Introducing - The Darien Venture

Picture taken from here

When I started this blog I really didn't know where I was going with it, and to be honest I still don't, that's half the fun I guess. One thing I never really imagined would happening was that I would actually get other people posting on here, so when I decided to let Bob loose on my 'baby' a few months back I did feel as if I was opening Pandora's Box, hey I'm still the captain of this ship, except now I am sailing this ship with the aid of some people who can actually write coherently.

The latest addition to the crew is Susie, who, if you kick about here often enough will realise that she is a fellow Frabbiteer or Bunny Boiler as my wife calls us. For a while now she's been banging on about some great new bands that i know not a lot about, so she's very kindly taken up my suggestion that she writes something for me. For her first (hopefully there will be more) post she has decided to an introduction to the Darien Venture, enjoy....

Great bands can lead to great bands. This is true of how I came to know and appreciate The Darien Venture as much as I do. Having been a fan of Trapped in Kansas since they supported Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin last September (back in the We Are days) I always on the lookout for the chance to catch them again. And in a very musical mood on March 30th, I made a last minute decision and took off from Stirling to the Captain’s Rest (the same place I would be for a fair few hours the next day as well) to see Trapped in Kansas play with The Darien Venture and Out of Samsara. I was a little aware of Darien’s music via myspace but at this gig they were amazing, the crowd loved them and so did I. I caught both Trapped in Kansas and Darien Venture again just over 2 weeks later in the same venue for their joint EP launch and by then I was a solid fan of both. And apparently I’m recognizable since at this gig both bands knew who I was.

Hailing from Ayr and made up of friends and university chums, The Darien Venture do exactly what they say on the tin (or in this case, the myspace) – “Expect volume and good times.” They will be recording their first EP in October and can only go from strength to strength. And as I say to everyone I tell about them, they have a song about Back to the Future so you really can’t go wrong.

The Darien Venture are playing The Mill @ The Oran Mor on September 24th with Atlas Skye – Free tickets are available here

And are playing Stirling University’s Union’s Transmission with Trapped in Kansas on November 12th. Free for students and non-students can be signed in (one each student). So you better find yourself a Stirling Uni student if you want to come along to what is gonna be a fun night.

Introducing - Get Back Guinozzi!

When I think of FatCat's I tend to be pretty narrow minded, to be blatantly honest I've only ever really showed nay interest in their trio of Scottish bands. That was until I listened to the newest addition to their stable, Get Back Guinozzi!, in a word 'wow'! Summer might not have arrived North of the Border, so this dreamy summer pop might just do the trick.
The 5-piece are based between London and the South of France, they're just about to launch their debut single and they put a massive smile on my face every time that I listen to them. That's pretty much all you need to know, I could list off influences and make comparisons, but quite frankly I sometimes find that trying to pigeonhole a band just makes me less interested, so I'll leave it to you to decide. My advice would be that in the shittiest of summers they are my little ray of sunshine that makes everything feel that little bit better.

Get Back Guinozzi! launch their debut single 'Low Files Tropical' next month (the 14th to be exact), with the band's debut album, ‘Carpet Madness’, following on the 19th of October.
No UK shows have been announced as of yet, but as the saying goes, watch this space.

Have a listen to the single below, let me know if it floats your boat, if it does then go forth and spend some of those hard earned pennies here.

Martin John Henry (ex-De Rosa) announces some dates

I am not sure if I emphasised enough how gutted I was when De Rosa split earlier this year, having only really 'discovered' them at the start of the year, it was like getting a new toy for Christmas then breaking it on Boxing Day.
Gutted as I was to hear of their demise, it was good to hear that lead singer Martin Henry would continue to make music, of which I have been keeping a keen ear listening to any demos he posted on his Myspace (sounding good it is too). Now he's announced some additional dates to the previously announced Chemikal Underground show in Aberdeen, they are as follows
The Captain's Rest on the 3rd of October, with a provisional date at the Merchant City Festival pencilled in for the 27th of September (TBC).
He's also just taken recorded a cover of ' Because' for 'Abbey Road Now' a 'the Beatles' covers album which is free with this months Mojo Magazine, which you can listen to or download below.

''Fuck Off Bono''

the picture was half inched from here

The Rabbit’s ‘homecoming’ presented me with a slight dilemma, to say the least. On one hand, there was the opportunity to see two cracking support bands in the shape of The Moth & The Mirror and Meursault. On the other hand, Celtic were playing Arsenal in the most important tie of the new season so far. What was it to be?

