The Return of Union of Knives

"They are currently working on a new record, ‘The Anti-Fire’ with Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails, which is to be released in mid-2009. The first track to be released from the recordings is ‘We Are All Doing Drugs’, which will receive a limited 7” release late Feb / early march.

Commenting on the title of their new album the band said "We chose the words "The AntiFire" to represent the human capacity for sucking up anger, despair and the bleakest moments in life and transforming them into something wholly more positive and constructive. It seems to us that from the most minor of spats to the deepest depressions there exists a germ of opportunity that offers an alternative to the obvious. This kind of alchemy is a recurring theme throughout the album."

The band are also previewing 5 new songs on their Myspace, the newer stuff seems pretty dark, but that's not such a bad thing, I'm really enjoying 'Press That Down', oh and they also have a Myspace for all of the remixes they've done, listen here

You can also watch another video here (NSFW - unless you work lets you watch loads of Japanese folk shagging)

And if that wasn't enough you can also listen find them on lastfm, here

The band will preview some of their new material at a gig at the Arches (20/02/09), further details can be found here

John Martyn RIP

Some sad news - John Martyn died earlier today. His official website carries a brief confirmation:

"John Martyn 11th September 1948 - 29th January 2009

With heavy heart and an unbearable sense of loss we must announce that John died this morning."

New De Rosa Album On It's Way

Having only really come across De Rosa in the past few months, I feel somewhat ashamed that they slipped under my radar, as 'Mend' is one the finest albums to come out Scotland in a good few years. So finding out that their 'sophomore' album 'Prevention' was due out on the 2nd of March was like having all my Christmas's at once (okay perhaps not that great - but hey I'm old and Christmas isn't what it used to be!). I diverse, in anticipation of it's release you can sample one the new album tracks below.

WhenThe Village People met Flight of the Conchords

Randy Jones (aka the Cowboy from The Village People) will appear in a forthcoming episode of FotC as a nasty name bouncer called 'Bruno', and is if that was exciting enough Michael Gondry (Eternal Sunshine, Science of Sleep, Be Kind Rewind) is going to be directing.
Sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun.

Union of Knives to play show as part of the Glasgow Film Festival

Where - the Arches
When - 20th February

'Union of Knives are a Glasgow based experimental rock group, not dissimilar to Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails. The three-piece have enjoyed international success since the launch of their critically acclaimed debut album, Violence and Birdsong. The band have been recording their second album in LA and are almost ready to unleash it. This intimate show will be a multi-sensory, all-encompassing affair with spectacular visuals accompanying and preceding the band's set. A hand picked selection of local artists and filmmakers will provide unique visuals and installations throughout the venue. Expect this to be an early sell-out! Over 18s only.'

Introducing - BLK JKS

* As I have been hunting for this for the past few weeks, i thought it only fair to share. BLK JKS hail from Johannesburg, but are currently residing State side, where they are starting to get a lot of attention. Like a f8cked up TV on the Radio, they sound pretty good to me, with 'Lakeside' being far and away the stand out on their EP 'Mystery' due for release on Secretly Canadian in the next month or so.

The Phantom Band play instore (Glasgow-centric)

Witht he release of their quite wonderful debut this week, the Phantom band are promoting their album by playing an instore at Fopp in Glasgow this Wednesday, details below.

"Glasgow Instore @ FOPP, 19 Union Street. For those of you who find yourself in or around Glasgow city centre this wednesday, try to be in Union Street's FOPP for 5pm when The Phantom Band will be performing a full live set before signing copies of their album. Never having played an instore before, they're all a bit nervous that no-one will turn up so we're relying on you kind souls to dispel their fears in a mushroom cloud of unrestrained enthusiasm. In other Phantom Band news, work has begun on the limited edition 7" vinyl version of The Howling and it's all rather exciting because the artwork is being inked by none other than comic book uber-artist Frank Quitely (All Star Superman), and while we're in a name-dropping mood, we might as well mention that a video for The Howling is currently in the planning stages with directing duties being taken up by the Booker Prize winning author of 'Vernon God Little', DBC Pierre. Now that's pretty cool in our humble opinion..."

Blast From The Past (part one) - Baby Chaos

A long long time ago in a galaxy...sorry I meant 1995, I went to my second ever gig and stumbled across the first band that were fortunate enough to receive some Lloydy love obsession, many followed, step forward Symposium, Idlewild, Snow Patrol, Frightened Rabbit, et al. But as the saying goes, you never forget your first love, and mine was Baby Chaos, hailing from Stewarton just outside Kilmarnock, these boys blew away Terrorvision (the band that I had gone to see, do keep up), and from that moment on I was hooked. Somehow rave reviews (in Kerrang!) and support slots on many a Wildhearts tour never saw them break through to the mainstream.
I just thought I would take this opportunity to go back and revisit their first two albums, 'Safe Sex, Designer Drugs & the Death of Rock'n'Roll' and 'Love Yourself Abuse'.
After being dropped by EastWest (mainly due to the A&R man the signed them leaving the company) and the departure of drummer Davey Greenwood (who was replaced by the drummer from Jesus Jones) the band changed their name to Deckard and released another 2 albums.
Lead singer Chris Gordon is now singer in Glasgow band 'Union of Knives'.

New Music Networking Site

Last week we got Spotify to play with, this week we get rivmixx to play with, details below:-

"A new online service for music people and music fans has launched aiming to give artists the facility to profile themselves in more sophisticated ways, fans the ability to navigate all the content by setting up their own personal magazine, and industry people the tools to network with each other. Called Rivvmix, it's a bit like MySpace, Facebook and Linked-In combined, with some original music editorial thrown into the mix too.

