Peenko's Nostalgic November #29 - Grass Show

Another day, another fine pop band from the mid-90's, today I am going with Swedish band, Grass Show, their album 'Something Smells Good in Stinkville' is a mix of powerpop and Britpop and well worth hunting out.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #28 - The Junket

The Junket were a punchy rock trio from the Kettering, it was their mini album 'Stamina' that first grabbed my attention. Released on Deceptive Records, DJ Steve Lamacq's former label, they released two albums Stamina (mini album) and Lux Safari, eventually splitting in 2001, with some of the band later going on to form Captain. If you like Idlewild or Placebo then this might just be for you.

Friday Freebies

This weeks Friday Freebies has a very distinct Fife/Fence Records feel to it, mainly cause all of those nice folk have something to share with you and it won't set you back a bean.

The English Bore
First up we have The English Bore, who is giving away the first version of his new album for free (there's 4 versions of it apparently) you can download it for free here.
"Its an experiment in tonality, stereo fields and disintegration, and an honest attempt to make something completely original. its not really succeeded, but it is what it is."

Steve Mason

Next up we have Steve Mason, the former lead singer with the Beta Band, he released his new single 'All Come Down' on Monday there, but curiously it is also available as a free download over at The Quietus. If you fancy having a listen/download then you can grab yourself a copy here. If you feel guilty and would like actually pay for the single then you can do that here.
Steve Mason's new album Boys Outside, will be out in March of next year.

King Creosote

You might have read about the never to be officially released King Creosote album “my first bit of strange in 13 years” on Under the Radar this week. The concept is basically that KC has an albums worth of material that he would "rather not record and release in the usual way". So he is encouraging folk to record the album from a handful of live shows that he will perform at this years Homegame Festival.
Sound like a really interesting concept to me, here's hoping that I make it to one of the HG shows. Anyway, as per usual I am rambling, the point of this entry was that during the Fence Halloween weekend, King Creosote invited various Beeflords along to record a special recording of said album, which has now been put out for everyone to share. Sweet!
For more detailed information on this and plenty of other Fence type things head on over to the Beefboards, where you can meet loads of great folk, they don't bite honest.
Oh and more importantly to download the recording go here, NB the recording is in FLAC and will take a bit longer to download. If that's a problem for anyone let me know as I am sure I could convert a copy into MP3 if anyone asks nicely.

Fránçois And The Atlas Mountains
And last but more certainly not least, a wee taster of the latest release from Fence's F&TM, a cheeky MP3 of 'Be Water' can be yours for free over at The List, along with an interview with Fránçois himself. Get it done.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #27 - 60ft Dolls

The 60 Ft. Dolls were a Welsh band who were about in the mid-'90s post-grunge, Britpop they enjoyed moderate success in the UK, but soon disappeared off my radar, eventually splitting in 1998. If you are a fan of punck bands like the Clash or the Buzzcocks then why not look out their debut album 'The Big 3', it's a hidden gem just waiting to be rediscovered.

A reason to visit Stirling!

Yes there really exists one. ;)

In the past three years or so since I have been at university in Stirling the music scene has changed and grown a lot. Not only are there a lot of bands now coming out of the area but we are also getting good acts into the city as well. We have even managed to get those very successful Frightened Rabbits back (last time they were here was April '08 on the Midnight Organ Fight tour).

But the gig I want to talk about features Stirling Universities Student Radio station, Air3, going up against the Stirling Tolbooth's own monthly alternate music night, ReLoaded. Air3 not only run the radio station but also put on Transmission in the Union every Thursday night during term time and they have had some rocking bands this semester whilst ReLoaded have brought acts like The Twilight Sad and The Cinematics to the fair city. On December 3rd on ReLoaded's home turf, the Tolbooth, they shall both be putting on a grand lineup of acts as they battle it out to crown the best promoter.

Air3 is bringing along The Darien Venture, Jocasta Sleeps and Mitchell Museum. ReLoaded counters with the best of Stirling bands in the form of Miniature Dinosaurs, Jack Butler and The Leads.

That's 6 great acts. For a poultry £6. £1 an act. The fun starts at 7pm and goes late into the night with a DJ battle following the band showcase.

So take a wee trip and come to Stirling for a great night of music.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #26 - China Drum

The mighty 'Drum were the first band I ever saw were the drummer was the lead singer, although eventually they added a body to their ranks and moved singer/sticksman Adam Lee form the of the stage. Probably most famous for their cover of Kate Bush's 'Wuthering Heights' they were a punk rock band who released three albums 'Goosefair', 'Self Made Maniac' and 'Diskin' (under the name the Drum). If you are looking for a starting point I'd go with debut album 'Goosefair', every song on there are absolute corkers.

