First Aid Kit (Fleet Foxes cover)- Tiger Mountain Peasant Song

First Aid Kit, aka sisters Johanna & Klara Söderberg release their very lovely debut EP, 'Drunken Trees', today via Wichita Recordings. Originally released in their native Sweden on The Knife's label, Rabid Records, 'Drunken Trees' serves as an introduction to the girls, in anticipation for their debut album set for release in September this year. The EP includes a bonus track, the much YouTubed cover of Fleet Foxes' 'Tiger Mountain Peasant Song', along with a DVD with three tracks performed and recorded live in the Swedish forest.

Introducing - The Soft Pack

The Soft Pack, are a four piece from San Diego currently residing in LA, who were, until recently, called the Muslims. Unfortunately, they had to change their name as it was causing a wee bit of controversy, doesn't the Muslims sound like a much cooler name for a band. Anyway, they're getting a fair amount of hype at the moment so i thought I'd post something up. What do they sound like you might well ask (if you a re a bit nuts and talk to your PC, as most of the folk in my office seem to do), well a bit Strokes-like with a touch of Jonathan Richman, would be the best attempt at desciribing their sound. They released their debut single, 'Nightlife/Bright Side' a couple of weeks back, check it out below.

Introducing - Meursault

Admittedly their album somewhat passed me by when it was released late last year, it was only because of a post I read comparing them to Frightened Rabbit (which I really don't see) that i decided to check them out. The best description that I have read of them so far would be to describe them as Folktronica, that might well sound a bit w*nky, but it's very apt.
Have a listen to their tunes on myspace, then do yourself a favour and order the album.

A Brief History Of Snow Patrol - Eyebrowy / ATL TV

Blast from the Past (part 3) The Reindeer Section - Son of an Evil Reindeer

Reindeer Section were a Scottish super-group assembled by Gary Lightbody of the Snow Patrol , who got together members of various Scottish bands including, Arab Strap, Belle And Sebastian, Mogwai, Astrid, Idlewild, Snow Patrol, Mull Historical Society, Alfie (yes i know they're not Scottish), teenage Fanclub and the Vaselines, to name but a few. Their first album, Y'all Get Scared Now Ya Hear (2001), was received enthusiastically by the press, despite the fact that each song was vastly different than the standards of the original bands. The 'super-group' released their second album, , 'Son of Evil Reindeer on Bright Star Recordings, 2002, featuring one my all time favourite songs, 'Cartwheels'. The band's last gig to date was on the 14th of December 2002 at the Queen Margaret Union in Glasgow, and an amazing gig it was too.

It was soon after this that Snow Patrol were signed up and then came 'Run' and off Snow Patrol soared into arenas and million selling albums. So will we ever see another 'Section album personally I doubt it, Gary is too busy with his day job these days. Although in an interview with Planet Sound last year he did leave the carrot dangling.
"If we could do one in the same spirit of the first two, I'd love to do a third record. I'd want the same cast of 27 people involved - 27 is a big enough number. The trouble is, I don't get to Glasgow much now, so I can't do much arm-twisting any more."' Planet Sound

Frightened Rabbit announce 2 Edinburgh Shows

They will be playing acoustic shows at the Bowery on the 4th of April and at Sneaky Pete's on the 25th of the same month. Sneaky Pete is now sold out, for the Bowery Show you can get your tickets here supporting them that night are Meursault.

"The Bowery Bandstand is a gig space. Capable of holding up to, erm, about a hundred to a hundred and fifty or so, this is easily the nicest place in Edinburgh to host a gig, being neither too stinky, nor too amateurish."

We are very pleased to announce that Frightened Rabbit have added a 2nd show at The Captains Rest on 31st March after their original show on that same evening, sold the venue out in record time. The additional show is a Matinee, and will open at 3pm.

In January Frightened Rabbit won the coveted no 1 spot of The Skinny's album of the year. The band released 'The Midnight Organ Fight' this year to rave reviews including this 8.5 review from pitchfork - "Midnight Organ Fight is full of rousing barnburners that flicker with soul, ballads that ache with masculine vulnerability, and Frightened Rabbit's best song yet, opener "The Modern Leper". Built on insistently downstroked guitars and drums that build from a gallop to a thundering crash, this Pixies-go-acoustic track swells with self-loathing." Now a four piece band with the recently recruited Andy Monaghan, Frightened Rabbit are able to play many more songs from their new album, they would previously have struggled to fill out instrumentally.

'We have announced the names of another 27 acts taking the overall band tally for the festival up to 57. Among the new bands announced are: Glasgow’s acclaimed Sons and Daughters, Michachu who can currently be seen touring the UK with Late of the Pier, The Invisible, BBC 6Music favourites Metronomy, Count and Sinden who were behind one of last year’s biggest club hits Beeper. Previously announced Hinterland act Tommy Reilly, has also won the Orange Unsigned Musician competition that aired on Channel 4 since being confirmed for Hinterland.'

