Happy Christmas

Peenko and all the gang would just like every single one of you a very merry Christmas,
if you're online today then you must be hiding from relatives, I don't blame you.

24 December 2009

Second Hand Treats

So you've finished all of your Christmas shopping, or at least I fucking hope you have. It's time to chill out have a few beers and prepare yourself for having to spend the next 24 hours stuffing your face and drinking till you can longer speak (or is that just me?). You might already be preparing yourself for some pretty god awful presents that you'll have to pretend you REALLY like, so why not treat yourself to a wee handmade EP from the fabulous Second Hand Marching Band. For a measly £3.50 they will make you a CD and you'll get your own numbered hand made copy. This tasty treat is only available up to the 1st of January, 2010, so if you want one you're going to have to be quick off the mark. As there will probably only be a few dozen or so made so it might be "pure special", you can order yourself a copy here (if you can't be arsed with CD's anymore then you can also download it, but that wouldn't be anywhere near as pretty!). You can stream all of the songs at their Bancamp page, you can also stream the first track on the EP 'Bonbon' below, cause I know how tough it can be to click on a link. Stop faffing about and get this bought, it's Christmas treat yourself.

Happy Christmas

Peenko vs Beerjacket

Upon reflection 2009 has been a mighty fine year for Peter Kelly aka 'Beerjacket'. He had his five minutes of fame, after his cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Dancing in the Dark' featured in the Rolling Stone and more importantly he released his critically acclaimed album 'Animosity', which came in at highly impressive #8 in the inaugural Scottish BAMS Award. As a wee thank you to everyone who voted for him he's very kindly given me permission to share the demo's for 'Animosity' with all of you, what a sweetie. As a few of you might not yet have been have heard any of Peters material I got him to answer a few questions for me, prepare to be won over....

Would you care to introduce yourself?
My name is Peter Kelly and I play music called Beerjacket. I don’t like to be considered a singer-songwriter but I do like to be considered. Too many folks have ruined the notion of being a solo musician. I’m not interested in making my own name an object of public interest. I’ve always seen Beerjacket as something I’m part of but which exists separate from me. It’s a bit like Fight Club.

How would you describe the music you make?
In sonic terms, it’s pretty basic – acoustic guitar, vocal and foot stomping, sometimes on a tambourine. On record, there’ve been some other instruments like bass and ukulele, occasional drum machine and handclaps, but these have all been pared down over the years in favour of making everything as direct as possible. The songs write themselves for the most part and I tend not to refine them much beyond the state they came to me.

How did you start out making music?
I was a bit of an odd child. When I was about 9 or 10, I used to write whole albums worth of lyrics and make artwork for them, even though I couldn’t sing or play an instrument. I’ve always liked the idea of a whole album. The big turning point for me was in falling completely in love with Nirvana when I was 13. From that point on, the way I thought about music was altered forever. While I was plugging away in bands in my teens and early twenties, the collective focus – regrettably - was always on doing demos to try to get the attention of record labels, rather than having the initiative to do things ourselves. Thank goodness things have changed so much as to more successfully accommodate the DIY alternative. I would always write whole demo albums and the bands I was in would pick the individual songs they thought would work best as demos for record labels, which was really a bit dispiriting given that I looked at these demo albums as full products. In contrast, when I began Beerjacket, there was an album for sale at my first show. The album format – even in the MP3 generation – is as essential to music as the novel is to literature.

What process goes into the way you write songs?
Usually, if a song is going to appear, it’ll do so without coaxing. I’ll pick up the guitar and my fingers will explain it to me. I try not to think too much when I write lyrics and construct them phonetically. It’s almost impossible to write a song about nothing and the meaning tends to become apparent once it exists.

What inspires you to write music?
It varies – maybe a record, maybe a book, maybe a feeling, maybe a mood. There is no predictable setting for inspiration or it’d be as easy as going there to make it happen. I’m not in control of writing, or at least, not when it’s good. If I have nothing to write, I write nothing. If I have something to write, I write something.

