Oxjam's Glasgow Takeover - Early Bird Tickets on Sale Now

Earlier on this year Glasgow had two festivals which ran all over the city,
Hinterland and Stag and Dagger, the concept of which is that yu buy a wristband which gives you access to various venues all over the City. Now Oxfam have taken the concept on for their annual musical fundraiser, Oxjam . Taking place over the weekend 24th & 25th of October, Oxjam Glasgow takes over 15 Glasgow's music venues, with a line up that boasts 150 great local bands (as listed below), including Sons & Daughters no less. Early Bird weekend tickets have just gone on sale at the very reasonable price of £6.00 plus booking fee (a percentage of which will go to Oxfam), with over 50 out of the 100 early bird tickets gone already I'd suggest that you get in there quick.

The Phantom Band announce Christmas show in Glasgow

Another day, another great Christmas show announced in Glasgow. This time it's the brilliantly bonkers Phantom Band, they will play the Arches in Glasgow on Saturday the 12th of December. Support on the evening comes from Lord Cut Glass, which pretty makes it a no-brainer, having been blown away by them earlier in the week this promises to be one of the best gigs you'll see all year. Peenko vs Kid Canaveral

Round these parts (i.e. me) there is a lot of love for Kid Canaveral, whether it's pop-tastic tunes, or the fact the Davie their singer put up with me rambling pure pish at him at last years Malcolm Middleton Christmas party I'm not sure. I guess a bit of both.
Anyway, I digress, fucking love them no matter what my reasoning may well be, for me 'Smash Hits' is one of the best songs I've come across this year (go on treat yourself), so having stalked David for several months now I managed to persuade him and the lovely Kate to answer some questions for me, ie they do all the hard work and I take the credit....

Would you care to introduce yourselves?

Hello. We are Kid Canaveral. We are David, Kate, Rose, Scott and sometimes
Ali.

Who does the song writing in the band?

David: It started off as just me and then Kate started to come in with whole songs too. Now that we’re in the recording studio so often, we’ve all started to contribute bits and bobs sometimes. I wrote quite a few of the songs on the singles and a couple from the album in various Portakabins around the Lothians.

Kate: I’ve written at least three songs in the last few months which doesn’t sound like much but is rather prolific for me. I usually average about one every couple of years!

What artists would you say have had the biggest influence on the band?

Kate: I love 80s indie-pop – stuff like The Smiths and Kirsty MacColl. I’ve not really progressed to be honest. I work for a second hand record website so I’m kind of stuck in the past…

David: I love Kirsty, too. The Smiths, R.E.M., Pixies and The Cure is probably what I’d take from the 80s as major influences. I love a lot of indiepoppy bands from the 80s and 90s too, but I’m not going to descend into a big list. Yet. A lot of American and Scottish indie, too, (Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Grandaddy, Nada Surf, Trash Can Sinatras, King Creosote., Belle and Sebastian, Idlewild, Mull Historical Society) and stuff with its tongue never far from its cheek..

Kate: Actually, I’ve had time to think and I do like some stuff from this century! I’m really into Grandaddy and Belle & Sebastian too, plus more alt-country-americana stuff – Ryan Adams, Neko Case, Wilco, Mountain Goats.

You are very much involved in whole Fence Collective set up, how did that come about?

Kate: We all met Johnny (Pictish Trail) at university in St Andrews and have all been good mates since. I live in Anstruther and help run the Fence shop and organising stuff for their festival (the Homegame). We’ve played the last four Homegames and it’s always amazing fun.

David: Kate and I took over the running of the Indie club night at the Union when Johnny abdicated from that post. Johnny set up a Fence stall at each of the nights during our tenure.

Your new EP ‘Left and Right’ comes out next month, which you’ve chosen to release on cassette (and download). What was the thinking behind that?

