King Creosote - Coast on By (acoustic session for Clash Music)

The Beta Band - Glastonbury 2000

Perth Music Festival 2009 (2nd-5th July)

With a fair few outdoor festivals going belly up this year, it's encouraging to see that Scottish promoters aren't just lying down and accepting their fate, instead the trend seems to have swayed towards festivals being held within cities, the newest addition to this list is the Perth Music Festival which is due to take place this coming July. The line up has just been announced, the biggest draws for me would have to be We Were Promised Jetpacks & Zoey Van Goey.

Frightened Rabbit - Off the Beaten Tracks Session

Those lovely folk over at Off the Beaten Tracks have just posted their latest session and fuck me it's none other than Scott from Frightened Rabbit, to say I've been looking forward to this one would be the under statement of the year, as I knew it featured one of the new songs he's been demo-ing, and the same song that he gave it's live debut at this years Homegame (although the OtBT's might dispute that one).

I have ripped the audio from the songs, so if you want to see the videos then just click the link

'Swim Until You Can't See Land' sounds just as good as I remember it did from HG, I had tried filming it at the time, but my inability to work my mobile let me down, plus it would probably have looked and sounded shite anyway. Oh and the last song is a cover of a Neutral Milk Hotel song called 'Song Against Sex' which he's covered a few times, but at least this time it's a good quality recording.

A MASSIVE thank you goes out to JM for recording these for me

Frightened Rabbit - Live at Piano's

I'm not 100% as to where I got this bootleg from, and I'm pretty sure I haven't posted it before, it's not the best of quality, but still worth a listen even if it is just to hear Scott's pish stage patter.
I think it's recorded at a venue called Piano's in New York, but to be honest I dunno.

Jocky Venkataraman - new album & more importantly free stuff!!

I've only ever seen Jocky once, back last year when he was the support for Frightened Rabbit at the album launch for Midnight Organ Fight, I thought I'd had seen him again by now, but alas not. The one lasting memory I took away from that night was his song entitled 'Glasvegas' (which I posted the video for a while back). Anyhow, today I got message saying that he's got a new album coming out, which should be interesting to hear, it's called "Motorways Died Young", and it is released on the 29th of June on Wiseblood Industries

As a precursor to it's release a ten-song "Introduction to Jocky Venkataraman", comprising songs from the first and second LPs, is now available free of charge from here

My Latest Novel Album Launch Party

Just a quick reminder that the new My Latest Novel album is out today, you can add this to the seemingly never ending great albums to have come out of Scotland this year. In celebration of it's release the band have announced that they'll be playing at Stereo on Saturday the 6th of June, seems a bit odd to have a launch party a few weeks after the album comes out, guess it must fit their schedule better to have it then. Tickets are pretty reasonable at only £6.50, being a Saturday night I reckon this will sell out pretty fast.

Inside Out- the Insider Festival

With the Outside Festival being cancelled due a lack of ticket sales, it looked as if the Scottish festival go-ers were going to be missing out on yet another weekend of excellent music. Fear not though as from the ashes of Outsider we have the Insider Festival (subject to licensing) which will take place on the same weekend in the beautiful surroundings of Inshriach House, in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. It is being run by the people who were due to run all the bars at Outsider, and as they had already built most of the stage and bar, struck deals with brewers and distilleries, made friends with lots of musicians and invited lots of friends they have decided to hold an alternative festival at Inshriach, catering for a maximum of 500 people.

The big catch at the moment is that they have only 6 weeks to get their application through, a process which normally takes 3 months, so we'll be keeping our fingers crossed for them.
If it does all work out, then the plan is to go with the line up they had planned for the Outsider which includes the following;

Sparrow and the workshop,
Woodenbox,
Washington Irving
Ross Clark and the Scarves go missing
Will Cookson
The John Langan Band
Babelfish
Banana Sessions
The Injuns,
Claes Cem
and a motley selection of musicians from Session A9 and Treacherous Orchestra.
Plus DJs and other entertainment

Hopefully if this all pans out, then the festival would start with a chilled instrumental day on the Friday night, with the main line up running through Saturday and Sunday.
Ticket prices have still to be confirmed, although the organiser is hoping to bring it in around the £30 mark, which is a bit of a bargain in my eyes.