I know you’re probably sick of being asked about it, but did you ever find out whether ‘the Boss’ heard your cover?
The last time I spoke with Steve Van Zandt, he mentioned he’d passed it to Springsteen’s manager but I don’t know if he’s heard it. I’m not sick of the Dancing in the Dark stuff but it is a bit perplexing that it’s still a topic of conversation - after all it was only an hour’s work one evening after the album was finished. I didn’t mean anyone to hear the recording, I only sent it to one person but they decided to let everyone hear it! It’s funny how things work out. I thought it was terrible the morning after I did it but it was too late to stop it going further when it was already all over the Net... I suppose you could suggest it is a little bittersweet that the song that got the most attention is the one I didn’t write, but I chose to do it for the right reasons and I’m really proud of it now.

Have you had any interest from any labels? Is this something would interest you?
To be honest, I’m not sure what a label could offer me that would be worth my while. My output is entirely under my control, people enjoy working with me because it’s easy and I’m basically a nice person, plus I benefit from the support of musician friends like Matt from the National and Kristin Hersh. Their endorsement has helped me make Beerjacket better known in a more respectable way than a blanket poster campaign or something. The Internet has quite rightly made people more suspicious of marketing and has to an extent created more equilibrium between signed and DIY artists. If there is any question of ‘interest’ regarding labels, really the interest is mine. I’d be genuinely interested in what, if anything, a label could do for Beerjacket that I can’t do myself.

Lastly, What can we expect to see/hear from you in 2010?
I’m on a break from doing shows just now and will not be playing at least till about April, whilst in the meantime I’ll be demoing for a new album. Thanks for asking!

Animosity is available to download digitally on iTunes, eMusic, LaLa and Amazon MP3.
A limited edition digipack CD version is also available at his shows and from Avalanche Records in Glasgow.

The Scottish Bloggers and Music Sites Awards (The Scottish BAMS Awards) 2009

As a bit of fun for the end of 2009 I decided to try and do a little 'Album of the Year' poll amongst all of the Scottish music websites and blogs that I could think of. This was then compiled into one big list to determine who really released the greatest album of 2009. In order to do this I got in touch with a fair few folk, surprisingly most of them got back in touch to say that they'd be up for taking part. Here's a list of the motley crew that agreed to take part 17 Seconds, AyeTunes, Dear Scotland, Earz Mag, Elba Sessions, Glasgow Podcart, Hooligans Lament, Jim Gellatly, JocknRoll, Jockrock, Kowalskiy, Last Years Girl, Love Shack Baby, Manic Pop Thrills, My Portiswasp Says, Off the Beaten Tracks, The Pop Cop, Products of a Gaseous Brain, Song By Toad, The Blues Bunny, The Daily Growl, The Spill, The Steinberg Principle, The Vinyl Villain and Under the Radar.

A massive thank you goes out to every single one of you for agreeing to take part, I couldn't have done it without you, but then again you already knew that. Anyway, enough of the dramatic build up, it gives me enormous pleasure to announce that the votes have all been counted and I can now announce that the winner of the inaugural Scottish BAMS Award is none other than Scotland's very own The Phantom Band with their debut album 'Checkmate Savage'.

I managed to get a quick word with the Andy from band which I was well chuffed with as they are "not usually big on lists". Here's what he had to say "This makes us feel very honoured because the opinion of people out there giving opinions is what matters most, rather than the financially influenced press. It always amazes me that people would take it upon themselves to go out and champion a band or an album or a band for no material gain, but it gives me faith in human nature. Blogs and reviews have been the only advertising we've ever had. Apart from all those people who got online and promoted us, we'd like to thank those little almost-stale doughnuts you get in big tubs from Sainsburys for keeping us fat during the recording. We obviously also have our Producer Paul Savage and the wonderful people at Chemikal Underground to thank for letting us do what we want. These guys are the quiet heroes of Scottish music for sure."

Anyway, I am sure you are all wondering how the final list looked....