The industry networking component is perhaps most interesting, as it pulls together a range of digital tools used by music people into one place, including 300MB file transfer and business to business instant messaging. Artists and producers, meanwhile, can include lots more information about themselves than most artist profile sites allow, and are encouraged to embed players from other social networks and download stores.

Commenting on the new service, co-founder Danny McMillan told CMU: "[Co-founder] Steve Travell and I wanted to create something that could be more focused towards the music industry and their fans. We liked elements of other online music networks but nothing quite hit the mark and was tailored enough to be a all-in-one solution. Also, we thought we could offer a different approach - as it seems most start ups seem to be tech heavy with an interest in music rather actually coming from the music industry".

Have fun www.rivmixx.com

Introducing - Wintersleep (UK tour and album)

Wintersleep - Welcome To The Night Sky
'Wintersleep recently received the Juno Award for Best Group after the release of this, their third album. 'Welcome To The Night Sky' is certainly deserving of this accolade, and will hopefully elevate the band to greater success. In part, it sounds like a mixture of songs from the first four Snow Patrol albums and there are times when this feels like a compilation charting the evolution of Snow Patrol, such is the likeness; Paul Murphy's vocals would fit perfectly over tracks like 'Run' or 'Chasing Cars'. The band also take cues from early masters of shoegaze and epic indie, retracing the steps of Pavement and Mogwai to reach a sound comparable to Broken Social Scene, adding their own unique pop spin. Stand out tracks include the melancholy, organ-driven 'Weighty Ghosts' and the funky shoegaze of opener 'Drunk On Aluminium'. Although not entirely original, 'Welcome To The Night Sky' performs well and is consistent enough to keep its audience's interest. SJS'

I really thought I had posted this a while back, but alas I checked and I hadn't, must be old age kicking in or more likely I have managed to destroy that many brain cells through too many pints and bottles of vino. Introducing - The Burns Unit

As I am off to see Roddy Woomble and Co. support the Burns Unit tonight, I thought it might be an idea to check out some of their material. Originally brought together as part of the Burnsong collective, which saw various musicians holed up in a cottage for a week to see what they came up with.

The Burns Unit are Emma Pollock (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, piano), Future Pilot AKA (bass, electronics), Karine Polwart (vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion, shruti box), Kim Edgar (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, accordion, organ), King Creosote (vocals, acoustic guitar, accordion, keyboards), Mattie Foulds (drums, percussion), MC Soom T (vocals) & Michael Johnston (vocals, piano, accordion, percussion).

They are currently unsigned, but we should expect an album to come out at some point this year, until then you can download some live versions of their songs below.

Camera Obscura - new album update

Back in 2006, Camera Obscura released their third album, "Let's get out of this Country" with the only song ever, to feature my name, the truly wonderful 'Lloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken', as we haven't heard much of them in the past few years, apart form their headlining slot at 'Hey You get off My Pavement' this year.
So I thought I'd do some digging to see what's going on, turns out they announced back in November of last year that they had finished recording their new album and that it would be released in 2009, and that's about it at the moment. I can't seem to find any sort of a release date for the new record or even what it's called, so until I do I thought you migth appreciate being able to refresh your memories and update your music library with their back catalouge.

In the Studio: The Twilight Sad

"Having played every shed in Scotland before moving on to conquer Europe with Mogwai late last year, The Twilight Sad's James Graham exclusively reveals the Kilsyth quartet's plans for album number two.

So we are heading in to Chem 19 at the start of January, probably a couple of stone heavier and with our livers needing a wee break after the festive period. The record doesn’t have a name yet because we like to name it when everything is finished, but no doubt we will come up with something very long and very pretentious to try and make out that we are intelligent. All the songs are written and we hope to get it out in the second half of the year, but there will be a single and a video in the first half.

We have definitely moved on from 14 Autumns and 15 Winters, musically and lyrically. One thing that I can promise is that the lyrics are very dark, but you might have to look into them a bit to realise. They are mainly based around things that have happened to me over the past two years, revolving mainly around losing people and being none too proud or happy with myself about my antics and situations I’ve found myself in. So if you’re looking for a record with a lot of hope and happy songs then fuck off, ‘cause you wont find it here with us! Maybe on the third album when we all have coke and heroin addictions things will start to look a bit brighter!"

Spotify a new way to enjoy music?

A new online music service called Spotify is offering free music from thousands of renowned artists' back catalogues.

At a cost of nothing, users of
Spotify.com can legally listen to tracks by everyone from The Rolling Stones to Radiohead and Glasvegas.

Spotify's interface and usability is based heavily on iTunes, with users being able to search for their favourite artists in the programme, create and share playlists, and scrobble listened songs to their Last.FM account.

Although songs on the service are streamed, playback is instant and users can listen to tracks on their computer as many times as they want.

Despite not having an option letting users transfer tracks to their MP3 players, torrentfreak.com reports that Spotify programmers haven't ruled this out for the future.

Users can listen to artists' legally on the service because 'Spotify' has signed licensing deals with a range of record companies, including Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI Music, Warner Music Group, Merlin and The Orchard.

Currently, potential users have three choices if they want to become a member of Spotify. Day passes, giving users 24-hour access, are available to buy from spotify.com for 99p, while a premium account costs £9.99 per month.

Alternatively, current members can send invites to others allowing them to use the service for free.

Arrested Development - the Movie?

We can but hope, rumours are rife that Michael Cera is the one holding it all up, afraid of being typecast me thinks. Hell it's not like he's already playing the smae character in every singel movie he's ever done, a la Juno, Superbad, that Mixtape thing that looks mince, etc.
I seriously hope that they manage to get this into production, as Gob might say "Come on!!"