If all of that hasn't turned your pretty little head, then perhaps this might, food, now I've got your attention you greedy little pigs you! The plan is for the organisers to provide all of the food from there's and other local estates. Serving things like spit roast lamb, venison, trout from Rothiemurchus, Glenfeshie smoked salmon, salads from our own gardens and so on.

This sounds like it could be one hell of a party, I will keep you posted with any updates on this one as soon as I hear anything further.

Where? Cairngorms National Park
When? 27th-28th June
How Much? TBC (but it should be roughly about £30)

Camera Obscura - Vic Galloway Session (11/05/09)

Introducing - Dupec

If you have read any interview with We Were Promised Jetpacks lately then you might well have heard this band getting mentioned, as they seem to have slipped their name into nearly every interview that I have read with them. Don't believe me then check here, here, here and here, I could go on but I know I realise I am probably losing you already. Anyway, after seeing their name crop up so many times I thought I'd have a gander, for which I am very thankful for.
Bursting with raw energy, Dupec have something about them that your average Scottish band would chew their own arm off to have, I have become quite addicted to their EP, especially 'I can count to twelve' which you can listen to below.

If this sounds good to you then you can head over to their Myspace and order a live CD along with their latest studio recorded EP/demo for £5 for the pair, which quite frankly is f*cking bargain.

If you don't trust me, but still want something, cause hey everyone loves a freebie, then you can download a cop of their March 2008 Demo at the bottom of this page.

here's the copy 'n paste part....

Three good friends started Dupec in 2007. They wrote a few songs and started playing live in February 2008.

In 2008 they managed to play live in the big cities of Scotland with loads of lovely bands: We Were Promised Jetpacks, Endor, Lyons, Everything Everything, Spokes, The Foundling Wheel, Gdansk and The Xcerts to name a few. 2009 promises some more exciting gigs and opportunities for Dupec. In April 2009 Dupec won YourSound Artist of the month.

We have a four track EP recorded in January 2009 and a three track demo recorded in March 2008. Both are available for a small volume of gold at all our gigs.

I can count to twelve - Dupec.

Bit of a bugger as I was thinking of going to this, cheap tickets and a quality line up, no details available yet as to what's happened, but yet again another Homecoming Scotland Festival has been cancelled. More Rabbit Shows

In addition to an appearance at the Edinburgh Sick Kids Sunday Show, Scott from Frightened Rabbit has lined up a couple more shows in this month. First off he'll be venturing north to Aberdeen for a solo show at Snafu on the 15th, followed by a support slot at the Edinburgh Voodoo Room on the 24th. Tickets details can be found on the links:-

Malkie Beaten One Off

I know it can't just be me, but for years a I always viewed Edinburgh as being Glasgow's poor cousin when it came to all things musically, however, within the last couple of years it really does feel as if our neighbours to the east have raised their game somewhat (some might even say that Edinburgh has nicked Glasgow's crown, thoughts?!). Maybe I just wasn't aware of it, but it really does feel as if there is something of a 'scene' building up in the Capital, with bands like Broken Records and Meursault, various club nights and the highly influential Song By Toad blog.
The newest addition to add to this list would have to be 'Off the Beaten Tracks' a new website that ha cropped up to help promote new and established artists by getting them to 'record acoustic sessions in places you’d not normally see them.'
So far they have sessions by 'Come on Gang' and 'Team Turnip' posted up, and now they have just posted this session by 'Malcolm Middleton ' from this years Homegame, enjoy.

