorded in just one hour especially for a Dutch radio station. Some bands never write a song this good in their whole life time and those talented fuckers came up with this in just 60 minutes. You can find out for yourself by downloading the songs for free from their Bandcamp page.

Drunk Mule
Having just given away their album 'Crash Test Y'self' for free, Drunk Mule are now back with a cracking wee festive tune called 'Feels Like Christmas', which you can download from their Bandcamp.

Stanley Odd
Edinburgh hip-hop outfit, Stanley Odd have continued on the success of last years Oddvent Calendar by doing it all again this year. For a whole host of free tunes and some cracking videos just follow the link.

Perfume Genius
If you were a fan of Seattle songwriter, Mike Hadreas aka Perfume Genius 2010 debut album, 'Learning', well you might be excited to learn that he''ll be back in the new year with a new album called 'Put Your Back N 2 It'. You can download 'All Waters' taken from said forthcoming album, for free here.

OnTheFly
Fence stalwart, OnTheFly is giving away his double album, DFNC001 as a free download on his Bandcamp. The album which is packed with an array of Remixes & Rarities, totalling 30 tracks all, acts as wee teaser of what we can expect from his debut album which is due out some time next year.

The Plimptons
It's that time of year again when bands start posting up their festive tunes to share with us all. The Plimptons have been getting right into the Christmas spirit, they are giving away a 3 track festive download called “Christmas All Over This Town” which can be downloaded for free from their homepage - they've even made a wee video to go with it too.

Randan Discotheque
How could you not like a band who describes their sound as being 'historico-funpop', I guess that none of that will make any sense until you actually give the band a listen. With a new album due out in Spring of next year, the band have decided to give away their new "The Purgatory E.P." for free on their Bandcamp. The EP features 3 new songs, "Old & Grey", "Who Took the Booze?" and "The Blackness" and there's also a cracking wee video to go with it too.

Hipster Death Squad
If there was an award for the best named band of 2011, thenHipster Death Squad would win it hands down. Having previously raved about their last single, it's good to see the band are back with another cracking wee release. Their new EP, Big City Nights is up on their Bandcamp to download for nowt and it's fucking ace.

Darren Hayman
The former Hefner frontman is giving away free mp3 download every day throughout December 2011 in the run up to Christmas. So far he's posted up tunes from the likes of The Mountain Parade, Josie Long & Ralegh Long and Stars In Coma. Find out more here.

Jack James
Scottish singer-songwriter, Jack James has been making a bit of a name for himself in this past week. Having posted his third album "Leaving Town" up for free download on Bandcamp, he managed to attract a whopping 66 thousand people (fuck me) to his site. Needless to say he soon ran out of free downloads, however, being the good soul that he is, he's reposted the album to download for free here.

How to Swim
Another band getting into the festive spirit are Glagow lo-fi indie pop outfit, How to Swim, who have just released their very own Christmas EP. Featuring 2 original songs and a cover of Pal McCartney's 'Wonderful Christmastime', the EP is free to download on their Bandcamp. The band celebrate the release of their EP in style next Friday (16th) at their 'Xmassive Discrimbobulation' gig at Sleazys in Glasgow, with support from The Store Keys and Adam Stearns.

Julia and the Doogans
What's that, you want even more free festive tunes. Well here's Julia and the Doogans take on the Christmas classic 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' which is free to download on Bandcamp.

mini50 records
Edinburgh label, mini50 records are getting right into the festive spirit as they've just posted up their Winter Sampler on Bandcamp. Featuring tracks from The Kays Lavelle, Graveyard Tapes and Chris Tenz, you can download it here.

Gringo Records
Nottingham DIY label, Gringo Records have a free sampler up for grabs, featuring tracks from the likes of Part Chimp and That Fucking Tank. Grab it here.

Mr Peppermint
The latest offering from Scottish DIY label, Winning Sperm Party, comes from noisy rock outfit Mr Peppermint, who's third album is free to download here.

Lovers Turn to Monsters
I have said this plenty of times, but I'll say it again, Kyle Wood aka Lovers Turn to Monsters , is one prolific young fella. I have lost count of the number of releases he's put out this year, as it's the festive period he of course has an EP to in with it. Download 'Feed my Christmas Time' for nowt via his Bandcamp.

Hopefully that's enough freebies to keep you entertained for a bit, next weeks post might be a bit more sparse as I am out next Thursday night...

Friday Freebies

King Post Kitsch
I know I have been banging on about King Post Kitsch for a while now and I will continue to do so as his new album is fucking ace. If you still haven't checked him out then head over to Song By Toad where you will find a free download of the excellent 'Fante’s Last Stand'.

