Galchen - The Red Dot EP
I tend not to sit out in the sun very often. It's so bright that it makes me screw my face up and look out only my right eye. I look like a bit of a spangle. I also burn easily. I persistently perspire, and the filmy moisture makes me feel sticky and uncomfortable. However, as a result of my distaste for baking hot weather, these last few days have been spent mainly indoors immersing myself in Galchen’s Red Dot EP. I was really looking forward to hearing this and it did not disappoint in the slightest.
I suppose most would lump the three-piece in the instrumental/post - rock category but they appear to have their own brand of this, something quite unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. Not content with the mid-tempo, lengthy meanderings of bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor and Explosions In The Sky, no track on The Red Dot EP breaches the 5 minute mark and most are quite direct, up-tempo affairs. Probably best if you have a listen for yourself but I can pretty much guarantee that this will be one of the best things you’ll hear all year.
