Introducing - Come on Gang

Radio 1's Vic Galloway - "the best unsigned band in Edinburgh"

Formed in spring 2007, Come On Gang originally hailing from Dublin, Brighton and Galashiels, respectively. the band are now Edinburgh based, having got together at the cities Art College.
The one thing makes this power punk trio stand out from the crowd is that drummer Sarah Tanat Jones is also the lead singer. After receiving rave reviews for their shows at SXSW this year, COG are certainly one's to watch this year.

Come on Gang hope to release their debut album in October, until then you can tide yourself over with their first two singles (details of ho to get them below)

Introducing - Butcher Boy

I am not sure why, but since the start of the year the number of great Scottish albums to have come out has been nothing short of phenomenal, what's even more surprising for me is the number of 'new' (or at least new to me) acts to have emerged. With albums by the Twilight Sad, Idlewild, Broken Records, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Lord Cut Glass and My Latest Novel to name just a few - still to come this really is turning into a bit of vintage year for Scottish bands. Here's another one to add to that list, Butcher Boy, a band I have only just come across in the past few weeks after I read about them playing a gig in Queens Park Bowling Club, how did I miss this?! Apparently in the past they've done gigs in Queens Park Cafe (the ice cream shop, not the pub) and various other Southside venues. They are set to release their second album, React or Die on the 6th of April, and an absolute corker it is too, do you remember the first time you heard 'Tigermilk' well that's pretty much how I felt after my first listen, really i can't recommend this highly enough. If you want more info or a better description of the band get googling as I really don't think I have the capability to emphasise quite how good their second album actually is.

Outsider Festival line-up announced

After a years hiatus, the Outsider Festival returns under the banner of the Homecoming Scotland campaign, it certainly looks better than the ned-fest event that is the Homecoming Festival. Set in the Rothiemurchus Estate, near Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park, this years line-up includes:

Sharleen Spiteri
Drever, McCusker & Woomble
The Fence Collective & very special guests
King Creosote
Malcolm Middleton
James Yorkston
Phantom Band
Club Propaganda with very special guest DJs The Futureheads and Adam Ficek (Babyshambles)
Lau
We Were Promised Jetpacks
Russell & Tam Dean Burn are ‘The Bum-Clocks’
Club Motherfunk with special guest DJ Chris Geddes (Belle & Sebastian)
Karine Polwart
Attic Lights

Earlybird tickets are now available at a very reasonable £50.00 (non-camping)/ £65 (camping) plus the unavoidable booking fee - for the weekend. Seems pretty damn cheap to me, considering TITP is about 3 times that price, plus there should hopefully be less neds/f*ckwits.

Tom Vek - Summer Sundae (2005)

Whatever happened to Tom Vek, after releasing one blinding album back in 2005 he pretty much vanished off the face of the earth. There have been loads of rumours as to his where-abouts, ranging from prison to locked up in a studio recording, but unable to settle on anything as he's too much of a perfectionist. here to serve as a reminder of his greatness is a live set from Summer Sundae back in 2005.

Introducing - Trembling Bells

Trembling Bells are a four piece Glasgow based band, they play folky/rock music, yes I now another one, I really am mellowing in my old age. They have sound a bit like their fellow adopted weegies, Belle & Sebastian, but with a much more stripped down country-folk sound, they have also been compared to Fairport Convention, but as I don't much about FC, you'll just have to take that for granted.

Trembling Bells launch their debut album 'Carbeth' at Mono on Friday the 17th of April, further details can be found here

Malcolm Middleton gets in touch with his feminine side

With his new album now in the can, but the release date not being until June, 'Malkie' seems to be getting a bit bored kicking about the house all day. For him this may well be a bad thing as he's at a bit of a loss as to what to do with himself, thankfully for us it's all good as he's decided to try his hand at a couple of cover versions, the topic he has just chosen to cover is "My Favourite Modern Girl-Band Pop Songs" and here are his first attempts, "Issues" by The Saturdays and "Call The Shots" by Girls Aloud. These songs are free to download from his webpage, so if you like what you hear, you know where to go.

Also, you can now follow his adventures on twitter, you can hear exciting stories, like how he went to feed the ducks in the park, but forgot to take any bread....

