I know I have been mainly concentrating on Scottish acts as of late, I have tried to chuck in a few sessions here and there, but to be honest so much of my spare time seems to be taken up with keeping things local that some things just pass me by. Thankfully though sometimes things get pointed in my direction that, of which I am very thankful. In this particular case it was the band who found me through the lovely folk over at We Shink Ships. Something which I am very thankful for, so cheers Neil and Heidi!
'worriedaboutsatan' are an electronica 2 piece hailing from Leeds, as with most bands I don't really like to pigeonhole them, but if I had to then I would go with ambient post-rock and then some. They're heading north to sunny Glasgow at the end of this month supporting Her Name Is Calla. A gig which I only found afterwards is being put on by Boab, who posts on here from time to time (actually he's not done anything in ages, but I still hope he'll come back with one of his weekly reviews, I can but dream....). Anyway, I digress, here's Gav from the band to introduce worriedaboutsatan to you all
Would you care to introduce yourself?
Gav: Yeah, we’re worriedaboutsatan, which is Gavin and Tom. I write short little demos, that Tom then moulds into big songs. Live, I play guitar and Tom plays the laptop.
How would you describe the music you make?
Tom - Tough one, very tough. I’d say we make deep, atmospheric electronic music fused with guitars. Although our music has a large leaning to ambient music I feel that our sound has a warm and human element to it. it’s not cold and stark. And we have some pretty beefy beats too
How did you start out making music?
Gav: Well we were both in a rock band, and as it started to fall apart, I made a side project that was just me messing around with the software package Reason on my battered old PC. So I uploaded a few songs to myspace, and roped Tom into helping out with it once the other band had split up- and that became worriedaboutsatan!
What process goes into the way you write songs?
Tom – we have a few processes that seem to work because we’re not a traditional band where say, the singer writes the lyrics and the guitarist writes the chords. We make loops of music and sometimes we jam them out, and sometimes gav will make a rough structure on the computer and we’ll go from there. it’s a lot of fun and the possibilities are endless.
What are you all listening to at the moment?
Gav: loads really! There’s always some techno being played out by at least one of us. I’ve recently been getting into the more ambient/ drone side of things too- I love the new Richard Skelton stuff, and that new Zelienople record as well. Plus the new Four Tet album is great. And Boomkat never fails to bankrupt me on every visit I make too!
What can people expect from your live shows?
Tom – 2 lads who plug in and bash it out. joking. Well, hopefully something new to their ears and their eyes. and maybe even their whole bodies with our bass sounds. A lot of people are quite sceptical of the whole ‘live electronic music / DJ’ idea because it looks ‘boring’ to a lot of people.. however, we don’t fit that stereotype…
What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2010?
2010 is going to be a big year for us! We’re already playing with Errors for a few dates in March, then we’re off on tour around the UK and Europe with Her Name is Calla in March and April. We’ll have a ltd edition single coming out very soon too, and a brand new album is in the works too. We’ve also got a cover song in the works, loads of new gigs, and hopefully working with some new, exciting people too- happy days ahead!