Introducing - The Low Anthem

Another day another folky rock band, this time it's the Low Anthem, a three piece hailing from Providence, Rhode Island (no, me neither). Steve Lamacq recently called the band "this year's Fleet Foxes," now I am not sure if they will quite live up to that billing, but they are pretty damn good. This their 3rd album 'Oh My God, Charlie Darwin', reminds me a bit of the Felice Brothers and Dr Dog, so if you like your Americana/folk music with a pinch of rockiness, then this may be right up your proverbial street.

Blast from the Past (part two) - Urusei Yatsura

'Urusei Yatsura came together in the summer of 1993 when Graham Kemp met Fergus Lawrie while both were studying at Glasgow University, and where they bonded over their shared love of the Velvet Underground and Galaxy 500. Each persuaded the other to join an imaginary band, which, with the drink fuelled recruitment of bass player Elaine Graham became a reality. Revelling in a spirit of awkwardness the band decide to call themselves after an obscure Japanese comic Urusei Yatsura, the translation of which changes depending on who you ask and how it's been written. The band prefer "Noisy Stars". The three ricocheted around the Glasgow gigging circuit until they managed to coerce Elaine's younger brother into banging the drums for an impromptu set one night. Seven years later, the line-up remains the same.

Late in 1994 they made their first outing on vinyl by contributing a live recording of the song "Guitars are Boring" to a compilation released by the Kazoo Club (based in Glasgow's notorious 13th Note). This recording, along with their fanzine "Kitten Frenzy" brought the band to the attention of John Peel and a session followed, preceded by a six track maxi single "All Hail Urusei Yatsura". With the proceeds of the Peel session the band released a split single on their own Modern Independent Records label, "Pampered Adolescent", which they followed up with releases by some of their favourite Glasgow contemporaries. Although being in charge of their own record label was a dream shared by all of the band, lack of finances and an opportunity to work with London based Che Records persuaded them to shelve their label and fanzine for the time being and concentrate on recording for the London based label'

Back in 1996, when I had just started going to gigs i found myself at many a show by Urusei Yatsura, singing along to songs about Kweepies liking Watermelons and the like. I think i still have my old t-shirt kicking about somewhere (actually I know i do, it's just not a pretty site when I wear it). Anyway, enough about me, UY's debut album, 'We Are Urusei Yatsura' is one of those records that i had forgotten about until i recently stumbled upon their new incarnation, 'Project A-ko', which made me revisit this record which I played continuously back in the day (god I hate that phrase). It's filled with spiky little pop gems, that remind me of being young and being arsed to jump about like a dafty doon the front. if you haven't heard of them before then give them a listen, here's hoping the 'A-ko still have that sprightly youthful fun sound as this is a more than welcome return.

I hope your have your hyperventilation-bags at the ready…

We are grateful for your patience and even more so for your impatience. As you know we have been busy seducing our new record label, the classy and top of the class 4AD and are now ready to shower you with album news.

Camera Obscura’s new album will be called My Maudlin Career and will be released on April 20^th in places which aren’t the USA and April 21^st in places which are. Not long eh? I suggest you draw up some sort of chart and tick of the days and maybe rating your excitement out of ten or trying to find a new word to express it everyday. This is what I will be doing for sure.

The album will be preceded by the single French Navy at the
beginning of April and you can hear the title track on myspace RIGHT NOW but
you can also purchase it from itunes or get given it as a present when you
register at camera-obscura.net. We’re super generous and don’t you forget it. (This is the track I got to play Abba’s piano on, swede-pop/piano-trivia/pointless information fans.)
To celebrate the release we will be doing some special live

Tennent's Mutual to be discontinued - Scotland yawns

Hardly surprising, but a wee bit sad, what had the potential to be something quite new and exciting, turned out to be a boring system of ten trillion votes, votes on what we should be voting about and then pretty much everyone lost any interest.
The question now is, do Tennent's continue to sponsor music in Scotland, will we see Triptych retrun (fingers crossed) or will they just stick with TITP and that's your lot. Only time will tell...

Here's what they had to say for themselves.

We're hugely disappointed to announce that The Tennent's Mutual will not be continuing this year, due to the extremely challenging economic climate.

This has been an incredibly hard decision for us to make, not least because of the success enjoyed by The Tennent's Mutual in its inaugural year. While there will be no live music programme from The Tennent's Mutual this year, it will bow out leaving a considerable legacy: as a not-for-profit venture, all ticket income from last year's shows - £47,014.86 - will be donated to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland: a charity which provides access to, and develops awareness of, music therapy across the country.