The Leisure Society - The Sleeper

I only came across the Leisure Society a couple of days ago after reading about them on Planet Sound (9/10 no less), I've only managed one listen through so far, but I'm already hooked. Here's that PS review that got me intrigued, defo a contender for album of the year.

Initially a band featuring Shane Meadows, mainman Nick Hemming scores Meadows' films. With singer Christian Hardy, he's finally made an album.

Championed by Guy Garvey, their music drops mandolins, banjo, pedal steel and choirs into beguiling, simple but passionate songs with Hardy's voice as clear and bright as God's spotlight.

As moving as Elbow, as stirring as The Delgados, it's wholly magical.

Introducing - Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band

Seattle five-piece Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band created buzz for themselves with homemade PSAs they streamed on their MySpace back when they had no music to distribute. Turned out people took notice, including Current TV and Seattle newsweekly The Stranger, who fueled the band's impending hype with lengthy features and segments. Once the band finally played their first show this past July, the inevitable hype-reality ratio was shattered, proving that these cats are the real deal. Oh, and let's not forget: they boast a 13-year-old drummer who's also the brother of lead singer and adopted by him and his wife (also in the band).

All confusing family lineage aside, these guys were eventually noticed by producer Scott Colburn (Arcade Fire, Animal Collective) who produced their Weepy EP as well as their forthcoming eponymous debut due out March 10th on Dead Oceans. "Anchors Dropped" is our first taste of the band, and boy, there is some seriously interesting stuff going on here. The urgent vocals, the harmonizing guitar riffs, the playful interludes, the clamorous build. Yet, refreshingly all these compelling elements blend in a cohesive manner, making us excited and intrigued for what comes next.

Blast From The Past : Chi - Sincerity is a Boy Called Del

I think this will be perhaps the one and only time that i manage to blog about something that isn't already out there, so I best make it good (doubt it though), so who were 'Chi' then? Well as far as the Internet seems to say, they never existed, or at least i can't find anything, even with my amazing powers of hunting. I think they were originally called Chicane, but had to change their name after threatening lawsuits from the dance band with the same name. They were a three piece, who hailed from Edinburgh (I think), there's a bit of punk and pop in there, but it's hard to pigeon hole them as there so many different influences in there. I saw them a couple of times back in the heady days of 1998,supporting both Idlewild and China Drum, both times they really impressed me, sadly though they never really caught on and soon vanished off my radar, never to be seen again. I like to think of them sunning it up somewhere in California, or perhaps they are serving you fries in Mackers, who knows.
Anyway, check out 'Afterburners' (below), the opening track which builds up to a screaming crescendo, then switches gear again into a catchy guitar melody, pure class. Have a listen and see what you think.

PS this album reminds me of a guy a I went to uni with, who me and my mate Jamie befriended, unfortunately we couldn't understand him too well, so we didn't actually manage to work out his name until second year. So that's a whole year of being friends with the guy, yet not knowing his name, i think he sussed us in the end, probably why we haven't seen him in years. Oh yeah and his name was Chi!

Vile Vile Vile

'The Sunday Express which recently ran a front page 'scoop' in its Scottish edition which amounted to nothing more than an outrageous character assassination on the kids who survived the Dunblane massacre - now 18 - which involved an Express journalist raiding their personal Facebook/Bebo pages for photos and reports of them doing what every 18 year old does - drinking, partying etc etc - and then accusing them of disrespecting those who died in the schoolroom shooting.

It was pretty low journalism, even by the Express's standards, but the growing outraged response to the piece has had very little coverage outside the blogosphere, possibly because the Express's rivals are aware that they too are increasingly reliant on scandal and outrage based stories to boost their flagging circulations and that, with budgets slashed, and proper investigations into real scandals far too expensive to undertake, the hyping of such non-stories based almost exclusively on web research is becoming more common.