On first tonight The Moth & The Mirror. Celtic actually passed the ball around quite nicely at times in the first half I’d say, although never really looking to be too much of a threat to the Arsenal goal. N’Guemo in particular played well, as did Aiden McGeady, a persistent nuisance to Arsenal down the right wing. We were unfortunate to lose the first goal in the lead up to half-time due to an ugly deflection and caused the heads to go down a little.

And now Meursault. Celtic seemed to lose a little of the optimism they had held throughout the first half. Passes were off the mark, first touches were shite, second touches were tackles and confidence was low. In fact, the only danger to the Arsenal goal was Gallas’ sliding clearance from Fortuné’s threatening low cross. A similar low cross at the other end was turned into Artur Boruc’s goal by The Heid himself, who’s had an horrendous three weeks. Finishes 0-2 and it’s time to head to The Queen’s Hall. Feel kinda bad that I missed both support bands but I’m definitely going to see them both in the near future.

For a slightly different experience, my date for the evening (the lovely Peenko himself, although I hope he doesn’t tell his wife about this…) and myself head for the seats upstairs rather than the sweaty crush in front of the stage. Frightened Rabbit kick off with The Modern Leper which is pretty good. One slight downside however, and this continues throughout the set, is the sound. The PA is obviously not designed to fill a hall of this size, and the speakers (similar to these) are hung facing down onto the crowd below with no care taken to make sure people above would be able to hear properly. This results in the band sounded a wee bit dead and far away, and it’s easy for conversation to take place at normal volume.

To be honest, I wasn’t too impressed by the new songs Steve and Living In Colour, though I rarely am impressed upon hearing something for the first time so there’s absolutely no doubt that they will grow on me. The other newbie, Swim (Until You Can’t See Land) was excellent however. The best song of the night is Backwards Walk which provokes at least a minute of applause at the end. Other highlights are Poke and Keep Yourself Warm which both provoke the usual Frightened Rabbit mass sing-along, with Scott barely having to sing a word of the former.

It’s a good gig although not my favourite by this band. People were raving about it afterwards though, saying that it’s the best gig they’ve ever been to etc but I just didn’t seem to enjoy it as much as others did. The sound definitely put a wee bit of a dampener on it for me, as did the lacklustre performance of Square 9. It’s my favourite Rabbit song but is ruined by the fact that Scott doesn’t appear to sing it any more and simply moans and wails it. This is so much so that you can’t make out individual lyrics and you can’t sing along with him. Sad times. Maybe a wee break from playing it will do the song the world of good, refreshing and rejuvenating it, as Scott sounds sort of bored whilst singing it.

It’s a good night out though, and a very energetic performance by the band. It’s just disappointing that the PA wasn’t up to the job. Not their best either, but maybe I just wasn't in the mood.

Peenko vs The Local Natives

If you have been reading this blog on a regular basis then you should already be aware of the Local Natives, my great white hope for 2009. With their debut album 'Gorilla Manor' already in the bag and a Glasgow date forthcoming in October, I was luck enough to get Taylor from the band to do a wee Q&A for me.

Would you care to introduce yourselves?

Of course. My name is Matt Frazier and I am 1/5 of Local Natives.

How did you come up with the band name?

While recording the album it became clear to us that this band had evolved into something entirely new, with that, we decided to change the name. We threw names around the room for weeks, opinions clashed, and nothing stuck. Finally, Andy came to us with a new idea… Local Natives. Typically when a new name was thrown into the mix, skepticism followed, and the name usually fell by the wayside, but for some reason, this time, Local Natives stuck. It just seemed to fit all too well. Is it blatantly redundant? Yes, but to me, that's part of the beauty of it. We feel that the name completely embodies the nature of this band.

How did you come together as a band?
The 5 of us have been playing together for about 3 years now. Before the name change we were called Cavil at Rest; a band started in high school primarily by Ryan Hahn (guitar, vocals) and Taylor Rice (guitar, vocals). While still in high school, Ryan and Taylor were joined by Kelcey Ayer (keys, vocals, percussion), and after a couple of EPs and a few lineup changes were then joined by Andy Hamm (bass) and myself, Matt Frazier (drums). We played as Cavil at Rest up until the recording our first ever full length (see above).

What artists would you say have had the biggest influence on the band?
You’d probably get five completely different answers if you asked each of us individually, but that’s part of what makes this band what it is; we pull inspiration from all different directions and try to meld it into something cohesive. We’re a vocal band, so naturally we draw inspiration from bands like CSNY or The Zombies, but when it comes to our more tribal, percussive sound, inspiration can be traced to the likes of Animal Collective, Annuals or even Talking Heads.