The work of Nordoff-Robbins (Scotland) is largely carried out on an outreach basis in hospitals, schools, residential health care settings, and community / voluntary sector projects. It works with children and adults with a wide range of special needs, including autistic spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, profound and multiple disabilities, those with mental health problems, people suffering from dementia, and those in palliative care.

This substantial charity donation from The Tennent's Mutual will benefit the Scottish music community through 2009 and beyond: it'll help sustain and develop Nordoff-Robbins' nation-wide music therapy services and accessibility.

In the meantime, www.tennentsmutual.com will be live until noon on Monday February 9th, and all questions, feedback, etc on today's announcement are welcome via the forum.

Passion Pit - WOXY Session

Now that i find myself repeatedly listening to PP's 'Chunk of Change' EP, I have been looking to see what else I can found out there. So far I have come up with this live Session for WOXY.
Here's the blurb

"Passion Pit's "Chunk Of Change" EP began in the heart & mind of Michael Angelakos as a love letter to his girlfriend at the time. A belated Valentine's Day gift, he never anticipated that anybody would ever really hear it except for a small circle of friends.

Flash forward to 2008 when "Sleepyhead" catapulted his musical endeavors into the welcoming arms of the frequently fickle blogosphere. By this point, Passion Pit was fleshed out into a full band and the EP was given a proper release in September.

Passion Pit - Sleepyhead

So after loads more listens to the Passion Pit EP, I have to admit that I have changed my opinion on them. They EP is pretty damn special, I am bit gutted that I'll be missing them at the Captains Rest this month, so if your kicking about in 'vegas on the 26th I'd recommend you check them out. "The next Glasgow gig I do is the Mill at Oran Mor (731 - 735 Great Western Rd) on 4th March. It will be with one other band Sugar Crisis and I’ll be on last (gigs are early in there though so please get there sharpo!). Fleet Foxes side project?

Just discovered, on the forthcoming reissue of Fleet Foxes debut (which is basically the Album + The Sun Giant EP & the new 7" Inch vinyl of the "Mykonos" single), there is a new Fleet Foxes B-Side on their called 'The False Knight Upon the Road'. Where can i hear this you might well ask, well it's streaming on Robin Pecknold's side band 'White Antelope's' Myspace, or if you would like to download it click the link below. Apparently the song is a cover of an old Child Ballad (no me neither) and has previously been covered by Steeleye Span and Richard Thompson.

Are all the new toys getting boring?

In the past few days DF have announced that Connect isn't going ahead this year, blaming the Credit Crunch as the main reason for it's absence this year, it made me think is the Scottish Music Scene getting a bit boring. Musically, no I would say it's probably the healthiest it's ever been, but with the demise of Connect and the snoozefest that is the Tennents's Mutual gigs, I found myself thinking how boring it's got. A couple of years ago we had Indian Summer, a vibrant up and coming festival, that got the whole boutique festival pretty much spot on, then being the greedy bugger that he is, Geoff Ellis and his evil empire stepped in stole all of their thunder with Connect. Admittedly I did jump on the Connect bandwagon (still went Indian Summer mind you), but the line-up that was offer at Inveraray Castle was quite literally mouth watering. then what happened, well Ellis's new bay kills off Indian summer and then Connect becomes some kind of poor man's T in the Park. Brilliant, just brilliant.

Next up Tennents cancel Triptych, a truly unique festival that offered up a variety of different acts that you wouldn't necessarily see in Glasgow, plus they offered up special one off shows, ie pretty much any of the gigs held at the Tramway (why is this venue not used more often??). To replace it with Tennent's Mutual, which sounded new and exciting when it first came out, but after months of pointless voting, the first gig (excluding their launch nights) that the presented us with was the Shred Your Face (or something like that), featuring Los Campesinos, No Age and Born Ruffians. Yes that was a decent enough line-up, but it was the same line-up that was also touring the UK, so it was hardly as if we were getting something all the different. To be fair some of the gigs that they lined up were not too shabby, although having said that I didn't really see the merit in having bands play in Paisley Town Hall. if most of your punters are coming from Glasgow to go to a gig, why not just have it there. Anyway, those gigs were way back last year and now i find myself somewhat bored by the whole concept, if I have to go through another vote I think I may well die of boredom. Having had a look at their website they too seem to have given up the ghost, their news section is pretty appalling, the forum is merely a platform for unsigned bands to 'big themselves up, shame nobody is listening though.

Is all of this a bad thing, well for me I guess not, as long as there is still a demand for live music, which I believe there is, what with O2 and HMV both getting more involved with their investments in various venues. My big hope for this year is to see promoters thinking more about the pricing of tickets, scrap or even just incorporate some of the booking fee into the ticket and the return of Indian Summer, a boy can but dream....