Michael Cassidy
First off he records a Peenko Session, then the next thing you know Michael Cassidy is being voted as one of Scotland on Sunday's Eligibles for 2011. I am sure the fact that he's handsome man and talented as fuck has nothing to do with it, it was all about the influential power of Peenko, or perhaps not. If you haven't checked the sexy beast out already, then you're in luck as he's just posted a free download of a new demo called 'You do it again' on his Soundcloud page.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
I am guessing that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's wee hiatus was brought to a bit of an abrupt end seeing as nobody gave a shit about any of their side projects, or am I just getting cynical in my old age. Whatever the reasons for them returning, it's nice to have them back, yes their second album wasn't the greatest but I did miss those odd sounding vocals. In September they're releasing their third album, Hysterical, to remind us that they exist(ed) the band are giving away a free download of new track 'Same Mistake'. A welcome return? that's up for you to decide, personally I like this new song and am looking forward to hearing more.

Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks
Having spent most of time recently touring with his old band, Pavement, Stephen Malkmus is set to release a new album, Mirror Traffic' with his new old band (that makes sense right?!), The Jicks. You can find yourself a free download of new song 'Senator' on his homepage.

Campfires in Winter
It's been a while since we've heard anything new from 'my boys', but Croy's finest are back and they finally managed to nab themselves a new drummer in the form of the awesome Denny, formerly of Macabre Scene, who sadly called it a day this week. Anyway to remind you all that they've not disappeared off the face of the earth they've posted up 3 demo tracks for free download. Two of the songs are new and the other is a reworking of an older song, With A Ragged Diamond, I know you probably haven't been itching for this as much I have, but I must say it's nice to have them back.

Vetiver
The rather ace Vetiver are giving away a free download of their song 'Wonder Why' from their new album, The Errant Charm, which is out now on SubPop.

The Pineapple Chunks
They're based in Edinburgh, they sound ramshackle as fuck but I can't stop listening to them, so they must be doing something right. Hopefully we'll have more information on them for you soon, for now you can help yourself to a couple of free downloads on their Bandcamp page.

The Deportees
Our friends up in Aberdeen, Bedford Records are set to put out their third release next month with Americana outfit The Deportees. In anticipation of it's release they've posted a free download up on their Bandcamp page.

Maydays
Originally from the North East of Scotland, but now having relocated to Edinburgh, Maydays are purveyors of charming indie pop. You can find out for yourself by downloading their songs for free on their Bandcamp.

The Boosts
Invernessian band, The Boosts have been developing a bit a buzz up in their neck of the woods, they write catchy as fuck pop tunes and they give all of their music away for free, what's not to like. Their Soundcloud page is full of infectious wee pop gems all of which are free, don't say they're not good to you.

Honey
Glasgow based band Honey, recently released their debut E.P, Taste It And See, which they've posted up for free download. It reminds me a bit of the Stone Roses but with a touch of post rock thrown into the mix. I still haven't quite my mind up if it's for me or not, if it sounds like it could be for you then you can download it for free on their Bandcamp page, they're also playing tonight at Slouch in Glasgow.

The Tolbooth Sessions 2011
There is a free compilation of local talent up for grabs on Bandcamp, which includes the much hyped Friends in America, Hey Enemy and Miniature Dinosaurs. Download it here.

How To Swim
If you're heading up to the Insider Festial this weekend then you might want to check out How To Swim before you head off. They've posted a couple of singles for free download via bandcamp, you can get ‘Corpsing’ and ‘She Gets Around’ for nowt here.

Breton
Fat Cat have signed yet another awesome band, fuck knows how they do it. This lot are called Breton and they have a free download up on their Soundcloud page.

Vigo Thieves
You can get yourself a free download of their song Love Is Dead in exchange for a tweet.

Fountains Of Wayne
Bloody hell they're still going, I remember listening to these guys when I was in fifth year school (which was a long long time ago), then they released that song about Staceys Mom, or whatever it was and to be honest it totally turned me off them. Anyway if you still like them and want to hear more they're about to return with their fifth LP. You can download a free MP3 of new song "Richie & Rubin" for free via Stereogum.

Friday Freebies

Capitals
Those of you who pay attention might remember that I posted a session from this up and coming Edinburgh outfit just last week. Well if you liked what you heard or it passed you by, then fear not as their debut single "Hello World", has just been released as a free digital download. The band play live at King Tuts on the 16th supporting the fabulous Come On Gang!

Idlewild
It's 10 years since 100 Broken Windows came out, that makes me seriously old. I guess the band probably feel the same, it feels like ages since I last gave the 'wild a listen, I am starting to feel pretty nostalgic in my old age so I am going to make the effort to dig out their old albums. Anyway, enough about me on with the freebie, you can get yourself a free download of a live version of Quiet Crown in exchange for your email address here.