David: Well, we’ve not released anything this year, so we’ve recorded three tracks for an E.P., so people know we’re still working away. The lead track ‘Left and Right’ seemed like a good introduction to the album, and we wanted to try something a wee bit different on the b-sides, seeing as we’re still writing the last part of the album. One of them is a cover of “Long in the Tooth” by The Pictish Trail. It’s a *wee* bit different…It also gives an excuse to tour. We’re starting in Edinburgh and then we’re off down through England and Wales. Plus, we’ve already had 4 vinyl singles, so cassette was the next logical (extinct) step… It has got a wrap-around case and the idea was to produce a physical format with a nice bit of artwork (from the very talented Eve McConnachie, again) for those who still like that sort of thing, whilst providing them with a high quality digital version via an attached code.

Kate: The cassette is a bit of a gimmick I guess – it’s just for fun really and it’s nice to have a physical something to be able to sell with proper art work, downloads just aren’t the same!

You have been recording your debut album for a while now, how’s it coming along?

David: It’s not been that long! (Peenko - I do seem to remember hassling you about this back in April, and April was fecking ages ago!)We had our first session in May this year and have been back in and out since. I think it’s sounding good. It’s a bit more adventurous than the stuff we’ve released before. I mean it’s not Minimalist French House or anything, but we’ve had more time to spend on it so we’re trying some things. It’s still pop music. We’ve got a part-time fifth member in with us at the moment on keys and viola. Her name is Ali and she’ll be joining us at shows when she can.

Kate: I’m really excited about the album – I guess it has been a long time coming but we really want it to be good… it’s been nice being able to spend time tweaking stuff as previously it sometimes felt like a bit of a mad rush to get things finished.

David: Yeah, it’s definitely great now to be able to take stuff away and listen to it over the space of a couple of weeks, think: “I don’t like how we’ve done this” or “maybe if we did this like that” and change it.

Basically, when can I get my mucky paws on it?

David: It’s out in Spring, next year. But I imagine you’ll get one of the promos a wee bit before then… There’ll also be a single to promote it, released just before it. This will obviously have a couple of remixes or b-sides or something so we’re not releasing exactly the same thing that’ll be on the album. We’ve also got a Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanzaa/Mid-Winter Festival present up our sleeves…

Are you planning to release it on your own label (Straight to Video)? Fence? Someone else? Or D all of the above?

David: At the moment it’s going to be on Straight to Video. There’s no point waiting around for someone else to release a record for you these days. We’ve got some great people we work with, for our press and for our booking and obviously some very useful (and lovely) friends at Fence, as far as advice and support goes. Unless we get a great offer, we’re much better doing it this way.

You have had quite a high turnover of drummers in your time, ever thought about just buying a drum machine to save yourself the hassle?

David: We have about 2 or 3 between us… But a drum machine can’t carry things. Dan leaving was a huge loss as we’re very good friends, but we were never going to give up on the band. We’re all still friends of course, and to prove that’s not just a tired cliché, we’re all going to his wedding next month. Clarke left because of his caffeine addiction and is now in a Swiss Rehab clinic. Lovely chap, though. Scott our newest, and hopefully permanent, drummer is someone we’ve known for years. We’ve rescued him from Metal.

Kate: It’s a bit of a shame that we have no dramatic break up/falling out stories – witnessed an amazing band fight outside our rehearsal studio yesterday and I thought we really were missing out…. we’re obviously just not rock n roll enough.

David: I didn’t realise they were a band. It was like dialogue from an Irvine Welsh Novel, but whinier.

Favourite venue (played/would like to play)?

David: To play? The Barrowlands. Have played? Probably Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline (it’s huge and ornate) or The Caves in Edinburgh. The Cavern in Exeter also made quite an impression on me, actually, and I loved the Luminaire in London.

Kate: I would very much like to play Glastonbury… if that counts as a venue. I’m not fussy about which stage! I think I’d have to go for The Caves as well for places we’ve played, it’s got such an ace atmosphere.

Lastly, can you recommend a band(s) for me to check out?