1. The Phantom Band - Checkmate Savage
2. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

3. De Rosa - Prevention

4. King Creosote - Flick the V's

5. Withered Hand - Good News

6. The Twilight Sad - Forget The Night Ahead

7. We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls

8. Beerjacket - Animosity

9. Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More

10. Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career

11. My Latest Novel - Deaths and Entrances

12. Malcolm Middleton - Waxing Gibbous

13. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - s/t

14. You Already Know - s/t

15. Broken Records - Until the Earth Begins to Part

16. The XX - s/t

17. The Antlers - Hospice

18. Sufjan Stevens - The BQE

19. And So I Watch You From Afar

20. Wilco - The Album

A mighty fine Top Twenty if I do say so myself, I really appreciate everyone taking the time out to put forward their votes, lets just say we had quite a wide spectrum of votes from Beyonce to Fuck Buttons, its great to see such diversity and to be honest I am over the fucking moon that the Phantom Band won. Now where's that tenner they promised me.....

Peenko vs Martin John Henry

It's been about six months or so since the demise of De Rosa, a sad loss to the Scottish music scene, thankfully though we have not seen the last of them. Lead singer Martin John Henry has gone solo and is currently demoing new material which should hopefully see the light of day some time in 2010. I caught up with (stalked) Martin at one of his recent gigs and he very kindly took the time out to answer some questions for me, here's the results....

It's been a few months since the De Rosa split, what have you been up to?

I’ve been tending to my personal life, enjoying a break from making music. De Rosa had been going hard at it for a few years and it was nice to step back for a few months. I’ve been listening to a lot of music rather than writing loads, thinking about how to approach this new solo project.

I really don't want to beat about the bush, so what brought about the demise of De Rosa?
I really believe that De Rosa had run its course. We had worked with such rigour during the making of our two main albums that it was disheartening for us to see them go largely unnoticed. There was a bit of tension within the band at the end of our last tour supporting Doves and it just seemed to show that we were all really tired of it all. By the time we all sat down to talk about things, I think each of us had already decided to call it a day.

Do you find it more liberating working on your own, or do you miss the team spirit that you can get in band?
I miss the band a lot. When it was good it was the greatest time of my life. Being in a band is like having a family around you, people who you trust that can inspire you to be your creative best. Every one of those guys put their own stamp on the demos I brought, taking the music to a place that belonged to the collective, not just myself. The thing is, that band was the only band I had ever been in, and my only experiences of making music had been in that setup. It’s exciting to take on the challenge of creating something on my own, seeing things through from the original idea to the finished recording.

Have you been writing much new material?
I’ve been writing for an album. I think I have about three quarters of it written, but there are a few songs still to come. Andy Miller - who recorded all the De Rosa stuff – will be recording it. I’ve played a few solo gigs in Scotland recently, just to get that first hurdle out of the way. It gave me the chance to try out some new material.

If so, what likelihood is there that we'll see any of it being released?
Anything that I think is good enough to be put out will be released in some form or other. I’m going to do a few DIY releases before the album is finished. I was thinking that these will be short run singles that I’ll sell through my own websites – quickly made, home recorded stuff, you know? I’m going to spend some time making the artwork interesting for these. The main album will be recorded at Gargleblast Studios in Hamilton, and I’m planning for it to be out in autumn 2010.

Have Chemikal Underground/Gargleblast expressed any interest in doing something with you?
Yes. These are early days and I hope to work with both labels again at some point.

What would you is your biggest inspiration in your song writing?
The trigger for composing something new often comes from listening to other people’s music, although other things, personal stuff, bits of language, photographs etc, can be the inspiration behind the words. I was thinking recently that the way I experienced music in my teens - through headphones, where you are placed right in the centre of the recording – is what made me want to make my own recorded music. I think that’s why I enjoy the recording part so much. The record that inspired me to pick up my guitar again after De Rosa was Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle by Bill Callahan, which is a fantastic sounding album. “Working through death’s pain” – what an inspiring line. The music that’s currently exciting me is the album Actor by St Vincent.

