Fresh Meat Monday - dashnelli

Would you care to introduce yourself?

We are Mark Dashwood and Iain Antonelli of the band Dashnelli from the central belt of Scotland. Hopefully, you can work out how the name originated!

How would you describe the music you make?

The songs we write vary in style but broadly approximate to Indie rock, ranging from acoustic to more rocky numbers (we're not talking eye of the tiger here). However, a common theme runs throughout as we try to combine good hooks/riffs with original lyrics.

How did you start out making music?

Dashnelli started writing songs as a hobby; Iain thinks the idea started one evening in a pub in Edinburgh, Mark can't remember that conversation. We started off with 2 guitars, a microphone and Cubase and created some simple demos. Soon we added a keyboard, electronic drum kit and acoustic guitars to the mix.

What process goes into the way you write songs?

We both write independently but work together to shape and hone the songs. The process always start with a hook, maybe a riff or a chorus line around which the song is built. Our approach to lyric writing differs somewhat; Mark's songs tend to be story-based, whereas Iain's are more personal. A lot of the songs take shape very quickly, maybe in an evening but there songs that can drag on, never a good sign.

What can people expect from your live shows?

Live shows are not something we have focused on up till now. We have been concentrating on crafting the songs and improving our songwriting ability. We are in the process of trying to recruit musicians to complete the line up with a view to some live shows later in the year.

What are you all listening to at the moment?

Iain listens to a lot of signed and unsigned Scottish bands like 'the Just Joans', 'ballboy' and 'Aberfeldy'. As a bit of a contrast, Mark has recently discovered Stevie Wonders 'songs in the key of life'.

What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2011?

We have just recently released our first album 'Spacewalking' which is available on Spotify, iTunes, eMusic and Amazon. We are currently working on a second album or EP, for which we have around 10 songs complete at the moment. We will aim to release this early to mid-2011.