David: Not that I mean to kiss your arse or anything, but from reading your blog, I’ve noticed that you’re going to very similar gigs to me and listening to the same sort of new stuff. I would say go and see The Kabeedies if you get the chance. They do really energetic indiepop. They are also very nice people.

Kate:I would check out Laura Gibson, she’s a folky singer/ songwriter from Portland, Oregon. The album I have of hers is a couple of years old but I love it…Hands In Pockets is the tune to check out. If you were looking for live recommendations then I guess this isn’t too helpful… she does get over here occasionally though.

Kid Canaveral launch their new E.P, "Left and Right" with a show at The Bowery in Edinburgh on Saturday the 3rd of October. Special guests for the evening will be Cancel The Astronauts, and Popup, with the Come On Gang spinning some tunes too. Malcolm Middleton's Long Dark Night

No matter how much you deny it, Christmas is a coming, which means end of the year gig time, so there goes all my Christmas present money being pissed away on concerts (sorry Nic).
After last years Burst Noel, Mr Middleton returns for another wee Scottish shindig, this time at Oran Mor on Thursday the 10th of December. No details on support acts or the like, but we can but hope that there are party games, plus there's the advantage of not having to stoat about Govan at one in the morning trying to get a taxi. As he's threatening to take his solo work into hiatus after he's finished promoting Waxing Gibbous (one of the best albums I have heard all year), then you'd be best getting your tickets soon.

Phantom Band to support Frightend Rabbit on mini Scottish Tour

If you had the chance to dream up your fantasy bill for a gig, then what would you choose? At this moment in time I'd love to see Frightened Rabbit and the Phantom Band play on the same bill. My fairy godmother must have been listening as the two are teaming up for a mini Scottish tour in November and December. "Following on from last year’s fantastic event with Davy Scott we thought we must ask another guest artist to curate their very own take on the festive season.
So the exciting prospect of having King Creosote bring together some of his friends to share their take on the festive period is a Christmas must do pop occasion.
During the early nineties the skuobhie dubh orchestra was one of Scotland’s top alt. folk bands, blending bluegrass and skiffle beats with homespun yarns about Fife-wide fame and fortune.
The sdo disbanded sometime around 1996, but the various members have long since played a part in Fife’s fence collective, with acts such as king creosote, pip dylan and the pictish trail. the sdo were dragged out of early retirement last year to play at the big tent festival in Falkland, and will continue this revelatory return to form with a festive appearance at the Tolbooth alongside a few well worn but friendly fence collective faces."

Sunday nights, for me the worst night of the week, that impending feeling of doom at the thought of having to go into work the next day can be a real killer. Sunday the 27th of September will be different though, as Martin John Henry, Lord Cut-Glass and Rick Redbeard (the Phantom Band) are playing a free gig at Bar Gandolfi as part of the Merchant City Festival. The gig should be pretty special in this intimate venue, withAlun Woodward performing songs from his excellent debut album under his Lord Cut Glass moniker, MJ Henry showcasing some of his new post-De Rosa material, and Rick 'Redbeard' Anthony adding his stripped back folk sounds to what promises to be a belter of an evening.

Frightened Rabbit Return with new single in November

After announcing at last months sold out Edinburgh gig, that their next single would be 'Living in Colour' the Frabbit boys (or perhaps FatCat) have had change of heart and gone with 'Swim Until You Can't See Land' as the lead single from their forthcoming album. The release date of the single has been set as the 16th of November, and it's apparently boast "a stunning string arrangment from labelmate, Teutonic ivory-botherer, Hauschka" (me neither).

Personally, I really like 'Swim..', but I can't help but feel a little disappointed at this announcement, something 'new' would have been nice. Oh and the B-side is going to be 'Fun-Stuff', aka 'Last Tango in Brooklyn', so it looks like we will have to wait until next year to hear something new from the boys. In the meantime here's a video of them playing Fast Blood at the Monolith Festival.

