Aberfeldy to play the ABC2 on the 22/12/08

Anyone fancy some twee pop action just before xmas? If so Aberfeldy are playing the ABC2 on the Monday, tickets are a tenner. Having now parted company with Rough Trade they are currently working on a new album, which will be released through 17 Second Records, who they recently released their last single "Claire" through.

That could be a crazy few days of gigs for me, Idlewild on the Wed, Thu, Malcolm Middleton on the Friday, Idewild again on the Sunday, Aberfeldy on the Monday then the Twilight Sad on the Tuesday. Looks like nobody will be getting any xmas pressies from me then....

Introducing - Broken Records

Way back at the start of the year, Broken Records came under my radar, and i must admit that i was taken in by the initial hype. The promise of a 'Scottish Arcade Fire' were banded about (and there was me thinking that My Latest Novel had that crown, or perhaps that was only for 2007),
but upon hearing them it was a case of lazy journalism, as although there's a lot of them, they are more like the Pogues or even 'the Boss', but with that added twist of Scottishness in there.
So far they remain unsigned, more fool the record companies, check them out and let me know what you think.

how you can be involved in the new Idlewild album

In quite a novel approach the 'wild are looking to involve their fans in the making of their new album, (details below) sounds like a great idea to me...

"Idlewild are pleased to announce plans for our forthcoming new studio album with an opportunity for our fans to be involved from an early stage. We will be in the studio for the first few months of 2009 and plan a conventional album release in the summer but, for a limited time, we would like to offer our fans a chance to be involved from the beginning by pre-ordering a special edition album along with plenty of extras. This offer is available world-wide so that finally fans overseas will have the chance to hear our music at the same time as everyone in the UK and before any general release.

Here's how it works:
By going to idlewildmusic.com you will get details on how to pre-order and what you will receive.
These include a limited edition CD album (with free download version) in exclusive packaging & including at least one bonus track. This will be shipped within weeks of completion & before any standard release.
You can get your name to appear in the CD booklet with the album and on a roll-call on the web site.
Access to download 15 free tracks from live recordings at the King Tuts "album by album" shows In December '08 & access to a members only section of the web site with album progress updates, exclusive photo and video content from the recording and preproduction process with diaries/blogs by individual band members and lots more.
Signing up will also automatically enter you into draws for special prizes.

Why are we doing this?
After 11 years of recording and releasing records within the constraints of the record industry we now fee that the time is right and the technology exists for us to deal more quickly and directly with the fans. It also allows us total control of our music and will ultimately mean that should you choose to get involved you will hear our music as soon as it is available.
Although the album will have a more traditional release some time later in 2009 we hope you will support us in our efforts to try something new and choose to pre-order the album now."

So I got my wrists slapped

Bag o Shite!

for uploading the fecking Killers album,I don't even know why i bother sticking it up here as it really isn't my cup of tea. Are you human or dancer, what the feck does that mean, you're human of course, unless your some kind of weird alien being like a Cheeky Girl. That's the last time I ever post any major albums up here, its crappy unheard of indie bands from now on, there's no holding me back no. If you want the new Razorlight album and you can't find it, tough sh8t, learn to use google, although having said that i would happily post there sh*t if it meant that tw*t Borrell didn't get your money, what a happier place this world would be if actually did disappear up his own arse.

Here's some of the spiel I got emailed

Gig Art

I am not sure if its just cause i am getting older and I'm of an age now when sticking a poster of my favourite band up on the wall just seems a bit immature or studenty, I guess its just getting old.
For some reason though I can't quite let go, and have now started to look out 'gig art', basically posters that have been specially designed for that gig, something that a designer has spent time lovingly creating, not just your bog standard photo-shop effort that promoters plaster all over the shop. I think once framed they can look pretty damn good, and I'll happily admit that I have them decorated all over my house (still clinging to my youth!). The one thing that I do find strange is that the majority of these designs come from the US of A, I can't quite understand why this is. Especially in these times when merchandise sales are helping to make up for all of that lost revenue from illegal downloaders (not that I am arguing against downloading in any way), but I am sure that there are plenty more folk out there who would be interested in taking home some form of art work that will act as reminder of a great gig they once went to
One promoter that I think could look to go down this route would be the Tennants Mututal guys & gals, with their ability to put on one-off gigs, surely there is a market there.
Its no as if they would need to do much, just speak to a designer to come up with a design and split the profits, or even get themselves up the Art School and get some students to design them, giving them something for their portfolio and in turn getting a design for very little money.
Anyway, that's just my thoughts on the matter, probably brought as I would like to stop having to pay a premium to order posters for American shows that I've never been to....

Fleet Foxes - ABC Glasgow 09/11/08

Fleet Foxes album of the year contenders without a shadow of a doubt, but how do they cut it live, well after seeing them in San Francisco a couple of months ago.
I have to hand it to them those boys have something special, last time I saw them it was in a gorgeous setting with beautiful sunshine, this time it was a wet Saturday night in Glasgow the setting was little bit different...
I got there half way through the support act J. Tillman who is actually the drummer in FF's, he seemed to be going down pretty well, managing to hold the attention of a sold out ABC on a Saturday night is hardly the easiest, but he seemed to go down pretty well.

As for the Fleet Foxes, they were just f*cking awesome! Even after spending about ten minutes of fannying about on stage before they started, the audience waited quietly, there was no heckling, almost as if they knew they were going to witness something pretty damn special, and they weren't disappointed.