You released your debut single through Chess Club Records, are there any plans to release anything else with them?
Releasing ‘Sun Hands’ through Chess Club was a great experience. I can’t say we’d be opposed to working with them again somewhere down the line.

Does your debut album ‘Gorilla Manor’ have a UK/US release date yet?
It doesn’t. We’re hoping to release by the end of this year.

As you already have your debut recorded, do you feel more empowered as to which record label you choose to release it through?
I guess you could say we have a leaning as to whom we may be releasing with, but for now, I cannot say. Ah, the anticipation.

You do a cracking cover of the Talking Heads ‘Warning Sign’, are there any plans to include it on the album?
It’s definitely a possibility, but if you had asked me this 12 months ago, I probably would have told you differently. Our original intentions were nowhere near what they are now; it’s funny how this song has become such a constant for us. After working the song out (which, if you listen to the original, resulted in us flipping the song on its head), recording the demo and adding the song to almost every live set, it feels as if the song has become one of our own.

Do all of the band still live together? and does that help you creatively?
We do all currently live together, and I’d say it helps us immensely. This band is like a marriage; we’ve all accepted that. When we’re not fighting over who’s dishes are in the sink or who left the lights on last night, we’re either huddled around our rickety $65 piano working out new material or collaborating on artwork. It’s a beautiful thing really; we keep each other in check.

You have been gaining a lot of buzz on various music blogs, how do you feel about being labeled as a ‘buzz band’?
Initially, I’m intimidated. We want this band to be built up slowly with a solid foundation... Key word: Longevity. It’s really amazing that people have taken a liking to our music and started creating this thing called ‘buzz’, but I also want people to be able to latch on for the long haul and not just listen to us because we might remind them of another band of the moment. At the end of the day, the responsibility of maintaining the quality that creates a career band lies on our shoulders and we can’t wait to prove our worth.

You recently took part in the Daytrotter barn tour, how was that?
The week consisted of two blown bus tires, hiding in corn fields, tomato worms, one sweaty attic, jumping on hay bales, too much PBR to count, playing in caves, and risking our lives on 120-year-old rafters. Needless to say, it was everything I had hoped it would be. We played four barns and one attic… Each of the five shows was special in their own way. The Daytrotter crew really has a great thing on their hands and I can’t wait to see how the future Barnstormers evolve.

You seem to have had your debut finished for quite a while now, have you started writing any new material?
I guess you could say the album is still a work in progress. Since our initial recordings we’ve been bouncing new material around and it’s looking like some of the newer stuff may make it onto the album. For now, I can’t say for sure.

Are there any bands you would recommend I check out?
Wild Beasts. We heard about these guys earlier this year and really took a liking to their sound. Flash forward to SXSW in March; we run into them by chance at one of our shows and it turns out that the feeling is mutual. Their new album ‘Two Dancers’ is definitely worth a listen. The Mother Fucking Reindeer Section!!!!!!!

Right I'm sleepy, got back home at half one last night after venturing over to the east coast to see the Frabbit, good it was too. Bob's promised me a review so I won't say anymore about it. Anyway, as usual before starting to do any work I cleared out my emails, spotted that Snow Patrol were touring. Clyde Auditorium, "fuck that", delete. Mentioned it to a work mate, so I went back and dug it out me trash, so glad I did as after re-reading the email I find out that they're going to be playing Reindeer Section songs. I love the 'Section, their gigs rate as some of the best I have ever been to. so yes I am somewhat excited at the prospect of hearing the songs live again.

Anyway, the gig as on the 30th of November, tickets go on sale to the general public on Thursday 27th August at 9am, although there is a pre-sale for members only, which you can access here. Tickets are pretty pricey though starting at £35 right up to £55, better be good at those prices.

I'll leave you with my all time favourite song, ever.

Spooky goings on in the East Neuk

Details of this years Fence Hallowe'en Party have just been announced, with tickets going on sale as of now. This years shindig takes place on the 30th and 31st of October, with a theme of dead celebrities and how they died. Sounds like a challenge to me, do you go down the road of something distasteful, of course I would. Not sure how Jambo is going to adapt his vampire outfit to fit round that theme. Anyhow, tickets are £30, which seems pretty reasonable to me over, although they are very limited so best not hang about.

Here's the copy n paste part.....

"There will be live music happening on the Friday afternoon, from about 2pm until 6pm. Then there'll be a break, so you can get your dinner and dressed up for our party, which will start at about 8.30pm.

THEN on the Saturday we'll have another afternoon bash, from 2pm onwards - with a special headline performance in the evening from James Yorkston & The Big Eyes Family Players. There'll be a load of other Fence Collective performances, and some guests - line-up details will be disclosed in a couple weeks. There'll be another knees up with DJ's straight after the live music."

