Frightened Rabbit are recording a special session on the London Eye today and will play a special intimate gig previewing new material at the London Lexington on November 6th before touring their new single in November and December including dates with Gomez and Modest Mouse and a sold-out Christmas show at the ABC1 in Glasgow.

Introducing - Cast of the Capital
For me Cast of the Capital take me back to a time in mid-90's when I was still relatively youthful and care free, so when I heard their EP 'Rotten Kids and Haversacks' I was instantly hooked. Now I know that Bob didn't enjoy them as much as I did, but hey each to their own, there's pletny of stuff that we don't quite see eye to eye on, but the world would be a dull place if we all thought the same thing. Anyway, as per usual I am rambling.
Hailing from Aberdeen, Cast of the Capital can best be described as a sugary indie pop that just makes you want smile. Their recent EP contains 5 tracks, which were recorded and mixed in July 2009 by Robin Sutherland, (Dundee, UK) who has worked with the likes of Stapleton, Tellison and Jacob’s Stories. The tracks were then mastered by Dave Collins in Los Angeles. Steve from the band recetnly took some time out to answer a few questions for me...

Would you care to introduce yourselves?
Yeah, sure! My name is Steve Morris and I play bass guitar for Cast Of The Capital – an Aberdeen bases Indie Rock Band. Or maybe it is more Indie Pop, I don’t know! Somewhere between the two I think. I play alongside my brother Matt who writes the songs, sings and plays the guitar. We are joined by Ally Naylor who plays drums, and Jamie Watt on guitar. We’re all from Aberdeen and continue to live here, as it is rather nice!
How did you come up with the band name?
I am going to have to be clichéd here and say ‘it’s a secret’. The question is: why is it a secret?! I guess I don’t want to spoil the sense of mystery, ha!
What artists would you say have had the biggest influence on the band?
A good mix of Scottish and American bands. The Shins, Frightened Rabbit, Death Cab For Cutie, Stapleton and Rogue Wave have all been a huge inspiration. Not only their music, but they all seem like such nice people, and we dream of having a career similar to theirs! Each one of us is really into at least one of those bands. It’s pretty cool as we all have similar-ish tastes in music, but still different enough to make writing songs interesting.
Favourite venue (played/would like to play)?
I have had really fun gigs in Snafu (Aberdeen) and The Room (Inverness). The Dirty Hearts Club, which is held in Snafu in Aberdeen, always has a great vibe and usually gets great bands. I would love to play at the Barrowlands in Glasgow. Since we saw The Shins and Death Cab play there a number of years ago, it has been one of our all time ambitions to play there!!
Have you any plans to go ahead and make a full album?
We are starting to think about writing for an album. We are taking a little break from touring during the winter to focus on writing some new songs. Matt has some really exciting ideas for different types of songs – poppy ones, darker and more obscure ones. I think it will be difficult to decide on which songs to include and which direction to take the record, as a whole, in. But I am looking forward to it so much.
If the answer to the above is yes...Then would you be looking at doing this with Kittiwake?
It is genuinely really hard to answer that question! The chaps from Kittiwake are among the friendliest, most committed and enthusiastic people we have ever met. To have them show such a keen interest in our band is really great. The plan for the moment is to see how the EP gets on over the next wee while, and to see where next year takes us. But anything is possible!!
If you could support one band living/dead who it would be?
Living – I am not going to beat around the bush here. Death Cab For Cutie. I could mention other bands to try and disguise my obsession with them, but I don’t think it’d be right to hide the truth!!
Dead – Johnny Cash. I have only really begun to take a real interest in his music and career. But I definitely find him inspiring. I love reading about the old times – hitting the road in an old beat up van, finding little towns to play a rock show in, dressing in your finest dark and moody attire and taking to the town hall stage at night.
Are there any local bands you would recommend I check out?
Yeah sure! Local to Aberdeen – Indian Red Lopez. Those are some talented fellows indeed! Remind me a little of Radiohead. Local to Scotland – Trapped In Kansas, Pensioner and Barn Owl. We have been lucky enough to tour with a couple of them, and really hope to organise something with the others.
Where and when can we next see you playing live?
In Scotland you can catch us playing in Stirling Uni at night on the 5th November then in Snafu in Aberdeen on the 12th November. We are then hoping to add a couple more English shows to our schedule, around them time of our gig in Buffalo Bar in London.