Jonsi
I don't think I am spoiling to much by admitting that the Sigur Ros frontman's solo album is going to feature pretty well this year in my albums of the year. If it wasn't for my partner in crime, Halina, I would probably never have bothered to check it out. However, as she continued to bang on about how amazing his album was I decided to take a chance on his album. I was huffed to bits that I did as it's an awesome album. If you haven't heard then I would suggest you get it added to your Christmas wish list, if you need some convincing then you can download of a new live version of his song 'New Piano Song' for free here.

How To Swim
Those crazy How To Swim kids have recorded their very own Christmas single, 'Sleighbells (Christmas Makes Me Blue)', rather good it is too. Not only that, but it's also free to download on their Bandcamp.

French Wives
In the third of their series of Home Fires posts, i.e. the ones where they give away a song for free download, those lovely French Wives have posted up 'Greet Me By The Doorway' as recorded as part of their Radio One session. You can download it for nowt here.

Clash Magazine
There is a rather nifty free download of Clash Magazines top tracks of 2010 available for free free download here. It includes tracks from LCD Soundsystem, No Age, The Phamtom Band and Avi Buffalo.

Six By Seven
I was pretty shocked to find out these guys were still going, shocked in a good way I might add. Their debut album 'The Things We Make' was particular favourite of mine back in 1998, then they just kind of disappeared off my radar. So I was pretty chuffed when I found that not only are they still going, but there are also a whole load of free downloads up for grabs on their Bandcamp.

Bad Religion
This week really does find me reliving my youth, it's been donkey's since I last listened to old school punks, Bad Religion. Well now I am going to add them to my old school catch up list as they have a free live album up for grabs in exchange for your email address, download it here.

FOUND
Another Friday and once again we have another freebie from those fabulous FOUND boys, as I am writing this the night before I am still in the dark as to what it will be. All I can say for sure is that it will be great and it will be free, they're good like that.

Miaoux Miaoux

In a week when pretty much all we've had to talk about is the white stuff, it feels pretty apt that I post a track called Snow. Taken from his amazing Blooms EP, if you haven't already checked out Julian Corrie's alter ego then now's the time to do some much needed catching up by downloading the track for free here.

The Savings and Loan
It feels as if I have been plugging Song By Toad a lot lately in Friday Freebies and rightly fucking so (I felt the need swear there, I put this down to Matthew's bad influence). This week he's posted up the second single from The Savings and Loan's debut album, 'Today I Need Light', which you can find here.

Gerry Loves
The fabulous new Edinburgh label are having their Christmas party next week, as part of their celebrations they've posted up a whole load of free download links from their 'alumni'.

Buffalo Tom
Another blast from the past this week, Buffalo Tom are back after an extended break, you can download a free tune from their latest offering here.

The Foreign Films
"For many years I’ve been recording, writing, and touring the world. I’ve played packed arenas, and empty bars. There’s been “next big thing” talk that quickly disperses into “next time” talk. My last band Flux A.D. splintered into some cool projects with Julie Fader and Graham Walsh having success with Feist, The Great Lake Swimmers, and Holy Fuck. I on the other hand wanted to reassess where I was and what music I wanted to make. I think the results are the best, and most fulfilling work I’ve ever been associated with. No matter the mysteries of the future, music truly is the gift that keeps on giving. At this link I have my new Fire From Spark EP free to download".

Atlas Sounds
I meant to post this last week, but somehow it got missed out, my fault sorry. There is a free download of an albums worth of material up for grabs here.

Perfume Genius
Much as my good friend Ian has tried to convince me, I am still not sold on the old Perfume Genius. Each to their own I guess, if it's your cup of tea or your just curious to find out what all the fuss is about then head over to Stereogum where you can download new track 'Dreeem' for nothing.

Galleries
You can download yourself a free copy of Galleries single 'Rocket Science' for free on their homepage, while you're at it their debut EP is also up for free download.

Jack James
Someone else who is getting into the festive spirit is Jack James who has posted both of his albums up for free download on his Bandcamp page.

Kori Pop
The rather lovely Kori Pop has released a free holiday EP on Bandcamp. Here's what she had to say about it... "If the thought of holiday tunes makes you nauseous...please do not fret!! They are one-of-a-kind mixes. Two tracks were written & crafted by myself in GarageBand. The other two are from everyone's favourite Christmas shows and were recorded at a friends place". Download it here for free

The Radio Dept.
Whilst visiting New York, The Radio Dept. popped into KEXP and recorded an acoustic Piano version of Heaven's On Fire which you can now download here, for free.

The Pipettes
Those lovely Pipette ladies have posted up a new Christmas song for free download, get it here.