Sounds like a great weekend to me, now all I have to do is persuade the wife that she wants to go....

There will be blood ......Lions.chase.tigers

The rather excellent Lions.chase.tigers have announced their first release, 'To Their Blood', it's going to consist of 6 tracks, so I guess you could call that a mini album, right? Or does it fall under the EP categorisation? Perhaps I should stop trying to pigeon hole it, it is what it is.

In celebration of its release the band are playing the ABC2 on Saturday the 3rd of October (that feels like ages away to me), tickets are a measly five pounds, not bad for a Saturday night in the bright lights of Vegas.

The CD itself will be available to purchase at the show for £4.00 but if you are unable to make it on the night, then it you will still be able to purchase a copy from (coming soon) website for a fiver.

More excitingly though the band have made the bold decision to give downloads of the record away for free. In a time when there is much debate about whether or not downloading is killing the industry I see this as being a great way to go. Yes I know there are plenty of folk out there who don't pay for any records, which is fair enough if their conscience is clean fair play to them. Personally I still download a lot of music, but I still prefer to own a tangible product at the end of the day. Downloading for me is no more than the modern day equivalent of Fopp's old 'suck it and see' policy, if I download an album and like it I'll go out there an buy it. Right, I have gone off on a tangent, sorry I was getting a bit carried away with myself there.

Anyway, as the band appreciate that their songs will eventually be leaked out on the web they have decided to put the record up as a free download.

"To Their Blood will also be able to be downloaded from the same website for free… yes, free. A wise man once pointed out that no matter what way you look at it, every piece of music is available online to download for free right now. Why should you have to pay iTunes or any other digital ..service.. for music at a greatly reduced quality? For the same amount of money you can have the finished article in your hands, complete with artwork and high quality audio tracks. Those that actually want to have the CD will buy it, people that want to download music will find it for free… why stop them? All that we ask is that you share some details with us. We will give you the entire mini-album to download for free in exchange for your Name, Address and Email....."

Personally, I feel that for an up and coming band such as LCT this makes perfect sense, gaining as much exposure as they can, whilst still having a product which they can sell to cover costs makes sense. As for track listings there are no details out there yet, fingers crossed they stick 'That Kid Can Sleep' on there, as that is a TUNE!

Prior to the launch night Lions.chase.tigers play a couple of dates this month

20th - King Tuts with There Will Be Fireworks.
22nd - Sneaky Pete’s with Cryover Billionaires & I See Shapes

James Yorkston & Big Eyes Family Players - I Went To Visit The Roses

Introducing - Homework

Edinburgh's Homework have been gathering a fair bit of steam recently, with a slot at this years T in the Park and airplay on Radio Scotland and a cracking debut EP under their belt they are another fine addition to the ever growing number of great bands to emerge from the capital. Seriously what is going on in the East Coast?!
Formed in 2008 the band originally hail from all over the place (Inverness, Mull and Dumfries, to be exact)

Citing their influences from a wide variety of acts including Wilco, The Chemical Brothers, Cinematic Orchestra and Talking Heads, the band could be best described as electronic indie, but then that would be selling them short. On 'All I See' the lead track of their debut EP the band have produced one of the most infectious songs of the year, if you don't believe me then listen to it below.

If this sounds like it'd be right up your street then you can check out their debut EP 'Sleepless Nights' which should be up on iTunes in the next couple of weeks, or alternatively you can buy a physical copy for £3 (+P&P) by messaging the band through their Myspace.

Homework play the GRV Festival in Edinburgh on the 15th of august,
followed by a night at Box in Glasgow on the 16th.

Little Rock Records celebrate their 2nd Birthday by giving us gifts?!

Until this morning I'll be honest I'd never come across Little Rock, that's no slant on their part, just my usual ignorance to things going on in my fair city. I now know that they are a "netlabel based in Glasgow, specialising in free digital download 7inches", see you learn something new every day.
In celebration of their second birthday they've put up 14 new digital download singles available to download for free, yeah that's free, mind how we like free stuff round here

Apparently this takes their back catalogue up to release number 50, not bad for a label which has only been about for two years. Each of the singles come with two tracks and some artwork. To be honest I haven't had a chance to listen to much stuff yet, just what's on their Myspace, but what I have heard I've liked. Billed as the the best of the Scottish alternative elecronica scene, their artists are pretty eclectic, covering 'disco, ambient, breakcore, jazz, techno, wonky hip-hop and more'. It's worth checking out just to find out what 'wonky hip hop' sounds like.