If you fancy catching them live then the are playing the the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival on Wednesday 21st Edinburgh at the HMV Picturehouse, tickets are a measly £5.
There's also another date for a the Scottish Royal Variety performance in Glasgow, which costs around £60-70, which features names such as Tam Cown and the Sugababes, which should be an interesting evening....

Earlier in the week the lineup of the of Homecoming Live was announced, I had toyed with the idea of posting about it, but to be honest I found the whole event so ill thought out it didn't deem worthy of inflicting upon the good folk that come on here. Taking place at the SECC on the weekend of St. Andrews Day the event is supposed to be a celebration of Scottish Music, so why on earth the organisers reckon that a stage featuring the old irrelevant codgers stage and the random as fuck stage, seriously King Creosote on the same bill as the View, which smart arse came up with that idea. Bugger ,I have succumbed and posted about it, and I really didn't mean or want to, honestly I didn't. No seriously, honest, cross my heart, but as it's the giant elephant in corner of the room that I can't avoid. There is a glimmer of light that might seem more appealing than being surrounded by thousands View fans (or neds as they are more commonly known), and that is the rather cracking alternative that is being offered up at King Tuts, which includes The Pastels, the 1990s, Sergeant and We Were Promised Jetpacks. Sons & Daughters added to the WeeChill Lineup

Sons & Daughters have announced their first Glasgow show since their headlining show at the Hinterland Festival back in May, strangely though they've been added to the line up of The Wee Chill. The predominantly dance orientated shindig, is having its second outing of the year at Queens Park's Glasshouse on Saturday the 26th of September, from 6pm -12am with aftershow parties taking place at the Sub Club and the Admiral, tickets are £22 + £2 b.f. and are available from Ticket Scotland.

Broken Records announce Scottish Tour & EP Re-release

Broken Records are set to digitally release their 'Out On The Water' EP on the 2nd of November, with a tour planned to support it's release. Previously available only at gigs or from the band directly, the EP is definitely worth downloading, I actually prefer it to the album, but hey that's just my opinion, and you know how much that counts for!

The line up for this years Oxjam takeover is starting to take shape, and it's looking pretty good, taking place over the weekend of the 24th and 25th of October, the fundraising event promises a plethora of gigs, with several 'top secret acts' still to be announced.

Introducing - The Lava Experiments

Since starting this blog last year I have been really fortunate to have 'discovered' lots of Scottish bands, every day something new seems to come to my attention. Some good, some not so good, the Lava Experiments would defintely fall into the good category. In this past year I have come across a few bands that seem to have been influenced by the Beta Band, the main two being Django Djano and FOUND, both of whom seem to have taken the poppier influences and made them their own. The Lava boys seem to have taken the darker elements of the Beta band, fused with a blend of Depeche Mode. The first time I listened to them was on a hazy hungover Saturday, their ambient chilled out sounds nursed me through the pain better than a roll & sausage with can of Irn Bru. Take for example the opening track on their new EP, 'Piecing Memories Together' (listen to it below) the initial build of the song makes you feel like your on some kind of lift off into the unkown, before building slowly into a dream like ambient rollercoaster of fun. Quite simply, wow!

The electronic Glaswegian three-piece originally started out as the solo project of main man, Fraser Rowan, they already have a few releases under their belts, including self released album ' Wavelength' (which you can download for free from the link below) and their 'Solar' EP.
Since 2008, they have been working hard on new material, undertaking a project to release three EP's entitled the 'Blackbody' Volumes. with Vol.1 being release in May of that year.

Vol II, the second EP of the trilogy came out on Monday there, limited to just 100 physical copies, this Ep won't about long. If you fancy getting your hands on a copy then you might still be able to buy a copy here, or you could get your glad rags on and head down to Sleazys tomorrow night for the EP launch (Friday the 4th of September), tickets are a measly £5 if you go here, or alternatively you can stump up £6 at the door. If you can't make it and you leave it too late to buy a physical copy, then you can purchase digital copies from iTunes, Amazon, Napster etc.