Hinterland...my rambling thoughts

All in all I thought it was a success, it turned out be a lot busier than I had feared it wouldn't be (does that make sense), not sure if that was because they give a shit load of tickets away for free, or if I just went to see more popular bands. My one point that I would make is that if they manage to get another go at it next year, make it a one day event, on the Friday and have less venues, as I did feel there was a bit of a split between the Sauchiehall Street vs Argyll Street venues. There were plenty of bands I fancied seeing, but the thought of hiking it back and forth from say the Classic Grand to Sleazy's really didn't appeal.
Anyway, that's about the only grumble I have, overall I really enjoyed myself, I caught the following:-

Day One - Thursday

Orphans & Vandals (the Classic Grand upstairs) - sounded like they desperately wanted to be the Velvet Underground, their first song went on too long, so my mind started to wander. some of their stuff did get my foot tapping though. Eventually got bored and went downstairs and saw...

Geordi La Force (the Classic Grand downstairs) - as he was one of the recommendations of bands to see by Under the Radar I thought I'd give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised and amused by what we witnessed. Basically the set up is one guy playing guitar to amusing video clips, when we came in he was thrashing out some spazzed out rock tunes to a Chuck Norris workout video. He was without doubt the best discovery of the weekend, although I must admit I did leave before the end of his set to head back upstairs to see...

Meursault (the Classic Grand upstairs), this was the second time I had seen them and once again I was highly impressed, starting off with material from their debut album, it was all very upbeat, their lead singers voice really does make them stand out. My attention did tend to wander a little bit towards the end when they started playing stuff from their new EP, but that was more so because I hadn't actually given it that many spins, plus the songs are a bit slower, that and I have the attention span of a gnat. Although the venue was only about a third full I reckon they'll have turned a few folk onto their music. Actually can anyone clarify how you are supposed to pronounce their name, initially I was saying something along the lines of Mewersalt, then Nic corrected me as the French would say it something like Mer-so, anyone know for sure as it has been bugging me. Also their patter was shit, but that's to be expected being from Edinburgh n'all...

Lastly, I went off to see Copy Haho (the Arches 2), as all of my mates wanted to see the Fall (who were shite apparently) I thought the easiest thing to do would be to go in with them to the Arches 1 and cut through, but hey that was far too logical. Once inside I was told that I'd have to go back out of the Cafe Bar entrance and walk round to the other entrance. Seriously wtf?! it's the same fecking venue, so that was a bit of a bummer. As for Copy Haho, they were alright, nothing amazing, one to watch in the future, but they didn't exactly blow me away.

Day Two - Friday

I decided that a venture up to the Art School to see Zoey Van Goey, they're a band I have listened to a fair bit on Myspace, but never seen live, I was pleasantly surprised how good they were. Even if me and the wife were lazy cnuts sitting on the comfy leather couches for most of their set. those old weary legs needed some recovery time after making the hike up that steep slope to get to the Art School. Oh and while it's on my mind, check this for freaky, on the way up to the gig, Nic nipped in and bought the new King Creosote album for her mate from the HMV on Buchanan Street (you know the on the used to be a Virgin/Zavvi) and just as we got up to the next HMV on Sauchiehll Street out came KC with his daughter, freaky coincidence or what. Toying with the idea of getting the album signed we were soon foiled by KC and KC Jnr out manoeuvring us by skipping off up the street. Anywa, that's enough of that rambling about my stalker-ish tendencies. Next up was a walk back down to see...

Sons & Daughters (the Arches 1), who were on good form, I've seen them millions of time and they rarely let me down, my only grumble would be the lack of new material, surely a wee taster of what we can expect from their next album would have been nice, actually I just sound like a moaning twat saying that. They were on top from, played all the big tunes and I really shouldn't be moaning unnecessarily. Last up for us were.....

Broken Records (the Classic Grand upstairs), as S&D's were running a bit late we only managed to catch half of their set, which was a bit of a bummer as they were sounding really good, even though lead singer, Jamie Sutherlan, had started to lose his voice. their debut album sounds amazing, and their live set is tight as fuck, I really have big hopes for them this year.
I really did fancy going up to see Jetpacks at the ABC2, but the though of having to kill two hours when I was pretty gassed didn't appeal too much, I'll see them in June instead.

That's about all I can think of to say on this wet Bank Holiday Monday, back to feeling sorry for myself for being stuck in work when everyone else is probably still in bed.....
