Would you care to introduce yourself? Hi, we're Maydays, a six piece indie/pop band from all over Scotland. We are a drum kit, two guitars, a bass, a microphone and a ponderous Salvation Army organ.
How would you describe the music you make?
This dreaded question! Its never easy to describe your sound - nobody ever wants to name check because everyone wants to be original. However, the closest we've come to putting the sound of Maydays into words was that it blends the dynamics of The Walkmen with the pop sensibilities of Belle and Sebastian, Aberfeldy and other notable Scottish acts, before landing (rather nicely) somewhere in the middle.
How did you start out making music?
Well, there's not really all that much else to do in Caithness. Its a peaceful place to be but it's lacking in leisure facilities. So you start a band or you join a football team. Once everyone had made the appropriate choice we began learning how to be in a band by playing some cover songs. It didn't take to long to realise that we wanted to start writing our own songs.
What process goes into the way you write songs?
Our songwriting process has been very straight forward so far. We all write songs and when we have something suitable for the band we make horrendously rough recordings and email them about to each other. That gives everyone a chance to think about some ideas and then we all get together and fortunately (so far) it all comes together nicely. We do have plans to try different ways of working. This just seems to work well for us right now.
What can people expect from your live shows?
A pretty short, memorable set. We don't like to go on too much. The aim is that you still remember the first song by the time you've heard the last.
What are you all listening to at the moment?
We could be hear all night listing what each of us are individually listening to but collectively, when we were on tour a few weeks ago there was a lot on rotation in the van. Stuff like Girls; Orange Juice; The Walkmen...I even remember hearing Joe lean & The Jing Jang Jong a few times. Theres also a few Scottish bands like The Imagineers; The Stagger Rats; Run/Lucky/Free and The Merrylees that we're enjoying. And Swannie is pretty keen on The National and we're all beginning to understand why.
What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2011?
We currently have a single out on Bedford Records called 'By Appointment To...' which is only 99P. We also hope to play as many gigs as we can before the end of the year.