Noise, zombies and lacerated limbs

Introducing - The French Wives
Today sees the release of the debut single by the excellent French Wives, a band who I have been enjoying for quite a few few months now since they were featured on
Under the Radar. They are also a band that got me into shit with my better half, you try explaining to the one you love most, why you have been googling foreign married ladies and see how far you get, before you realise that you're just not going to win.
Anyway, I digress you might remember the French Wives from my Rockness post earlier in the year, well now the Glasgow quintet have released their debut single, 'Halloween/Dogfight'. Out now on Glasgow label, Instinctive Racoon Records, who boast a roster including Ross Clark, Washington Irvine and Three Blind Wolves. Their songs remind of early eighties pop, with a definite nod to Postcard Records in there. I have posted a stream so you can listen to both of the songs, it should give you a much better idea of how good this band really are.
The single is available to do download from all of your usual sites, with a limited run of physical copies available in various independant Scottish record stores (Avalanche and the like). I have high hopes for these guys, remember the name, and hope that your other half does too or you might have some explaining to do.

Help Ma Boab, It's The Weekly 62-Word Review #2
The Holloways - Jukebox Sunshine (single)
Lyrically inane, rancid arsejuice with so little substance it cannot be scientifically classed as anything. Soulless, spineless, knoberific wankery to be filed alongside Little Man Tate and The Paddingtons under ‘Mindless Drivel‘. Unadultered oxterpish that should be left in a vault deep in the earth for future generations to laugh at how bad we were at being humans. An unflushable jobby.
Sadly, The Holloways play King Tuts on Nov. 9th.
X-Lion Tamer - I Said Stop (Single)
Wasn’t too keen on this initially. I’m not a massive fan of the whole Pet Shop Boys - style vocoder thing but as the day went on I realised that I had the chorus lodged firmly inside my skull on a permanent loop. It’s grown on me massively since, one of the best out and out pop songs I’ve heard for ages.
X-Lion Tamer play 13th Note on Oct 30th.
Cast Of The Capital - Rotten Kids & Haversacks EP
A good EP, this, if a little bland at times. Reminiscent of Teenage Fanclub and The Magic Numbers. Standout tracks are Tree Sleep - a country-ish pop number which morphs into something a little darker, in the Blanche vein - and Comiston Springs - a jangly, Songs From Northern Britain-esque track perfect for a Californian road trip in a Lincoln Capri convertible.
Cast Of The Capital have shitloads of gigs coming up, check them all out on their myspace.
Peenko vs Ambulances
Earlier in the year Marc Riley had Ambulances in the studio to do a session for him, although I hadn't heard of them before, I decided to record the session, mainly out of a sense of patriotism for a Scottish band. I am so glad that I did, as they recorded one of the best sessions that I had heard all year

What artists would you say have had the biggest influence on the band?
velvet underground, beatles, wu-tang, townes van zandt, avalanches, super furry animals, the whole nuggets garage thing, piles of reggae... the list is endless. check out our twitter page, we're always putting up tunes and videos of bands we love on there.
You hail from all over Fife, how does that work on a practical level for getting together to practice/record?
its not that bad really, maybe when someone has a shift change or some overtime but nothing different from any other band.
You don’t seem to play all that often, so where and when can people see you playing live? the greenside in leslie on the 27th of November is our next gig but apart from that i don't really know. sara is in her last year at art school so its a bit mad for her right now so we don't want it commit to more than we can manage. however, that should all change next year and hopefully we can play most places that will have us.

