Fresh Meat Monday - MUMMAA

Would you care to introduce yourself?

Hello! My name is Dave, and I'm from the Highlands of Scotland.  I have a magic girlfriend, and we like to cycle everywhere together, travel about, enjoy the sun, and drink with mates. Oh, and I make music under the guise of MUMMAA.

How would you describe the music you make?

Em, I normally leave that for the listeners to do, so here goes... the records might all seem a bit escapist, but the music is inspired by real life things. Like cycling across Europe with Ellen, a year sharing a Parisian loft, or more mundane things like playing way too much N64 or watching Star Wars.

How did you start out making music?

Well, there were 6 years of unsuccessful petitioning the bands in my high school to let me play synth with them  (that instrument, and myself, were way too geeky I guess).
So after I left school, I decided to use my first pay check to buy a bass guitar. And I then used this to sneak a synth into a band as my 2nd instrument! And, voila, my first band Robot House was born.

What process goes into the way you write songs?

There are pieces of music I've literally spent years crafting: honing the structure, getting the perfect  recordings, and carefully programming every sound on synths and drum machines.
But often it is the songs I've rushed through creating and have amusing lyrics about meggings or something are the ones people seem to like the most! For Example.....

What can people expect from your live shows?

The live shows have a futuristic-hippy aesthetic, with lots of odd characters popping up: like The Zebra of Prog Rock, Trigon Man, and the Psychedelic Santa. Music wise, there will be a lot of zany machines on stage, with the most glorious gadget being the Theremin I got last Christmas!  Photos of such antics here.

What are you all listening to at the moment?

"Tropical Hot Dog Night" by Captain Beefheart. Summer 2013 better sound a little something like this or I'll be disappointed.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in the future?

Well, I'm lucky because a lot of exciting things are happening in my life the now, but musically, I plan to release a EP I recorded solely on a KORG Kaossillator (see video for example of this), and release an album I've been grafting on since 2009! It is called "Born For Summer", and will have way more vocals,  guitars and saxophone on it. Well, that's if I can find any musicians and singers who can put up with my DIY amateurism!