Something For The Weekend....

First up, if you fancy a night on the tiles this Friday (the 27th), then why not head along to Pin Up Nights 6th Birthday Party at The Flying Duck. Where you can catch The Dirty Cuts, We're Only Afraid Of NYC, Mitchell Museum (really liking these guys) and Always, Me, Me, Me.
With the added bonus of a special birthday edition fanzine and badge for the first 100 to arrive, plus a birthday party wouldn't be the same without cake (and er free toast?!). For further details check the website (while you're there check out there 'leaked' BBC SOUND OF 2010, class).

As part of the series of gigs to launch the forthcoming theapplesofenergy album, from a stolen sea, a new Glasgow recording, publishing and promotions company (busy bee's that they are).
The third gig in series has one of the best line-up's I have seen in donkeys, it's this Sunday (the 29th Nov) at Stereo in Glasgow, featuring theapplesofenergy, Meursault, Second Hand Marching Band and Benni Hemm Hemm. In the words of Larry David, 'pretty, pretty good'. Tickets are £7 and are available to buy from Ticket Scotland.

If you fancy a night out in the City of Discovery, then check out this night being put on by Manic Pop Thrills at the Westport Bar in Dundee. The line-up he has organised is a belter, featuring Saint Jude's Infirmary, Panda Su, Kid Canaveral and Hookers For Jesus (is it just me or is this a cracking name for a band? Okay I guess it's just me). Tickets are only a fiver, a complete bargain in my eyes and are currently on sale at Groucho's Record Store. As an added incentive the first 50 people who purchase tickets in advance will get a free EP on arrival at the gig. For further details head on over over to Manic Pop Thrills, oh and while you're there mind bookmark his rather ace blog.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #25 - Jocasta

Jocasta were the forerunners for what we now know as alternative stadium rock, pre-empting the sound of bands like Muse, Coldplay and Snow Patrol. Alas they never broke through to the mainstream, which is a bit of a shame as they had some top tunes.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #24 - Carrie

Carrie were a pop rock group, comprised of Steve Ludwin and ex-EMF bassist Zac Foley (RIP) in 1998 after EMF split, they released a couple of singles and one album 'Fear Of Sound'
(their only full length release). It was quite an under-rated album, full of catchy little pop songs, sadly they are another band to be filed under the 'should have been much bigger' banner.

Bis to play Primavera Sound Festival

Bis have announced a one off re-union show at next years Primavera Sound Festival, Barcelona, alongside acts such as alongside Pavement, Pixies and the Fall (nice company to be keeping).
If you have considered a change to the the usual UK festival circuit then I'd highly recommend you check this event out, there's something much nicer about guaranteed sunshine, partying till the early hours of the morning and a lack of drunken neds. If this sounds like it'd be up your street then you can find out more about the festival here.

It's that time of the month (poor I know, but hey it amused me), it's time for the one hit wonders that were Period Pains. They were an all girl teen punk band, all aged around 13, who had one 'big' ht which slagged off the Spice Girls, pop genuis at its very best.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #22 - Kenickie

Before being a television/radio personality, Lauren Laverne fronted the poptastic band, Kenickie, a four-piece punk band from Sunderland. The bandcemerged during the Britpop years of the mid-90's, taking their name from their favourite character in the film Grease, their catchy pop-punk tunes with attitude were catchy as fuck, sadly thought they got lost in the quagmire of bands that emerged during the Britpop era.

Friday Freebies

Silver Columns
I am not sure if it is still hush as to who Silver Columns actually, in case it is let's just say that they're two well known faces from Fence Collective. More importantly what you need to know is that they sound amazing, imagine Jimmy Somerville fronting Hot Chip and you're half way there. Their debut single, 'Brow Beaten' is free to download over at the NME, while you can grab a copy of their remix of Peter, Bjorn & John's 'It Don't Move Me' from their website.

Macabre Scene
I know I mentioned these guys earlier in the week, but what I didn't mention was that they are currently giving away two newly recorded songs Pride of Lions and We Eat Light
for free. If you like your post punk then I strongly recommend you check these guys out, to be honest this music isn't really my cup of tea, but there's something about Macarbe Scene that just works for me, I have been hammering their songs a fair bit this week, I hope you end up doing the same. Also, while you are at it, check out their cover of The Smiths 'Last night I dreamt somebody loved me' recorded by the lovely Glasgow Podcarters, cracking stuff.