Do you find that you tend to come up with lyrics or the music first?
Music every time, but I think it’s more romantic to say that you write lyrics first. Although, I often write lists of titles and choose the most inspirational as a starting point for the music.

You recently covered the Beatles 'Because', for Mojo Magazines 'Abbey Road' tribute, how did that come about?
Dave Henderson, the guy who puts all the Mojo CDs together is a fan of De Rosa, and had asked us to do something on a previous CD. We were away touring at the time and couldn’t contribute anything. He got back to me a couple of months later, after the band had split, and asked if I’d be interested in contributing to the Abbey Road CD. It was really nice of that guy to give me the chance to do this. Andy Miller made a great job of that recording, and it was one of the best studio experiences I’ve ever had.

Where and when can people catch you playing in the flesh?
I’m playing at Sick Kids Sunday at the GRV in Edinburgh on 31st January. Come and see me and help people that need it at the same time.

Lastly, are there any acts that you would recommend that I check out?
Right now I’d get both St Vincent albums if you don’t have them. Best thing I’ve heard in a long time.

Once again I would just like to thank Martin for taking the time out to answer my rambling questions, it was very much appreciated. Now get yourself over to his Bandcamp page and download his new song 'I Love Map', it's cracking. You can listen to it below if you don't believe me.

For even more stuff from Martin head on over to Elba Sessions where you can stream a session he recently recorded for them, do it, do it now.

Peenko's Albums of 2009 #1 - The Phantom Band - Checkmate Savage

If there was any justice in this world, January of 2009 should have been the Phantom Bands announcement to the world that they were the next big thing, instead everyone lost their heads and went crazy over the Animal Collective. Their loss, as 'Checkmate Savage' is mind blowingly good, it's dark as fuck, I have been racking my brains as to how to describe this album, but to put it simply it can't be pigeonholed, which is probably the main reason why I love this album so much. If you choose to listen to me just once this year, then make this the time to let the Phantom Band into your life, you will not regret it.

Peenko's Albums of 2009 #2 - King Creosote - Flick The V's

Opening with a seven minute dance song (No One Had It Better) was really not what I had expected to hear on this or any other KC album, but as the album name suggests Kenny Anderson really isn't one for conformity. Taking a much more experimental approach, form dance to pop, to one of the most heartbreaking songs I have ever heard (Camels Swapped For Wives) everything is in there and it just gets better and better each time I listen.

Peenko's Albums of 2009 #3 - De Rosa - Prevention

There has been a surge in the popularity of Scottish bands singing in their native accent, De Rosa not only did this, but they took it one step further, singing about the history of their where they grew up and how it effected the world around them. Essentially a modern folk album,' Prevention' touched upon taboo subjects such as domestic abuse and drink driving, crafting them into some of the most beautiful songs t0 have ever emerged from this wee country. De Rosa were my holiday romance of 2009, no sooner had I fallen in love then they where suddenly gone. The Lanarkshire quintet released 'Prevention' in March, before quietly announcing a few months later that they had split a few days before they were due to play a headline show in Glasgow. The album also features my favourite lyric of 2009, "desire crawls on my back like a rat, I doubt Rentokil handle that" from the song 'Pest', that line just kills me. Over time I believe that 'Prevention' will come to be recognised as a classic Scottish album, I am just thankful I managed to catch them before the honeymoon was over.

Peenko's Albums of 2009 #4 - The Twilight Sad - Forget The Night Ahead

Pure unadulterated noise at it's very best, the Kilsyth boys second album showed no signs of any difficult second album syndrome. This album clearly showed that the 'Sad had moved on both musically and lyrically, although I must admit that I don find it a more uncomfortable listen (not that I am suggesting that this is a bad thing) than 'Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters', it's certainly a lot louder for one.

Peenko's Albums of 2009 #5 - We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls

For the third year running the good folk over at FatCat have struck Scottish gold in unearthing another amazing Scottish band, I wasn't sure if the Jetpacks would be able to convey their tight as fuck live shows onto record, but boy did the prove me wrong. 'These Four Walls' gets better and better with each listen, trust me I have had this on repeat a hell of a lot this year.

