Introducing the Incredible Flight of Birdman

First off that name, I know its pants, but please don't hold that against them. Having come across these guys after reading a review of their demo on Planet Sound (review here) I admit that I was intrigued, especially as PS was one of the first reviewers to bring The Twilight Sad to the attention of the outside world. There will be the obvious Smiths/Morrissey comparisons, but then again this is no bad thing! Give them a listen and let me know what you think.

Over 30,000 complaints - how many of them do you think have actually listened to what was said

not many I reckon.
Here's the clip of what was said

To be honest i didn't find any of it all that shocking, in fact I thought it was pretty funny, sounds like another media witch hunt over a storm in a tea cup caused by the Daily Mail readers of this world.

The Rapture - Tapes (new mix tape from the NYC boys)

"The Rapture “Tapes” provides a beautiful mix of funk, house, rare-groove disco, hip-hop and electronica. A wealth of seminal gems hidden within this 22-track monster of an album

The Rapture, known for cowbell-smashing electro rock anthems, have been very kind in compiling a fine selection of musical treats just for our ears. The tastes span three decades from 70’s French disco pioneers Martin Circus to 90’s club hits; remember Paul Johnsons classic “Get Get Down”?

There’s techno tones from the likes of Kid Crème; head-nodding and knee jerk appreciation for Armand Van Heldens “Flowerz”; foot -tamping from 80’s rap giants the Junkyard Band with their bass heavy epic, “The Word” and classics such as Vaughan Mason & Crew “Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll”.

The Rapture boys fuse the old with the modern and with so many artists releasing compilation CDs; this one stands out by miles."

New Festival coming to Glasgow

It look like the success of this years Sauchiehall Crawl was noted by quite a few bodies within the Scottish Music Industry, as details are emerging of a major new event coming to Glasgow next year, on the 30th April to the 1st of May. No acts have been announced as of yet, but promoters are planning to start revealing bands by the middle of November when tickets are due to go on sale. Venues that have so far been confirmed to host events include, the ABC, the Admiral, the Arches, the Art School, Barfly, Box, Classic Grand, the Flying Duck, the Ivy, King Tuts, Macsorleys, Pivo Pivo, Stereo and the Sub Club, with more TBC.

Organiser Mike Oman said the event will “allow people to really experience the level of established and underground talent that Scotland, and the UK, has to offer.”

The festival will be a one-ticket event, which gives fans access to every venue.

Keep your ear to the ground - introducing Wavves

Another new band that is receiving a lot of hype on ye olde interweb are Wavves, I have only had the chance to listen to a couple of tunes so far, but I must admit that I am intrigued. having only released his debut album on tape, Nathan Williams aka 'Wavves' has been generating quite a lot of interest in himself. He's due to release his second album through De Stijl (where the White Stripes first emerged from), early next year. Until then you can check out his debut down below.

Will it ever stop raining?

Seriously, since I got back from California well over a month ago I can't remember a single day when it hasn't p*ssed it down. Should I seriously consider building an ark or perhaps buy an umbrella?! I always wonder what tourists think of our weather when they get here, does it ruin their holiday, are they prepared for the misery of it all. Actually who cares, at least they can go back to their sunny countries and laugh at us and our miserable weather.

God I must be old if I am talking about the weather.....

How did Cardigans become trendy?

As someone who as recently succumbed to fashion trends and bought himself a cardie, it made me think how conscious I am of fashion trends. If I was to think about it seriously, two or three years ago how likely would it have been that I would even have considered the idea of wearing a cardigan as being vaguely fashionable, yet now I am a cardie owner and a proud one at that.
Will this trend last, I doubt it, but at least in a few years from now I'll be of an age that I'll be expected to be 'card-ied' up and like a good boy scout, I'll be (no not buggered up the arse) prepared.

Let These Tiny Striped Beasts Into Your Life

The Miniature Tigers

I came across these guys a couple of days ago after reading about some of the bands being they were featured in Spins bands to watch at this years CMJ Music in New York.
Hailing from Phoneix, Arizona, the Tigers sound like a combination of the Spinto Band, Weezer, the Beach Boys and rolls them up to in a big warm blanket of joy. They genuinely make these miserable rainy days that little bit more bearable.

Review of the Treasure Island Music Festival, San Francisco (21/09/08)

In recent years I have become more open to the idea of going to festivals abroad, the guarantee of sunshine, no mud and ten person deep queues to buy a £4 flat pint of lager has for some strange reason made me think that festival-ing outwith the UK might well be the way forward. So when I noticed that there was a festival on whilst I was on my honeymoon (I have a very understanding wife), I really couldn't knock the opportunity back.

Set on a made made Island in the San Franciscan Bay, I can hand on heart say that this was the most visually stunning setting festival that I have been to (fair enough Connect has its beautiful views of Argyll, but it never stops raining long enough for you to see anything!).
The glorious sunshine that we had all day just added to the very laid back atmosphere, the thing I found hard to comprehend, is just how respectable everyone was. There was nobody stoating about 'psihed oot there heid' at 1pm, actually come to think of it there was nobody who even vaguely looked liked they had more than one whole pint of beer! Litter-wise, punters held onto their empty cups, no pissing into empty glasses and launching them, in fact they were taking them to their respective recycling points. All very sociable, and I must admit that I did feel a touch jealous at how civilised it all ways, although by the end of the evening I did start to find the good behaviour a bit sickening, but fair play to the San Franciscan, they don't need to drink to enjoy themselves. Perhaps we could learn a lesson from them, as this would require as to have non-stop sunshine for most of the year and not to drink at any given opportunity, it ain't gonna happen.

Or the Whale on the 2nd stage

Having swotted up on the majority of bands playing at TI, Or the Whale were the only band I hadn't actually heard anything by. This local seven piece band were actually a real joy to watch, playing upbeat indie-pop songs, that made me glad that we'd got down there early. Their debut album 'Light Poles and Pines' is an album that I plan to get hold of in the next few months.

Port O'Brien

I have to admit that was slightly disappointed with Port O'Brien, 'All We Could Do Was Sing' is one of my favourite albums of this year, so I had made sure that we got there early to catch them. The crowd didn't seem to be that interested and they didn't play for long enough in my opinion.

John Vanderslice

I had heard a few JV tunes before TI, he seems to be a kind of cult figure within the San Francisco music scene. His songs were pleasant enough, but there wasn't too much that got me excited, although one his new songs did get my hips swaying.

Bon Iver live EP

Having released one of the finest debut albums of the year, Bon Iver has very kindly put a few live versions of some of his tunes up for download here. These versions are far more stripped back than the album versions, but I think that adds to the beauty of the songs.

1. For Emma, Forever Ago
2. Flume

3. Blindsided

Frightened Rabbit to release live album

'Liver! Lung! FR!' is Frightened Rabbit at their very best - live. This intimate, mostly-acoustic live rendition of their phenomenal album 'Midnight Organ Fight' was recorded in July 2008 in Glasgow and mixed by Mice Parade’s Adam Pierce.

Among other surprises, special guests pop up here and there: James Graham from The Twilight Sad contributes vocals to an incredible version of “Keep Yourself Warm,” while Glasgow scene staple Ross Clark adds rollicking mandolin to “Old Old Fashioned.”

The stripped-down instrumentation brings singer Scott Hutchison’s vocal delivery - now wrenching, now soaring - to the fore, showcasing the emotive lyrics and memorable melodies that have earned the band their passionate following.