The Unwinding Hours
From the ashes of Aerogramme comes the Unwinding Hours, and if the songs posted on their myspace are anything to go by then their debut album due for release next year will be an absolute belter. If you don't believe me then head over to The Popcop as he's got an exclusive free download of 'Knut', I strongly urge you to check it out.

Beach House

The American dream pop duo are giving away single 'Norway' from their forthcoming album 'Teen Dream' and all you have to do is go to their homepage.

Julia & the Doogans
If you like your music to be soothing, with a touch of twee 'ness then Julia & the Doogans may well be your 'new favourite band'. Unfortunately though you'll have to wait till next year until you they will actually release anything, however, if you sign up to their mailing list thenyou should receive some free stuff in your mailbox this weekend.

Adam Stafford
A late addition to this weeks Friday Freebies comes from Adam Stafford from Y'All is Fantasy Island, he is giving away his official debut solo album Awnings for free here.
Thanks to Jim from Aye Tunes for the heads up on this one.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #20 - Cecil

Cecil for me are probably the most nuts live band I have ever seen in my life, not nuts as in wearing stupid masks or shitting on the stage, good fun nuts. They were a five piece from Liverpool, live very few bands have ever lived up to the amount of fun that I have had at any of their gigs, highlights include singing half of their set with lead singer Ste Williams doing half of their set standing on the bar, while punters were still buying drinks. I know I am banging on about them being great live, but I really felt they had the tunes to back it up, my particular favourite song was 'Upside Down Smile', which is why I have chosen to share it with you today.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #19 - Urusei Yatsura

Urusei Yatsura were an excellent Glasgow based Lo-Fi band that were about in the 1990's, they were heavily influenced by bands like Pavement, Velvet Underground, Pixies and Sonic Youth. They released three albums in total, We Are Urusei Yatsura (1996), Slain by Urusei Yatsura (1998) and Everybody Loves Urusei Yatsura (2000) before finally calling it a day in 2001.
The band name came from a Japanese comic, and roughly translates as "those pesky female androids" useless fact I know, but I felt I had to share. Three of the four members are now in Projekt A-Ko who released their debut album earlier this year.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #18 - Seafood

Seafood were a four piece from London that formed in the mid 90's, tagged as being a "post-grunge band", to date they have 4 full albums and a mini album/EP. If you like your Sonic Youth and the like then I reckon you'll like Seafood, sadly they recently called it a day, so no chance of seeing them live, if you are looking for a good starting place I'd recommend you start with 'Messenger in the Camp.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #17 - The Llama Farmers

The Llama Farmers were another teenage band that garnered some attention in the music press in the post-Britpop years, they were more indebted to the alternative American scene of the mid-90's, think post 'Nevermind' bands and you are half way there. They released two albums, 'Dead Letter Chorus' and 'El Toppo', and even played with some great Scottish bands including Idlewild and Biffy Clyro, which should give you a good indication of what they sound like.

Three Great Bands For Three Little Pounds

If you are at a loose end on Thursday night, or if the appeal of watching soaps all night doesn't quite appeal, then you should head along to Pivo Pivo this Thursday night (the 19th) for three cracking local bands. They would be Croy-based band Campfires In Winter (Boab's band in case you didn't already know), The Morgue Party Candidate and Macabre Scene all for the princely sum of £3, a pound a band, you can't complain at that. If you haven't heard of any of them before (shame on you), then you can have listen to their Myspace's below, or download an MP3 which each of the bands have kindly provided. I caught MPC and the Macabre boys on Saturday at Define Pop, both really good live, as for Campfires in Winter, it goes without saying that they'll be good, or at least they better be as Boab's promised me "it'll be like being ear sexed...in the ear!!! ". If you do make it along, then I'll be the beardie boy who will not be "dancing like a tit"à la Saturday night.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #16 - Radish

In the UK we had Bratpop, Stateside they had 'Sugar Metal', or at least they had Radish who coined the term to describe themselves. Fronted by a very young (15 I think) Ben Kweller. If you remember these guys it's probably from their Top-40 hit "Little Pink Stars". At the time I seem to remember Courtney Love proclaiming Ben to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but then again she did used to do that with a lot of bands. Anyway, download the song as it's fucking quality.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #15 - Blameless

Another band that you could probably describe as being ahead of their time, they played no-thrills indie pop songs, if they were to emerge now they'd pretty much be lumped in with bands like Snow Patrol and Coldplay. The Sheffield quartets debut album 'The Signs Are All There' is full of potential anthems, the only problem was that nobody was really listening, and alas the band completely vanished following its release.