Peenko's Albums of 2009 #6 - Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More

I can be a right stubborn git sometimes, no matter how many times folk started telling me how great this band are, I still didn't listen. I only caved in after Halina Podcart tweeted about it one morning so I had a wee listen on Spotify and then marvelled at my stupidity for ignoring this beautiful album. The whole album is harmonically beautiful, the theme of the album seems to be all about love and loss, but don't let that put you off as this is one of the most uplifting albums I have heard all year.

Peenko's Albums of 2009 #7 - The XX - s/t

I know it might sounds strange, but I ignored all of they hype that The XX were getting prior to the release of their eponymous debut. The South London four piece, would have completely passed me by if it wasn't for that distinctive album cover, something about it just sucked me, I am glad that it did. This year the wife has been trying to get me into the Cure, not that I'm biting, but I really felt that the melancholic minimalist pop songs of the latter are not too dissimilar to that of the three (previously four) twenty year olds. Ignore the backlash as this album is atmospheric, minimalistic and more importantly seductive, an absolute joy to behold.

Peenko's Albums of 2009 #8 - Ambulances - The Future That Was

For me one of the most enjoyable things about recording session is discovering something new that new that would probably have passed me by. Out of all of the bands that I stumbled across Fife 6 piece, The Ambulances were by far and away the ones who stood out for me. Recorded in just 8 days in a cottage in Fife with legendary underground producer Kramer, 'The Future That Was' is more West Coast American Dream Pop than East Coast, Scotland. If I have one quibble it would be the lack of liver performances, as I'm itching to catch them in the flesh, hopefully 2010 will see that rectified.

Peenko's Albums of 2009 #9 - Butcher Boy - React Or Die

Back when this album first came out it was a minor revelation for me, I think I even heralded it as being the new 'Tigermilk', I might have been getting a bit over excited, but fuck me this album is good. It's very twee, so if that doesn't float your boat then it probably won't be for you, personally it really worked for me. Still relatively unknown in their home town of Glasgow, the septet keep things very low key, playing only a handful of low key shows in bowling clubs and cinemas. For me this album was a major step forward from their debut album 'Profit in Your Poetry' filled with beautiful harmonious songs, if you are looking for something that bit different to add to your Christmas list then look no further.

Peenko's Albums of 2009 #10 - Malcolm Middleton - Waxing Gibbous

If this is to be last Malcie's last album as a solo artist then he really is going out at the top of his game, opening track 'Red Travelllin' Socks' was one of the most uplifting songs of 2009, it doesn't fail to raise a smile. This album is quality from start to end, it even has Mr Middleton trying his hand at a bit of rapping. If this really is to be his last album before he takes an indefinite hiatus, then he' definitely gone out in style.

Friday Freebies

The Kissaway Trail
First up in this weeks Friday Freebies we have the rather delicious Kissaway Trail, a five piece band from Denmark. Their eponymous debut album was one of my favourite albums of 2007, so I am pretty excited about the release of their sophomore album next year. As a wee taster the NME has a download of a new song entitled 'SDP' which you can find here
Then go listen to 'Smother + Evil = Hurt' on their Myspace, it's quite simply stunning.

As you should be starting to get into the Christmas spirit, you might be thinking of thinking some alternative Christmas tunes, so you might be interested to hear Kill It Kids cover of Low's 'Just Like Christmas' which is free to download here.

There Will Be Fireworks

Another band getting into the festive spirit are the Firework's who have put up their very own Christmas song, 'In Excelsis Deo', up to download for here. A second album is penned in for release early next year, so this should serve as a tasty little treat to keep us going.

Malcolm Middleton
Lastly, this one's a bit of a cop out, as you have to be going to see one of Malcie's gigs to get this song, I'm off to see Modest Mouse when he's in town so I won't be able to grab myself a copy (although if anyone would care to share it'd be very much appreciated).
What you'll need to do is sign up at the merchandise stall at one of his gigs, then you'll be sent a copy of previously unreleased track 'Ten Green Bottles'.