Two new 1990's tunes

With a new album well on its way, we should be seeing a new 1990's album some time next year, hurrah! Here's what Jackie had to say in his myspaz blog (anyone else reckon he looks like a buck toothed Steve Lurpack?)

"This evening I managed to put up a coupla demos we did earlier in the year. Don't really wanna spoil the surprise of the new album (February or March i guess, more news later) but we've been playing VONDELPARK and THE BOX for aeons now so might as well put up a version of them. They were recorded at ARC practice rooms just south of the river in Glasgow then vocals and mixing were completed in my bedroom in Pollokshields. I'm not very good at technical stuff. All the needles end up in RED. But the recordings have charm and I hope you like em."

More Frightened Rabbit Dates

I was a bit of a twat and left it to the last minute to buy tickets for their Tuts show, and now its gone and sold out, baws. If anyone has a spare ticket or knows where I might be able to get one then I'd really appreciate it.
They are doing some other dates though, which I am seriously considering, there' s the acoustic headline set at the Shelter gig in Mono the following day, plus some other Scottish dates (see below). Then support the Biffy at the SECC on the 20th of December.
I am quite tempted to go through to the Edinburgh show if anyone fancies it, I know its a school night, but I think I might drive, plus My Latest Novel are supporting which is a double bonus.
Anyhoo, here's the dates

9TH DECEMBER - LIQUID ROOM, EDINBURGH
w/ My Latest Novel (first show in Edinburgh in 2 years) + TBC
10TH DECEMBER - FAT SAMS, DUNDEE
w/ Grace Emilys + TBC
11TH DECEMBER - MOSHULU, ABERDEEN

Best Act Ever!!!!!

Picture it Glasgow, 1987, an 8 year old boy (let's call him...er Floyd) walks into Woolies in Shawlands to buy his first ever single. Clutching the 7" tight to his body (ooer-missus) he runs home to play his newly prized treasure. That single I am proud to announce was Rick Astley - Together Forever! Something which whenever I bring it up brings about much laughter and abuse, well friends you may well have mocked me then, but how silly do you feel now.
Last night the legend that is Rick Astley picked up an award for the Best Act Ever at some MTV awards thing in Scouseland. Do you see, do you see now what a visionary I was and still am?!
So next time you mock me for bigging up some new band as being the best thing since slice bread, think back to 1987 when I picked up on artist who would go on to be the GREATEST ACT EVER!

Annual Top Ten Lists

First off I must admit that I do enjoy reading some magazines Top 10/20/50 albums of the year, quite often there are certain albums that might have passed me by, gone under the radar or I've just plain old ignored them for one reason or the other. the one list that does genuinely excite me is Planet Sounds annual list (that'll be the Teletext music page for all those that don't get to be in charge of the remote), over the years they have turned me on to loads of good stuff that I might have missed, Modest Mouse being the main band that springs to mind. Unfortunately their budget has just been cut quite drastically, so I am apprehensive as to whether they'll be quite as many interesting new things cropping up this year.

One pointless list which crops up every year is the NME Cool List, first off I stopped reading the NME a good few years back when it became the equivalent of a musical version of Heat magazine. Plus I was sick of reading about over hyped mince, a la the Libertines, et al.
Anyway, back to my point surely to be 'cool' you don't need to be on a fecking list, surely this takes all the 'cool' out of it. Secondly who compiles this list? a bunch of geeky music journalists who are simply looking to jump on the next big thing bandwagon. Pah! load of pish!

Here is the list in case you care

1. Alice Glass, Crystal Castles
2. Jay-Z
3. Andrew VanWyngarden, MGMT
4. Alex Turner, Arctic Monkeys/The Last Shadow Puppets
5: Sam Dust, Late Of The Pier
6. Ladyhawke
7. Caleb Followill, Kings Of Leon
8. MIA
9. Liam Gallagher, Oasis
10. Caroline McKay, Glasvegas
11. Pink Eyes, Fucked Up
12. Guy Garvey, Elbow
13. Lil Wayne
14. Dave Sitek, TV On The Radio
15. Johnny Marr, The Cribs
16. Ezra Koenig, Vampire Weekend
17. Santogold
18. Ed MacFarlane, Friendly Fires
19. Florence Welch, Florence And The Machine
20. Dev Hynes, Lightspeed Champion
link

I must admit that i haven't heard of a few of the folk on there, but seriously is there any need to continue to suck up Liam Gallacher's arse, Alex Turner wow what a surprise that was and seriously the bird from Glasvegas?! have you seen her she looks like she's about 50, had four kids and lives in Easterhouse (check here).
Seriously did they just listen to some primary school kids arguing, "Liam Gallacher's cooler than Girls Aloud, etc"

And I haven't even started on the back slapping, arse tonguing, anal fisting get together that is the Q Awards....

Introducing We Were Promised Jetpacks

A couple of day back I brought you a band with possibly the worst name ever, in order to balance things up a little I thought it'd be a good idea to mention one of the best named bands ever!
Hailing from Edinburgh, but based in Glasgow, WWPJ are the latest act to be taken under the (Mac)FatCat umbrella, could they be THE band of 2009, following on from their peers Twilight Sad (2007) & Frightened Rabbit (2008).
These guys are barely of out of their teens, they looks like public school boys, yet I personally rate them pretty highly, its hard to pigeon hole their music, as many of their songs sound quite different, but some influences that come to mind would be Interpol & Frightened Rabbit
Check out 'Tiny Little Voices' one of the songs of the year!