Both their producers just got in touch out of the blue and asked if we would do a session. we really don't know how they found out about us but they did and we're well chuffed that they did. super surreal things happen to you all the time when you're in a band. we were walking in to do the marc riley session and met mark radcliffe and stuart maconie. when we finished our session we looked through to the control room and hooky was checking us out, he even offered to produce our next album. we then went to our hotel and drank all night with shane mcgowan (with his dentist), marc bolan's girlfriend and the wee guy from auf wiedersehen, pet. we were all playing our songs on kitchen spoons till the small hours. mad!!
Your new album was recorded and mixed ‘legendary’ producer Kramer, how did that come about?
he also just got in touch with us out of the blue on our myspace site and said he'd do anything to work with us. we thought either he must be a lunatic or the whole thing was just some joker having us on. we started to skype each other and realised it was no joker nor was he mental, result! he was over within a few weeks with nothing more than a wee bag o clothes, a laptop, a 1930s ribbon microphone, a teapot and his genius. he left 10 days later with 15 songs in the bag and a big crazy smile on his boat. spooky thing was we had sean flynns image of the crucified mickey moose in mind for the cover of the album and the 1930s mic kramer had, belonged to walt disney at some point. apparently he (walt, not kramer) recorded the first utterings of donald duck on it.
On a similar not, you recently supported Damo Suzuki (of Can fame), how did that come about? And are you fans of Can?
again, it was some promoter dude sending us a message over Myspace. we were already booked in for marc riley the night before in Manchester so it was no problem to then just nip down to london and do the gig. and yes we love can - you really shouldn't get to play music until you've heard the first 3 can albums. you can't compare them to any other band apart from maybe the fall. everyone has a can element to their music now though haven't they? haha! think i'll put a liebezeitian paradiddle in the middle eight, just to give it an edge. hehe!
Is this something that you would like to make a living out of?
we'd all love to make a living out of music but we don't make music with the intention of making money unlike almost everyone.
As you the album was a self- release, how hard was it for you to go about dealing with all the various aspects such as costs, promotion, etc?
getting the money was the only problem but we worked and saved hard. we found out what everything would cost us and then we just went for it. we couldn't pay for any promotion or spend very much on the actual packaging but in a time when people say albums are dead we're doing okay. if record companies were fairer to their customers and their bands i don't think illegal downloading would be a problem at all. everyone likes a nice product not some cheap imitation with scant information. most sensible music lovers know now though it's best to buy straight from the band that way some coked-up mountain climber in london isn't profiting off of it.
Have you started to attract attention from any labels and is this something that you would welcome?
we've talked to publishing companies and a few record company bosses have said very nice things to us. however, they haven't taken us out to lunch yet.
Favourite venue (played/would like to play)?
would have to be the Barras.
Are there any bands you would recommend I check out?
found, withered hand, davy sausage, slacker, the junipers, dusty stray, flavor crystals
Lastly, what’s next for Ambulances?
waiting to hear from the scottish arts council to find out if they're going to fund our next album with steve mason and kramer. in the meantime just writing and recording.

Peenko Blog Is One Year Old Today
So who'd have thought it, Peenko Blog is officially a year old today.
To say that things have changed round here over this past year would be a pretty big understatement, to be honest i only really started this blog up to try and get some of mates to listen to new things by sharing albums, which soon escalated way out of control. Now I am not quite sure where I am going with it, all I know is that I still really enjoy doing it. I have discovered loads of great local artists and plenty of other stuff that I doubt I would have if it hadn't been for this. I've also got to meet a whole load of really nice folk, who have either helped me out, introduced me to new things or even just visited the blog and said nice things; all of which I have really appreciated. I was going to sit and name check a fair few folk, but as I started to write it all out it sounded far to much like a fecking Oscars acceptance speech, basically if you are reading this thank you.
Right that's enough of the sucking up your arses, here's the part you might actually appreciate, to celebrate the big day I have had a run of 100 badges made up, unfortunately they haven't come through yet, otherwise I would stick a picture up to show you what they look like.

Introducing - Chris Bradley
It's been a while since we've heard anything from Aberfeldy, apart from last years single 'Come On, Claire', things have been pretty quiet from the Edinburgh five piece. So it came as a nice surprise to find out that Chris Bradley (keyboardist/guitarist/singer) was putting out some solo material on 17 Second Records (as run by Ed from the 17 Seconds blog). His debut single, 'Bored Little Rosie’/'The Man I Love' came out on Monday and I highly recommended that you check him out. If you are looking for something similar to Aberfeldy then this probably isn't it, but don't let that put you off as he has one of the most beautiful vocals I have heard all year. His voice reminds me more of classic singer son writers from the 60's or 70's, his songs seem to fit the descent into winter almost perfectly. If you think I am talking my usual pish then have a listen to the stream of 'The Man I Love', below.
Chris Bradley's sophomore album, tentatively titled 'Go On My Son', is set for a November release, with his debut album 'Voices', previously released on a limited edition CD, getting are-issue in the new year.
If you want to catch Chris in the flesh he is playing at the 13th Note on the 30th of October as part of the 17 Seconds takeover night, which also features the X-Lion Tamers and the Dirty Cuts. I was keen to go to this, but sadly can't as I'll be in the East Neuk of Fife, at the Fence Halloween Party. I'd also suggest you bookmark the 17 Seconds Blog as it's a good read and an excellent place to find out about new Scottish bands.