01 October 2010

Friday Freebies

FOUND
In what is inevitably going to end up being called 'FOUND's Friday Freebie', Chemikal Undergrounds latest signings are very kindly going to be giving away a free song every Friday (it's like it was they did that just for me - they didn't though), until the release of their new album in March. That's a hell of a lot of free stuff! As I am doing this in advance I don't know what the first track they're giving away is, what I do know is that you can download it here.

French Wives
I know I already mentioned this at the start of the week, but this if something's good then it's worth mentioning again. The cracking French Wives have posted up new song, 'Welcome, in the night' for you ro get your hands on it for free . Just head on over to their Myspace and you'll find details on how to get your grubby little mitts on a copy. As I already mentioned on Sunday, the band also have a couple of gigs lined up this week, tonight night they'll be at The HAC in Irvine, followed by a headlining showing tomorrow at Stereo in Glasgow.

Chemikal Underground
If you haven't already signed up to Chemikal's mailing list you clearly are a bit of a muppet, it's not as if I don't harp on about the bloody thing every month. I guess there's just no telling some folk, here's what you missed this month. A new song by The Phantom Band called 'Walls', which is taken from their forthcoming album, 'The Wants'. Plus as if that wasn't enough, they've also posted 'You're Really Quite The Catch' (feat. Lisa Lindley Jones) from their new signings FOUND. The song is taken from their 2009 download album 'Snarebrained' which the band released to fun their appearance at last years SXSW festival. Now just make me a promise that you'll get yourself signed up to that mailing list....

My Cousin I Bid You Farewell
Another band joining in with some Friday Freebie thinking are Glasgow five piece, My Cousin I Bid You Farewell, who have posted up their track 'I'm Yours', on their Bandcamp page completely gratis.

How To Swim
If you are looking for something to do tonight (1st) in Glasgow, then look no further. Local indie-pop starlets, How To Swim are celebrating the launch of their new album, 'Retina (or More Fun Than a Vat of Love)' <> with a gig at Stereo alongside The Low Miffs and Over The Wall. Should you need a little bit more convincing, then head over to their Bandcamp where you can download their track, ' High School Apocalypse' for free.

UWS Freshers Festival Mixtape
This freebie ame courtesy of my fellow blogger Favourite Son, thanks for the tip mate! It's a wee mix tape featuring tracks from loads of cracking local bands, including Aerials Up, Pacific Theatre, Make Sparks, Trapped in Kansas and Aspen Tide. Just click the link to get downloading.

Skibunny
Fancy an MP3 from this lot? Well normally all you'd have to do is give them you email address and in exchange they'd send you their track 'Ooh Ah'. Now you don't even have to do that as their mailing limit is full (really?!), so you can just click this link to download the song directly.

Bear Driver
It's been a few months since I ran a wee introducing feature with this lot, if you missed it then now you can do some well deserved catching up. The band have posted up a free download of their brand new song 'Golden Touch' on their blog, give it a whirl it's a cracking wee tune.

Alanna Takes a Solo
Fancy getting yourself on some lo-fi indie pop folk, well look no further as there's a whole albums worth of it free from Alanna Takes a Solo. Just click here to download 'Stories of my earlier years'.

What a beautiful name..... Aye so Erin Mckeown, if you haven't come across this American singer song writer before then you are in for a bit of a treat. I caught her a good few years back at Tuts, where she made the great judgement/major faux pas (delete as you feel appropriate) of wearing a Celtic shirt on stage. No it wasn't one of those kind of gigs, she just liked to buy 'soccer tops' from the cities she was playing in. Anyway, I digress she's been churning out cracking albums for years now, so if you haven't heard her before then now is the time to do some catching up as you can download her song 'Queen of Quiet' for free here.

Smoosh
Here's one for you old-school hipsters. I featured this duo in Freebies a while back, but now they are giving a whole album away for free. You can download their new album 'Withershins' for free on their Bandcamp page.

The Cinnamons
"As the weather takes its annual turn for the worse, this definitely means Summer is well and truly over. With it brings the end of The Cinnamons - 5 Songs of Summer Project. Sometimes is now available for free download from The Cinnamons Bandcamp so please go and fill your ears".

Distiller Records
Having nicked my idea of running features on record labels*, the NME are forgiven this week as they ran a feature on the rather excellent Distiller Records. Home to rather excellent Sparrow & the Workshop, the label also has a whole host of amazing bands just waiting for your attention, some of which you can check out for yourself by downloading this free compilation.
(*I might well be talking bollocks here)

This weeks freebie from the doc comes from Glasgow four piece, Unkle Bob, if you head over here and give them your email address they will send you a copy of their song 'In My Head'.