Still, few have stooped as low as this Express story. Key players in the blogosphere are mounting a campaign to demonstrate their disapproval of this kind of journalism, and comedy writer Graham Linehan outlines that campaign here' - CMU Mailout

Peter, Bjorn and John - Living Thing

Rain-sodden romanticism and drums that crash as if returning from a break in Ultravox's Vienna – Living Thing appears stranded in 1981. While a faithful stab at synth pop, there's nothing on the Swedes' fifth album to match Young Folks and, though more coherent, it lacks the eclecticism that made 2006's Writer's Block so appealing. - the Guardian

Is it just me or does the block capital thing not make you feel like they're shouting at you, I thought it was just old people that couldn't work the caps lock button that did that. Anyhow, enough of the waffling, FOUND hail from Edinburgh, yup another band from the Capital, Glasgow's crown as the indie capital of Scotland seems to be slipping pretty fast. What do they sound like, erm dunno really, bit Beta Band-esq I guess. This EP was issued as a way of earning them some funds to gout to SXSW, as they're out there already I guess it must have helped, but if you do genuinely like what you hear, do them and you a favour and invest some of your hard earned pennies.

Another new Festival in Glasgow (23/05/09)

So last year Glasgow got it's own version of the Camden Crawl, with the Sauchiehall Crawl, and now two more have jumped on the bandwagon/blatantly just nicked the idea. Hinterland was the first and now we have the 'Stag & Dagger' festival, which is basically the same set up as Hinterland, except it's only a tenner (with no booking fee) and it's on a Saturday (Hinterland is on a Thu & Fri - not much use to folk who have to work for a living). The venues being used are the Art School, the Captains Rest, the Admiral, Stereo, the Classic Grand and Nice n Sleazys, all pretty spread out then, so it might be an idea to plan ahead if you want to see any of the bigger bands, as Stereo to the Captains Rest isn't exactly a 2 minute saunter away. As for the line up, it looks not bad, but then again I would say that as it has the Twilight Sad down.
So here's the line-up (copied & pasted)

COLD WAR KIDS, THE MAE SHI, CURSIVE, TWILIGHT SAD, ABE VIGODA, ANDREW WEATHERALL, MAPS, JAMES YUILL, RUSKO, N-TYPE, WILD BEASTS, FILTHY DUKES, , DAN BLACK, PHANTOM BAND, MICACHU AND THE SHAPES, VIVIAN GIRLS, MARINA & THE DIAMONDS, TELEPATHE, DUCHESS SAYS, THE JOY FORMIDABLE, DANANANANAYKROYD.

MAGISTRATES (DJ SET), SOY UN CABALLO, HIGH RANKIN, N-TYPE, TOMB CREW, DJ SLUGZ, ED-DL, MOODIE, MAXMILLION, WE HAVE BAND, YOUR TWENTIES, PLUGS, TRAILER TRASH TRACYS, EX LOVERS, LET'S WRESTLE, TUBELORD, THE VIRGIN PASSAGES, MALE BONDING, ARCH M, YOUNG TURKS, YOUNG & LOST, PURE GROOVE, CASPER C, GIRLCORE, DE DE MOUSE, 80 KIDZ, RIDDIM SAUNTER, TUCKER, ME MY HEAD, THE SPOLKESTRA, AGASKODO TELIVEREK, ARTHUR DELANEY, ME MY HEAD, UNGDOMSKULEN, TROUBLE RECORDS

Apparently not all of these bands are playing in Glasgow, but the ever so helpful website doesn't say which ones, oh and it runs from 6pm - 12am, sounds a lot more fun than Hinterland in my opinion.

Introducing - That's the Spirit

Way back in October of last year Line of Best Fit wrote a gushing review of 'That's the Spirit's debut album 'Staying Places', at the time I searched high and low for the album online to no avail. Then nearly ordered it from Canada (where they're from), then as with most new sparkly things that catch my eye it was soon forgotten. That was until one day i was flicking through some Myspace post and there was an offer of a free copy of the album, free P&P and no questions asked, needless to say as a man who likes his freebies i jumped at the chance, and was very kindly sent a copy, all the way across the pond no less. My only regret was that i hadn't actually invested some hard cash and bought this album when it first came out, as the LoBF reviews were pretty much spot on. now how would I describe them? feck knows I'm mince at that kind of thing, my usual thing is to write something like indie pop, but that's a bit of a cop out, all i know is that i really love this album and I hope that you do too. Listen on their Myspace, realise that it's great, then download the album and admit that you were chuffed that i let you in on the act.