Snug were another band that came under the collective term of Bratpop, the 'scene' that never really took after the demise of Britpop, they played fun powerpop and even had a video with Melinda Messenger in it. Their other big claim to fame was that one of Snug's lineup was none other than singer song-writer Ed Harcourt. Again listening back to these guys makes me feel very very old...

Peenko's Nostalgic November #13 - Baby Chaos

Like most folk it was Nirvana that showed me the light and showed me a world of alternative music, but they weren't my first love in music, that honour goes to 4 lads from Stewarton, a tiny wee village outside Kilmarnock. I first saw them supporting Terrorvision at the Barras way back in 1995, followed by a headline gig at Tuts a few months later (incidentally, the first band on the bill that night were a wee band a called Travis). Their debut album, 'Safe Sex, Designer Drugs and the Death of Rock 'n Roll' was played constantly in our house, much to the annoyance of my folks as both my me and my sis fell for this band big style.
In the end various spates of bad luck, including losing a drummer to a heart murmur, their American A&R man leaving the company on the cusp of the release of their second album 'Love Yourself Abuse' and also managing to lose their tour bus whilst on tour in the States, meant that they never managed to make the breakthrough they thoroughly deserved.
Baby Chaos later went on to become Deckard, releasing a a further 3 albums, lead singer Chris Gordon is now in Union of Knives, who's second album is due out in the new year.

The Morgue Party Candidate
I'm still in two mind as to whether this is one of the best or worst names for a band that I have heard in ages, but the one thing is for sure their EP 'Good Morning, Good Night' is pretty damn good, and it's available for free here . If you like what you hear and you are going to the Define Pop Festival at the Flying Duck tomorrow (the 14th of Nov) then you might wanna make sure that you're there for say about seven, as they're on at ten past.

Euros Childs

If you were at the Edinburgh leg of the Music Like a Vitamin show in Edinburgh last month then you might well have caught Euros Childs set with Norman Blake. If you liked what you heard that night then you might be pleased to know that if you add yourself to his mailing list, then he’ll let you download his new album ‘Son of Euro Child’ for free, go get it here.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #12 - Beth Orton

When I got my first ever car (a blue Fiesta, called Terry) I played Beth's debut album 'Trailer Park' an unhealthy amount of times, there was something quite haunting yet soothing, her voice still kills me. At that time she was pretty much every indie boys dream girl, you couldn't help but fall fall for her self assured kookiness. I have decided to go with 'She Cries Your Name', based purely for the line 'How fickle fate can be', one of my favourite lines in a song ever.

De Rosa - Unreleased Songs

I have been sitting with these songs ready to post for quite a while now, I was holding out for an appropriate story or the like to attach them to, alas that time has never come round so I have decided to just post them up on their own. Peenko's Nostalgic November #11 - Chicks

Chicks were three Irish girls, Isabel Reyes-Feeney Annie Tierney and Lucy Clarke, who played catchy fun pop songs. It was their debut EPCriminales Coches Pistolas y Chicas” came out on Supremo Records way back in 1998, it got a lot of airplay on the Evening Session back in the days of Lamaq and Wiley (when she wasn't a fake twat). They then went onto release a second EP 'Little Monkeys With Lots Of Money', both EP's are both filled with smart, catchy pop tunes, to be honest I had forgotten all about them until I started this whole nostalgia trip, I am glad I did now. Anyway, apparently they later went on to release a an album, if anyone has a copy and they'd care to share then let me know....

Introducing - Sleigh Bells

It's been a while since I did an 'Introducing' feature on a band that wasn't Scottish, but this Brooklyn duo have really got me quite excited that I just had to share them with you boys n girls. Sleigh Bells are Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss, the fusion of their different musical backgrounds, Derek previously playing in hardcore bands and Alexis was formerly a pop singer.
I know that sounds like an unlikely combination, but somehow it just works, some tracks are punchy and in your face, while others are more melodic and down beat. As it will soon be that time of year for folk to start tipping bands that will make a break through in 2010, I'd like to get my first tip in early, Sleigh Bells will (hopefully) be massive next year.

Peenko's Nostalgic November #10 - Jetpack

Today's post quite a self indulgent one, as there's virtually feck all about Jetpacks out there on the web you're pretty much at my mercy, so just trust me on this one. Jetpacks were a post-grunge esq band, I saw them a few times when they supported 'A' and if my memory serves me right Southend Post Rockers 'Understand'. They didn't really release all that much, a couple of singles I think, Larry Hibbitt from the band later went on to join Hundred Reasons after Jetpack disbanded.
